'12 IN SG Gary Harris (Michigan State Verbal)

Q: Is anything new going on in the recruiting picture?

A: Really I?m just hearing from everyone. I talk to IU, Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Xavier, Notre Dame, Iowa, Butler, and lots of other schools.

Q: Are you planning any unofficial visits for the near future?

A: Yes, I?ll make some visits on the weekends when I?m not doing anything with football. I haven?t been out to Notre Dame, and they really want me to come up. Michigan really wants my whole family to come up for a visit. I?ve visited almost every school, but now I want my family to get to see them.

Q: Do you have any timetable for your decision?

A: Not really, after this evaluation period I just want to sit down with my parents and talk about it. We?ll talk about maybe narrowing down the list of schools, but we?re not exactly sure what we?re going to do.

Hamilton Southeastern?s Gary Harris: A two-sport star
by Zachary Osterman in Recruiting | August 11th, 2010

It?s not as crazy as it seems. Yes, Gary Harris is an elite basketball recruit, particularly after what has been a successful and massively impressive summer. But there?s value, he said, in finding his escape from the hectic universe of basketball recruiting ? it comes with pads and a helmet.

?(It?s) just another way for you to compete,? Harris said. ?It?s fun.?

Harris, one of the top 20 players in the 2012 class, already has an offer list pages long, with Michigan State, Indiana, Illinois, Butler, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Xavier bidding for his services.

And yet, in an age where multi-sport athletes are discouraged in favor of concentrating solely in one field, Harris will be finding his fall fun under the Friday night lights.

"We're still talking it out right now," Harris Sr. said. "We've been to a lot of places to make an initial assessment. Now you start taking a second look at some schools to get a better idea."

Although its not the only consideration, proximity to home will play a factor in Harris' decision. He will have a number of schools to choose from, including Butler, Cincinnati, Illinois, Indiana, Miami (Fla.), Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon State, Vanderbilt and Xavier.

"We'd like for him to stay reasonably close to home so we can see him play," Harris Sr. said. "I think Gary feels that way, too. But it's not the only factor. Some of the places on his list are more of a long shot than others, but we're always discussing where we're at with everything to the college coaches. At this point, we haven't told anybody that we're not going to consider them."

Harris Sr. said there's no a timetable for paring down the list or making a commitment. He said the family plans to visit Notre Dame again "soon" and are working to set up a few other visits.

I have to believe Hamilton Southeastern junior Gary Harris is going to end up playing basketball in college, but his performance on the football field this fall is getting him attention from a number of schools, including Indiana, Iowa and Wisconsin. Could he do both? He said he hasn't thought about it yet. It'd be a tough double to pull off and allow enough time for each sport.

Hamilton Southeastern junior Gary Harris is in football season, but that didn't stop basketball coaches from coming to see him as well as sophomore teammate Zak Irvin and junior Jacobby Bledsoe. Hamilton Southeastern coach Brian Satterfield said coaches from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Vanderbilt and Xavier had either been to the school or planned to be there.

Indiana ?very high? on Harris? list following weekend visit
by Zachary Osterman in Recruiting | October 3rd, 2010

Indiana fans can thank their sellout crowd for keeping Gary Harris from IU?s open gym on Saturday ? he was stuck in traffic.

Harris eventually made it down to Bloomington in time for the IU-Michigan game, and got to take in all the festivities with the current team and a bevy of talented fellow recruits. The day after his trip to Bloomington, Harris had plenty of good things to say.

?I had a great weekend,? Harris told Inside the Hall on Sunday night. He said the visit gave him a feel for ?what it?s like to be a part of Indiana basketball.?

Harris? candor on the weekend, and on where Indiana stands with him right now in general, were both positive. More than that, they were reflective of what has become a common sentiment among several of the top players ? particularly in-state ? that IU is recruiting.

?What they?re trying to do is just great,? Harris said, noting that Indiana?s latest recruiting victories in the ?12 and ?14 classes have not gone unnoticed. ?They?re building it up, so I mean, they?re going to have a team.?

One of Rivals? highest-ranked Indiana prospects in that 2012 class (Harris is the No. 5 shooting guard and No. 24 nationally) said IU is ? very high on my list,? right now, as well.

?Every time I go there,? he said, ?I like it even more.?

Hoosier Hysteria is not in the cards for Harris, however. Instead, Harris will head to Purdue country, but not for a visit. The 6-foot-4 guard is also a member of Hamilton Southeastern?s football team, currently 6-1, and the Royals play at McCutcheon on Oct. 15.

It?s also unclear if football will be a determining factor at all in Harris? final decision. He?s no slouch on the field, though even the player has said he expects his future to lie in basketball. But as to the idea of playing two sports in college, a la James Hardy or, dare I say it, Kipp Schutz, Harris spoke reservedly.

? I?ve thought about it, but it would be very hard,? he said.

Overall, Harris said he?s come away more and more impressed with Indiana?s program, both in its current form and in its efforts to recruit into an incredibly talented generation of Indiana basketball players.

?They?re building it up, so I mean, they?re going to have a team,? Harris said. ?(Crean)?s really making a statement now.?

Q&A with IU recruit Gary Harris
By Greg Rosenstein | IDS
Oct. 5, 2010

The men?s basketball program welcomed many of the state?s top recruits at Saturday?s football game.

IU men?s basketball beat reporter Greg Rosenstein caught up with shooting guard Gary Harris, Rivals.com?s No. 24 overall player in the class of 2012.

IDS How was your time in Bloomington?
HARRIS I had a great time with everyone on Saturday. Unfortunately IU couldn?t win, but it was still a fun game to watch.

IDS What does it mean that IU was able to bring in so much talent to Bloomington this
weekend?
HARRIS It just shows you that they are really starting to turn things around. They are trying to bring IU back to winning ways. (IU coach Tom) Crean is doing a great job of doing it. The program is moving in the right direction.

IDS When did you get to Bloomington, and what things did you do while there?
HARRIS We got there about 1:30 p.m. We started with a tailgate inside of Cook Hall. After we ate a little, we went down to the field at Memorial Stadium. After watching the game, I hung out with the players later on that night.

IDS Which players did you hang out with?
HARRIS I was with Victor Oladipo and Maurice Creek. I had a great time with those guys and really enjoyed myself.

IDS Have you been to other football games this year during visits? If so, how did the atmosphere on Saturday compare?
HARRIS The only other football game I?ve been to this year was the Michigan State vs. Notre Dame game. They were both great games that went all of the way down to the very end, so I enjoyed them.

IDS What is your relationship with coach Crean right now?
Harris We have a really good relationship. I talk to him a lot. Each time I go down there I like him even more and more.

IDS What is appealing about a school like IU?
HARRIS It?s a great school. Like I said, they are really turning things around. I can see myself fitting perfectly with this program, as I can with a lot of other schools. Coach Crean is also a great guy with a passion for the game.

IDS Have you set any form of time-table in terms of visits or making a decision for college?
HARRIS I?m in no rush right now in terms of making a decision. I?m just taking it slow.

Harris top underclassman in Indiana?

Hamilton (Ind.) Southeastern junior Gary Harris has become a star on the football field this fall. But he's still also highly-thought of on the basketball court.

And according to Rick Bolus' new High Potential Recruiting Service rankings, the 6-foot-4 Harris is the top underclassman among basketball prospects in the state of Indiana.

The dual-sport star is looking at Michigan State, Indiana, Michigan, Xavier, Ohio State, Louisville, Illinois and Cincinnati.

Bolus lists Indiana target Yogi Ferrell of Indianapolis Park Tudor as the No. 2 prospect in the state, followed by Indianapolis North Central D'Vauntes Smith-Rivers, Indianapolis Broad Ripple's Ron Patterson, Fort Wayne South's Raphael Davis and Indianapolis Lawrence Central's Jeremy Hollowell.

Patterson has already committed to Indiana University, while Davis has committed to Purdue. Smith-Rivera and Hollowell are both IU targets.

With the top six players in the junior class, Bolus lists the top sleeper in the state as Indianapolis Warren Central sophomore Devin Davis.
