'10 OH RB Erick Howard (Ohio U Walk-On)

You obviously missed my point.....

It's not that he is at OU, it is that he is WALKING ON!

Also, my second point was not neglecting talent at OU. It was more so stating the obvious, if he was THAT talented, he'd be at OSU, his first choice.....

Please don't try to twist my words.

His lack of scholarship has pretty much nothing to do with his football abilities.

He'd be on Scollie at least at Akron (And likely somewhere better-- not trying to knock the Zips) if other things were in order.

Police have received warrants to arrest three suspects, including a former high school Mr. Football player, in connection with a home invasion robbery last month.

Warrants were issued Wednesday afternoon for the three men police say were responsible:

Erick M. Howard, Seth R. Obermiller and Michael A. Taylor.

Howard, 20, is a former Hoover High standout running back and linebacker who twice won the state’s top player award, Mr. Football.

His address was listed in court records as 5155 Portage St. NW. Police said Wednesday they were unsure about his whereabouts.

Howard and Obermiller, 19, of 2321 Comet Circle NW in Lake Township, are charged with aggravated burglary, rape and theft.

The pair went into an apartment on Sunford Avenue SE with a handgun, bound a couple inside with duct tape and robbed them, according to the police complaint filed in Canton Municipal Court.

The young couple — a 23-year-old man and his 20-year-old girlfriend — told police they awoke to find two men in ski masks pointing handguns at their heads. The incident happened around 3:15 a.m. Aug. 20.

The woman was sexually assaulted during the altercation, police said.

The aggravated burglary and rape charges are first-degree felonies that can each bring up to 10 years in prison with a conviction.

No doubt, if guilty, this was reprehensible and indefensible, but let's not pretend that all kids have an easy path in life just because they have some athletic ability.

Certainly, we'd all like to see Howard succeeding between the lines and in the classroom; but just because we'd like to see a kid succeed doesn't mean he or she will be able to leave behind a difficult upbringing. I realize ultimately it falls on the kid to make the right decisions, but I think we often assume it's much easier to overcome tough odds than it may truly be.

Again, if guilty, this shit is beyond inexcusable, but I find it hard, coming from a middle class background, to fully comprehend a 21-year-old's past and state of mind.

NORTH CANTON ?

Police are hoping that Erick Howard, a suspect in an Aug. 20 home invasion, will turn himself in within a few days.

Aggravated burglary, rape and theft charges have been filed against Howard ? Ohio?s Mr. Football in 2008 and 2009 ? and a second man, Seth R. Obermiller. A third man, Michael A. Taylor, is charged with complicity to aggravated burglary and theft.

The charges were filed Wednesday. Taylor, 20, turned himself in that afternoon. Obermiller, 19, surrendered to police Thursday morning. But Howard, 20, remains at large.

Police tend to believe that Howard, who had a Jackson Township address, has left the area, and possibly the state.

?He?s been given ample time to turn himself in,? Police Chief Stephan B. Wilder said Friday afternoon.

The longer it takes Howard to surrender, the greater the possibility that police will seek assistance from the FBI or the U.S. Marshal?s office to help apprehend him.

?We?re at the point where we might have to take the next step,? Wilder said.

Todd Porter: Erick Howard dropped the ball in his decision-making

NORTH CANTON ?

No one ever said Erick Howard, the former Hoover High School running back and Ohio?s two-time Mr. Football, had it all.

But he did have, at least, one thing.

He had a chance to make something of his future.

His future isn?t very bright. Not now. Not after last week?s news.

North Canton police believe Howard is one of three people involved in a home invasion robbery. Just after 3 a.m. on Aug. 20, Howard and Seth Obermiller allegedly broke into an apartment wearing ski masks, pointing guns at a man and woman inside. According to police, the victims were duct-taped, robbed, and the 20-year-old woman was raped.

Howard remains the only one still at large, six days after charges were filed.

Howard was given a chance in high school. Hoover football coach Don Hertler Jr. agreed to allow Howard to live with him during Howard?s junior year. Howard?s mother had to move temporarily to the Seattle area.

Howard won Mr. Football his junior season. His grades improved while living with Hertler.

Howard?s mother moved back to North Canton his senior year.

Some have criticized Hertler. Maybe their criticism wouldn?t be quite as harsh if they knew Howard wasn?t the first student to seek refuge at Hertler?s home. Maybe their opinion would change if they knew Hertler has taken in a former Hoover student now because he doesn?t have a place to stay.

?My heart goes out to all the people involved,? Hertler said. ?Erick, along with most of my players, are like sons to me. I will always support my former players behind the scenes unconditionally, and I hope things work out for the best.

?I try to help all my players. Some get publicized a little more.?
