'10 OH OL Skyler Schofner (Michigan State signee)

BigJim;1579629; said:
These situations are funny to me. I like to hear that the coaches have been keeping in touch because I think Schofner would be a good player to get. But at the same time, lack of talk from the OSU coaches might mean they're liking their chances with Henderson, James, etc.

I'm in the "we need more OL" camp though so I'd rather see Schofner with an offer already if he's next on the board and then have the "problem" of possibly ending up with one more OL than the coaches think is ideal. I guess the exception would be if the coaches think having another linemen committed may sway James' (or others) decision. Just thinking out loud...

With so many blue-chip recruits yet to make up their minds and the class being already tight.....may number around 20....that may cause the coaches to be a little hesitant. So far we have 13 commits....so it really comes down to figuring out the final decisions of the guys ahead of him such as Seantrel Henderson, Brandon Linder and Matt James before offering Schofner.

You basically just took what I said, regurgitated the main obvious part that everyone knows and left out my reflections on what I thought about it.

Spartans focused on final spots
BY MATT DORSEY

With 14 verbal commitments for the class of 2010, Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio has the majority of scholarships slots filled. But there are still a few scholarship spots left and the coaching staff is eyeing a few key players for them.

An All-Ohio OL Class?
Michigan State already has two offensive line commitments for the class of 2010, but the staff would like to add a third before signing day in February. The top prospect on the board at offensive line may be Sunbury (Ohio) Big Walnut Skyler Schofner. The 6-foot-7, 290-pound Schofner is the No. 39 offensive tackle prospect in the nation, according to Rivals.com and has over 20 scholarship offers, including from MSU, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Boston College and Kentucky.

Schofner will be in East Lansing next weekend when the Spartans take on Penn State. It is an unofficial visit, but Schofner told SpatanMag.com that MSU is high on his list and he hopes to make a decision in the coming weeks.

If Schofner does become a Spartan, he will join fellow Ohioan offensive line recruits Travis Jackson (Columbus St. Francis DeSales) and Michael Dennis (Carey). Both Jackson and Dennis picked Michigan State over a host of offers from other Big Ten teams.

Spartans prepare for visitors
By MATT DORSEY

...
Big Walnut (Ohio) offensive lineman Skyler Schofner is also expected to be checking out the big game against Penn State. This will be Schofner's second trip to Michigan State and an official visit will likely follow in the next month. The Spartans are expected to sign only three offensive linemen for the class, so the 6-foot-6, 285-pound prospect could be the last piece of the puzzle. Schofner holds more than 20 scholarship offers in all, including ones from schools like Wisconsin, Purdue, Michigan, Illinois and Indiana.

Scout $ - Schofner Gaining Confidence

By Allen Trieu
Posted Jan 1, 2010

Schofner has had a stomach flu this week which has caused him to miss some PT for the Offense-Defense All Star game... The rigors of participating in his 2nd All Star game may be catching up but he's enjoying every minute of it. Says he's 100% committed to MSU "right now".

Scout $ - O-D Breakdown: East

Despite missing practices with a stomach flu, Schofner still did quite well both in practices & the game... All of the scouts were impressed with his mobility for his size... One on looker went so far as to say that's how OL are "supposed" to look...

Rivals (free)

Final Cut: Rivals 250 has 15 new names

...
OT Skyler Schofner, 6-7/276, Sunbury (Ohio) Big Walnut
RANK: No. 172
SCHOOLS: Committed to Michigan State
WHY HE'S IN THE 250: Schofner was the top offensive lineman all week in Hawaii. He has very good size and strength, and is fairly athletic. He looks like a college lineman now and will not back down to anyone once he steps on campus. He is a fierce competitor that wants to be the best. - G.L.

Wow, I'm pretty shocked by this jump in rankings by Skyler.

Skyler is a gigantic man with great measurables and outstanding athleticism, but I was never very impressed with him as a football player. Skyler, IMO, is just a combine warrior. As some of you know, I play for Delaware Hayes and we beat Big Walnut earlier this year. Skyler was barely able to block a good friend of mine, a DE who's about 6 foot, 200lbs. He had 2 sacks and a few more TFL's in that game. Maybe Skyler just had trouble with a smaller-built guy, one who he likely won't face again at MSU.

Skyler is a better player than I am and I only hope to have as much potential as Skyler does. Maybe he will eventually come into his own and dominate the Big 10. Who knows, but I wish Skyler the best of luck up north (He's gonna need it to handle the smell from that school nearby).

Spartans set for key weekend

...
Another committed player that will be on campus is Big Walnut (Ohio) offensive tackle Skyler Schofner. The 6-foot-7, 295-pound Schofner was recently elevated to a four-star recruit by Rivals.com and is now rated one of the top 250 prospects in the nation. Schofner has had impressive performances in several postseason All-American games.
