Connor Brewer was the water boy during Scottsdale Chaparral?s 4A-I state title game last year.

On Friday, he gave the Firebirds a much sweeter drink: A big gulp of a state championship.

Brewer, the 6-foot-1, 175-pound sophomore quarterback, threw for one touchdown, ran for another and played well beyond his years in Chaparral?s 34-21 5A-I victory over Tempe Marcos de Niza at Sun Devil Stadium.

?What a transformation,? Brewer said. ?I couldn?t ask for anything more. Hopefully it?s one of many in my time here.?

That kind of talk may seem arrogant, but given Brewer?s talent and the fact that he still has two more years of high school ball left, it may well be prophetic.

Simply put, the kid is special. The mailman who delivers to the Brewer home in Scottsdale might want to add a few core exercises to his daily routine, because the mailbox will soon be stuffed with press guides and letters from college coaches across the country.

?He?s amazing,? senior tackle Andrew Gustafson said. ?I?ve never seen a young kid like him be so poised. He?s a leader. And the scary part is he?s only going to get better.?

Brewer?s numbers weren?t anything special Friday: He was 6-for-9 passing for 147 yards and he ran six times for 24 yards, but he arguably made the three biggest plays of the night.

Report: Connor Brewer being wooed by Alabama, Notre Dame

Connor Brewer got a full release from his Texas football scholarship and is now receiving interest from schools such as Alabama and Notre Dame (among others), according to a report on Wednesday from Arizona Central.

Word got out on Tuesday that the redshirt freshman quarterback was set to leave Austin. The crowded Texas depth chart at quarterback was fingered as the likely cause of his exit, but it didn't take long before attention focused on where he would transfer.

Brewer, rated the No. 4 pro-style quarterback in the class of 2012 by 247Sports, was offered by dozens of football programs from around the country coming out of high school, including the two closest to his home, Arizona and Arizona State.

So far, Stanford, Duke and Tennessee have joined Alabama and Notre Dame in contacting Brewer, but he's still a ways away from making his decision.

Brewer said he is wide open to the recruiting. He will also look at the same schools who recruited him while he was leading Chaparral to three consecutive state championships will be recruiting him again, although it is still early to say where he might be leaning.

"I don't have a place in mind," said Brewer, who spent his first year in Texas last season as a red-shirt. "Definitely (UA) could be a good place to go. It's still early, too soon to say where I'll end up."

Arizona could have an advantage for Brewer's services since his high school coach, Charlie Ragle, is an assistant for the Wildcats.
