The Tidewater tradition continues with Phillip Sims.

The Under Armour All-American quarterback for Oscar Smith High in Chesapeake, Va., is just the latest talented signal caller to come out of the coastal area of the commonwealth, following in the footsteps of players like Michael Vick, Ronald Curry, Aaron Brooks, Bryan Randall and more recently Tyrod Taylor and E.J. Manuel.

"There is something about this area," Sims said. "We know how to play the quarterback position. I think it's a tribute to the coaches around here in that they know how to coach the position."

Sims won't be the first Tidewater quarterback to play in the game as Manuel, who is now at Florida State, played in the inaugural one.

"It's a good situation for me," he said. "Great quarterbacks from this area may not always be highly-ranked, but they will come out and play hard on a national stage against top competition."

The coach who has guided Sims to 7,776 yards passing, 84 touchdowns and a Group AAA, Division 6 state championships in nearly three complete seasons of football is Richard Morgan, who also serves as his team's offensive coordinator. Morgan employs an extremely diverse and multiple offensive scheme and handed the keys to Sims four games into the 2006 season, when the 6-foot-1, 209-pounder was a freshman.

"The first play I called was a 40-yard pass," Morgan said. "I wanted to make sure that the other team didn't catch on that I was putting a freshman in there. Of course, the pass was incomplete, but I wanted to make a statement that he was there to play."

Sims went on to finish the season with 1,529 passing yards and 16 touchdowns and followed that with a sophomore campaign in which he threw for more than 3,041 yards and 30 touchdowns. Last season, Sims threw for 3,195 yards and 38 touchdowns, placing him 1,388 yards away from becoming the all-time leader in the state of Virginia for passing yardage. He's also 29 touchdown passes away from being the record holder in that department as well.

"He's the best quarterback that I've seen since I've been here," Morgan said. "I am not one of these coaches that tries to pump up his own kids. I am just being honest. I wasn't around to see Michael Vick, Ronald Curry or Aaron Brooks, but (Sims) is the best I've seen since I have been here."

I was at the Oakton - Oscar Smith game. My son plays for Oakton. I'm not sure how they got almost 10 minutes of highlights from a 10-7 game. Chris Coyer broke his neck on the play early in the game. It was not a stinger.

On to the Oscar Smith QB. His touch must have been way off that day. Oscar Smith threw the deep ball (40+ yards) at least a dozen times in the game and only connected on two. The rest were overthrows.

It appeared to me that Oscar Smith was an impatient team as the Oakton game was their only close game of the year. The next closest score was 36-14. If Oscar Smith had used an intermediate passing game with crossing routes and slants they'd have won much more handily. Instead they went for the home run ball time and time again with little success.

When pressured Sims looked to pass first but when he did break and run he was successful. Overall I was extremely impressed at his abilities as a high school junior.

I do believe it is something about these kids that is special. It seems that in about a 5 year period they end up having a special kid that comes along. If Montana decides not to become a Buckeye, I would love to see this kid get an offer.

This kid is a special Dual threat QB, and it seems like the 757 area(his area in eastern VA) always pops out players like this(from Mike Vick to Aaron Brooks and Tyrod Taylor). Its just so hard to get these players from the south, most notably from the grasps VA Tech or even the ACC for that matter. I wonder if anyone knows our track record with kids from VA. And not the kids from NoVA(that's northern VA) they don't have near the talent as the Hampton Roads/757 area.

QB Phillip Sims plans to transfer from Alabama

Former Oscar Smith quarterback Phillips Sims plans to leave Alabama and transfer to another school, according to a release from the school Friday.

"This was a very difficult decision because I've had a great experience at the University of Alabama and I'm thankful for the opportunity this program provided me," Sims said in the news release. "I want to thank Coach Saban and the coaching staff for being with me and my family at this time. I wouldn't change anything about my decision to come to Alabama and this has been one of the greatest experiences of my life. The reason for me leaving is nothing more than a personal matter. I just need to be closer to home to support my family at this time and that needs to be my priority right now. I would still like to continue my football career, and hopefully I can do that and also be there for my family."

Sims was arguably one of the greatest high school quarterbacks in Virginia High School League history. He threw for 10,725 passing yards and 119 touchdowns, which were tops in VHSL history. He also had 636 completions, which ranked second. He posted a 48-4 record in his four-year career that included a Group AAA Division 6 state title, three Eastern Region titles and four Southeastern District titles.

Contd....

He has too much eligibility left to go to Wisconsin, right?

He would have to complete a degree at Alabama in order to transfer to another D1A/FBS school without sitting out 1 year. Since he's been there only 2 years, that's very unlikely.

He's going to sit a year anyway, might as well sit while O'Brien plays and then come in and start.

Since he said, "I just need to be closer to home to support my family at this time and that needs to be my priority right now", I'm guessing Wisconsin is not in his future...
