Commits to Texas

azcentral.com blogs - Richard Obert - Richardobert - Hamilton OL Christian Westerman commits to Texas

Chandler Hamilton junior offensive tackle Christian Westerman, one of the nation's top football recruits, gave Texasan oral commitment today.
Westerman, the state's No.1 recruit for the Class of 2011, was considering waiting until after his senior season to choose a college. But he said Tuesday he wanted to get it over with.
"We were thinking of narrowing it down," Westerman said. "I was sick of all of it. I knew Texas was there."
Westerman, 6-foot-5, 290 pounds, a five-star recruit by both Rivals.com and Scout.com, said he attended Southern California's spring game Saturday and left unimpressed.
"I didn't get too good a feel," he said.

Westerman, who had more than 30 scholarship offers, took a Junior Day to Texas and attended a camp at Texas last summer.
"They treat you like family there," he said of the Longhorns. "They are open. It was a way better feel than all of the other schools."

Good for Christian and for Texas. We seem set at OL this year, although he certainly is a premium talent that any program would welcome.

Interesting to here how a top talent from a stable family environment felt about the vibe at USC during their spring game. Its only one example, and not an indictment for sure, but I wonder how the cut throat nature of Kiffin and Orgeron will work on the strong family values kids and their parents. This will be an interesting theme to follow.

When Nebraska actually starts beating Texas (1-8 in last eight games against UT since 1996), then you can start talking smack.

Was there a double-header in there somewhere?

It's called the "new math".

Christian Westerman opens it up - ESPN

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- The nation's top offensive lineman isn't decommitting from Texas. But he is looking around.

Chandler (Ariz.) Hamilton five-star OT Christian Westerman is still committed to the Longhorns, but questions about the future coaching staff have the 6-foot-5, 290-pounder making visits elsewhere.

On tap is USC for a Jan. 14 official visit. Texas edged the Trojans in gaining the verbal commitment of Westerman, but now it appears the battle is back on.

"My situation with Texas is that I don't know who my offensive line coach is going to be right now," Westerman said. "That is the person that you're going to spend most of your time with in college and it needs to be a strong relationship. I feel like I have the right to check some things out until they fill that coaching position."

Continued...

"Right now it's Texas, USC and Auburn," Westerman said. "I'm going to work on two other visits to schools I'm interested in."

Westerman cancelled his visit to USC and it sounds like it's down to Auburn and Texas with ASU begging for an official visit to try and get in the mix.

Westerman has already visited Auburn and visits Texas this week. If Westerman doesn't make a final decision after his Texas visit, his dad says they might schedule an official visit to ASU the weekend before signing day.

http://www.azcentral.com/sports/asu...esterman-transferring-from-auburn-to-asu.html

Former Chandler Hamilton All-American offensive tackle Christian Westerman got his release from Auburn, is home for the holidays and will enroll at Arizona State for the spring semester, Hamilton coach Steve Belles confirmed Thursday morning.
It was reported by AuburnSports.com Wednesday night that Westerman was transferring to ASU, which recruited him hard during the Dennis Erickson regime.

Belles has been communicating with Westerman?s dad, Chris, during this process. ASU couldn?t talk to Westerman until he received his release, which was two days ago.

Westerman, a 6-foot-4, 298-pound tackle, has spent the last two seasons at Auburn. Slowed with an ankle injury, he played in two games this season. The Tigers suffered through a disappointing season, finishing 3-9 and 0-8 in the Southeastern Conference. The effort cost coach Gene Chizik his job, a decision made last month.

Auburn reportedly has been investigated by the NCAA over possible improprieties involving recruits.

If Auburn is placed on probation, Westerman may be able to play immediately for ASU. If not, he will have to sit out a year per NCAA rules. Coming out of Chandler Hamilton, Westerman initially committed to Texas, but changed his mind and landed at Auburn. At the time, ESPN.com rated him as the No. 2 tackle and the nation's No. 6 overall prospect. He redshirted in 2011. CONT...
