Varsity Letters: Defense paves way for Calvert Hall's win

Maybe the biggest factor in No. 4 Calvert Hall's 26-21 upset win over top-ranked Gilman on Friday night was the play of its defense. After giving up 271 yards in the first half, and letting both Greyhounds quarterback Darius Jennings and speedy back Cyrus Jones run wild, the Cardinals switched up their scheme at halftime, with remarkable results.

Gilman managed just 42 yards of offense in the second half. Jennings, who had rushed for 168 yards in the first half, had just 32 the rest of the way.

Free Rivals - Mid-Atlantic Whispers: Plenty of QBs available

Meanwhile, Baltimore (Md.) Gilman athlete Darius Jennings has been quiet about the recruiting process, but sources say that Maryland and Virginia, followed by Penn State, could have the edge over Virginia Tech, Boston College and some others recruiting him. The Terps look especially strong with a good start to the season and a surefire bowl bid as long as they don't implode. One of the drawbacks to Maryland heading into the season was the uncertain status of Ralph Friedgen and his staff. However, those questions have seemingly been answered.

Varsity Letters: Gilman's Jennings to play in Under Armour All-America game

November 2, 2010

Gilman quarterback Darius Jennings will be the only Baltimore athlete to play in the 2011 Under Armour All-America Game.

The highly recruited senior is one of just two Maryland players to be named an Under Armour All American and be invited to play in the game on Jan. 5 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. DeMatha lineman Cyrus Kouandijo was also invited. The game will be telecast live on ESPN at 7 p.m.

Jennings, an All-Metro first-team selection last season, has amassed 1,733 yards of offense this season. He has rushed 148 times for 1,395 yards and 17 touchdowns and is 20-for-40 passing for 305 yards and one touchdown.

In addition, he has returned five kickoffs for 220 yards and two touchdowns. As a cornerback, he has 20 tackles, seven pass break-ups and one forced fumble.

Jennings said he would make his college choice after the No. 3 Greyhounds' season ends -- and it ends Saturday when they host the 95th meeting with No. 9 McDonogh at 2:30 p.m. He is still considering offers from Maryland, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Ohio State, Boston College, Connecticut, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and UCLA.

Darius Jennings Down to Six
November 4th, 2010 by Chris Horne

Four ACC schools, one Big Ten school and one Pac 10 school have reportedly made the final six for one of the country?s top athletes.

Gilman (Baltimore, MD) superstar Darius Jennings has narrowed his list to six schools, the Baltimore Sun reports. According to the report, Maryland, Ohio State, UCLA, Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest are the finalists for the 5-11, 175-pound senior.

Jennings has taken one unofficial visit to Virginia Tech, but the experience went well. He discussed the trip in an August 3 article on TechSideline.com.

?I got to talk to Coach Beamer and Coach Sherman, who has been keeping me updated with Virginia Tech. He would also be my position coach. Coach Beamer and Coach Sherman stressed how much they want me and that I would be an asset to the team,? he said.

?The visit went really well. Seeing it for myself put it in a different perspective. I really do like the school and want to learn more about it. I?m interested.?

A truly dynamic prospect, Jennings could play a number of positions ? RB, WR, DB, PR, KR ? on the next level. As Gilman?s starting quarterback, he has rushed for 1,395 yards and passed for another 305 yards this season. He has 20 total touchdowns including 17 rushing, two on kick-off returns and one passing. As a junior, he totaled 2,761 yards including over 2,000 on the ground.

Jennings has helped the Greyhounds to a 6-2 record that includes convincing wins over WCAC powers DeMatha Catholic and Good Counsel. Gilman will meet McDonogh in Saturday?s season finale.

Gilman's Jennings: College decision may take until January

After scoring four touchdowns to lead Gilman to a 42-6 win over archrival McDonogh Saturday, Darius Jennings may not make his next big move until January.

Now that the high school season has ended for the Greyhounds, Jennings' priority will be to choose one school from among his top six colleges: Maryland, Ohio State, UCLA, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest.

Jennings said in August that he would put the decision aside to concentrate on his senior season as the Greyhounds' All-Metro quarterback. He now plans to take his official visits, including one to UCLA, the only school on his list that he has not visited.

"I'll be out there in December or January. I don't know yet," Jennings said Saturday. "Now that the season is over, I can focus more on making officials and everything. I'm taking all five official visits."

After receiving 30 initial offers, Jennings settled on a top ten, but he dropped Penn State, Pittsburgh, Boston College and Connecticut to bring his list down to six.

"It was really tough to get down to six," Jennings said. "The six that I chose, I guess I had more of a comfort level with the coaching staff and the guys who were recruiting me."

Jennings named Gatorade Maryland Football Player of the Year

Gilman senior Darius Jennings was named the Gatorade Maryland Football Player of the Year Thursday.

Jennings, an All-Metro first-team selection last season as an athlete, was the No. 2 Greyhounds' quarterback, rushing for 1,592 yards on 165 carries. He also was 29-for-50 passing for 425 yards and three touchdowns ? two of them in the season-ending 42-6 win over archrival McDonogh. He also returned five kickoffs for 220 yards and two touchdowns.

The 6-foot, 185-pound Jennings is the Greyhounds' all-time leading rusher with 4,338 yards on 493 carries with 53 touchdowns. He was named an Under Armour All-American and will play in the Under Armour All-American game Jan. 5 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Jennings is undecided on college, but has narrowed his list to Ohio State, UCLA, Maryland, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest.

?I?m amazed at what Jennings is able to do,? DeMatha Coach Bill McGregor said in a news release. ?We?ve played him two years in a row and ?held? him to about 550 yards rushing. There?s nothing you can do to stop him, and we worked very hard to try and find a way.?

Heard he really likes those Virginia schools. Really hoping we get him here to see a bowl practice or something. Tour the facilities and get some good attention from the staff and players. Things are way more relaxed this time of year.
Oh, and yes, Darius Jennings is still my favorite recruit outside of Ohio in which we have a shot.

He's a nice player from what i've seen on film. I like the LB Grant of all the out of state players.
