'10 OH PF Adreian Payne (Michigan State Verbal, R.I.P.)

Those that I talk to close with Payne don't believe so... AP's closest media friend works for the tOSU Rivals site, and he tells me no-go on tOSU... Guess we'll see... Anything's possible with AP I guess, but I'll believe it when I see it/hear it from someone I KNOW has connections to AP... Too many people at each school that "think" they know what's going on here...

COLUMN: Adreian Payne says ?No? to Juwan Staten
By Tom Archdeacon | Wednesday, June 24, 2009

Kentucky sent him a fancy notice made to look like it was from ESPN announcing he?d just committed to the Wildcats.

Tennessee, Adreian Payne said, has sent him ?stacks and stacks of stuff.?

Ohio State just added assistant coach Jeff Boals, who has a close relationship with him and now is trying to lure the 6-foot-10 Jefferson High senior to Columbus next year.

And then there?s the University of Dayton, which, among other things, has Juwan Staten, the UD-bound guard, doing its bidding.

?We?ll both be out with our buddies and I never know quite when it?s gonna happen, but I do know it IS going to happen,? Payne laughed. ?Pretty soon Wan will go, ?C?mon, go with me (to UD).?

When it comes to Payne, Staten is like a travelling salesman because he?s also pitching Oak Hill Academy, the national prep school in Virginia he?s transferred to out of Thurgood Marshall High.

?Oak Hill says they don?t recruit, but they do,? Payne said. ?They have Wan calling me a lot trying to get me to go with him. I looked into it, but I don?t see the point for me.?

This is what?s its like to be one of the best uncommitted players in the nation.

Payne told people at the NBA Top 100 camp that he took part in last week in Virginia, that he?s already received a dozen scholarship offers. In its prep prospect rankings, rivals.com rates him the eighth best player in the class of 2010. Staten is No 59.

Payne was at Daequan Cook?s basketball camp Tuesday, June 23, when the Portland Trail Blazers 7-foot center Greg Oden ? Cook?s pal and former OSU teammate ? walked in.

Soon Payne and Oden were talking. ?You playing out here today?? Oden asked.

Payne shook his head and camp director Albert Powell explained: ?I won?t let him. I don?t want to risk anything. He has too much at stake.?

Over the next two weeks Payne travels to Phoenix to take part in the camp run Suns? big man A?mare Stoudemire and then San Diego for LeBron James? camp. The rest of the summer he?ll travel the country with his All Ohio Red AAU team, which includes Staten and the OSU bound pair, Jared Sullinger and Jordan Sibert.

After Oden met with Payne, he recalled another Dayton-bred talent he met for the first time. He was playing for an Indiana AAU team coached by Mike Conley Sr., who brought the players to Dayton?s McFarland Junior High for some workouts.

?We already had Aaron Pogue on the team and then they brought this other kid in for a tryout who was supposed to be pretty good,? Oden smiled. ?I figured he was just some street ball player.?

Cook remembered that meeting, too. ?I walked in for my tryout and the first guy I saw was Greg. It?s pretty rare to see a 7-footer when you?re as young as we were, but it didn?t bother me.?

Oden laughed: ?As soon as we started playing, he just killed everybody. Right then I knew Dayton has some pretty good talent.?

Adreian Payne is now proving nothing has changed.

A rare undecided: Arguably one of the most coveted players in the country, who is still undecided, is 6-9, 215-pound Adriean Payne from suburban Dayton, Ohio. He's a consensus top 15 recruit in the country with the skills to play any position along the baseline.

His list of suitors include West Virginia, Kentucky, Louisville, Ohio State, Cincinnati, Tennessee, Kansas, Xavier and Dayton. After helping his team advance to the title game of the King City Classic, Payne confirmed he is still an open book in the recruiting world.

"I'm keeping everything open," he said. "But I'm going to commit before my high school season starts."

If that's the plan, then his calendar should be pretty full between now and Thanksgiving. Payne said he has yet to take one of his six NCAA allowable official visits, and indeed had not even cut his final list down to six.

"I'm just going to take my time," Payne said.

In the recruiting world, his time is dwindling by the day

UD target Payne starts strong at LeBron Classic
By Doug Harris, Staff Writer

DAYTON — UD recruiting target Adreian Payne has dropped 12 spots to No. 20 in the most recent Rivals.com top-100 list, but he’s helping himself with a strong showing at the LeBron James’ King City Classic this week in northeast Ohio.

Jerry Meyer, a recruiting analyst for Rivals, gave the 6-foot-10 center from Jefferson High School a glowing review on the Web site Thursday:

“Adreian Payne put together one of the best performances we have seen him have in his opening game of the event where he got the best of Rakeem Christmas (of Philadelphia). Payne did most everything you would want out of a big man from blocking shots, rebounding in traffic, scoring in the post and hitting open jumpers.

“If Payne demonstrates the potential to sustain this type of effort, he will slide up the rankings from his present No. 20 spot.”

Jefferson High School?s Adreian Payne, considered one of the top recruits in the nation, has decided he wants to play college basketball out of state and has eliminated Dayton from consideration, according to his coach.

Art Winston said he and Payne huddled last Saturday and the player pared his list to five schools: Kansas, Kentucky, Arizona, Michigan State and West Virginia.

Payne is playing in an AAU tournament in Orlando and didn?t return a message left on his cell phone.

?I think he likes the coaches and likes the players (at UD), but it?s just a matter of him wanting to get away and play,? Winston said.

The 6-foot-10 senior center, who averaged 15 points and 12 rebounds for Jefferson last season, is ranked as the 15th-best prospect nationally by Scout.com and the 20th-best by Rivals.com.

?You never know. He?s a teenager. It?s these five this week. In another week, it could be a (different) five,? Winston said. ?Right now, he?s in Orlando playing in an AAU tournament. When he comes back, it might be different.?

Asked if he supported Payne leaving Ohio to play, Winston said: ?It?s not my decision. I have no comment about what I think. It?s what he can handle. This young man is more mature than a lot of people give him credit for.?

Report: Payne Knocks Out Buckeyes
Posted by Jeff Rapp on Jul 25, 2009 at 12:00 am

It appears that Dayton Jefferson senior-to-be Adreian Payne has finally found a moment of clarity with his recruiting and in the process has eliminated Ohio State from contention.

A highly coveted 6-10 center with shot-blocking ability, impressive athleticism and developing offensive skill, Payne could have added richly to an Ohio State 2010 class that already is considered the top haul in the country.

Instead the top-20 prospect told his hometown paper, the Dayton Daily News, that he plans to go to a school from out of state, thereby wiping Ohio State, Dayton, Xavier and Cincinnati off the board.

In a story released online late Friday evening, Payne told DDN that he was now considering just five schools: Kansas, Kentucky, Arizona, Michigan State and West Virginia.

"I know a lot of people in Dayton, and I want to be focused on school without a lot of distractions," Payne said by phone from Orlando between games in an AAU tournament.

"I like the (UD) players a lot. Chris (Wright) is my cousin and everything. It was a tough decision. ... I don't know where I want to go, but I just feel it was too close."

Payne added, "I'm pretty solid with my decision."

If I were handicapping those would be the two favorites... Visiting WVU this weekend...

Feels like he wants to play big-time now, and doesn't see a great fit with tOSU...
AP is bit of an enigma to me, I never really understood what he was looking for in a school.

22, What was his overall issue with not staying in-state? And was it the offense that made him think twice about tOSU?

AP does what his Coach and "helpers" tell him to do...

The issue with tOSU was more Sullinger than tOSU... He just didn't want to continue to play with him. All-Ohio Red is a good team, but they're not really that tight off the court... Several of the members really don't care for others that much personally...
