GARY HARRIS

Superstar recruit Gary Harris enjoyed another Illini visit.

Harris is a 6'4" combo-guard at Hamilton Southeastern High School in suburban Indianapolis. He's built like a linebacker, which is not surprising. When he's not flying through the air, or granting genial interviews, Harris is a linebacker.

Pursued by a bevy of top-notch basketball programs, he's still wide-open about his college choice.

Indiana prep star visiting Louisville

Gary+Harrismug0510.jpg

The University of Louisville will have several recruiting targets in attendance at tonight's season opener against Butler in the new KFC Yum! Center.

And among those will be Fishers (Ind.) Hamilton Southeast junior Gary Harris.

The father of the 6-foot-4 Harris told The Courier-Journal on Monday night that his son would be headed back to Louisville for another unofficial visit. Harris was on campus two weekends ago.

"A lot of schools are showing interest," Gary Harris Sr. said. "Louisville has picked up the recruitment since the end of the summer."

The younger Harris is also considering Michigan State, Indiana, Xavier, Illinois, Ohio State and others.

Harris update

With his football season over, Hamilton Southeastern junior Gary Harris -- a five-star recruit, according to Scout.com -- has attended games at Purdue, Illinois and Louisville in the past week.

"The time frame kind of opened up before the (high school) season where we had some opportunities to get out and see some games," said his father, Gary Harris Sr. "Once basketball starts, we want to limit that some and let him focus on the season."

Harris Sr. said his son hasn't narrowed his list of more than a dozen scholarship offers but will probably do that after the season.

"We just want him to be 100 percent sure and not feel any pressure to make a premature decision," Harris Sr. said. "We're trying to be methodical with it."

HSE?s Gary Harris taking time to make visits
Nov. 21, 2010
Written by
Kyle Neddenriep

With Washington senior Cody Zeller off the board to Indiana, Hamilton Southeastern junior Gary Harris may have taken the mantle as the most-sought uncommitted prospect in the state. The 6-4 Harris is visiting Indiana today for a game against Evansville and has also visited Illinois, Purdue and Louisville in the last week-plus.

Harris, a five-star basketball recruit and also arguably the state?s top football prospect as wide receiver, is still getting himself back into basketball shape in the three weeks following the end of the football season.

?I?m ahead of where I was last year,? he said. ?I?m just working on keeping myself hydrated. I didn?t do that enough in football because we had so many breaks, but I?ve just got to work on conditioning. Basketball is just so much different, running non-stop.?

Harris said he?s taken several recent trips because once the high school season heats up, he?ll be more limited in where he goes.

?I?d never been to Louisville and Illinois and Purdue had been trying to get me back for a while,? Harris said. ?I finally got the chance to get up there.?

Harris? father, Gary Harris Sr., said it?s like that his son will have his top choices narrowed down to ?a reasonable number? by the end of the season. Although he has more than a dozen offers, the schools that have been recruiting him hard have been making regular appearances during the football season and open gyms before the season.

Geography will at least play some role in Harris? decision and most of the schools after him are within relatively easy driving distance from Indianapolis.

?We want him to be 100 percent sure and not feel any pressure to make a premature decision,? Harris Sr. said. ?We?re trying to be methodical with it.?

Harris not surprised at Indiana?s recruiting resurgence
by Alex Bozich in Recruiting | November 22nd, 2010

If Park Tudor point guard Yogi Ferrell declares for Indiana on Wednesday, as many are expecting, the pursuit of Hamilton Southeastern?s Gary Harris will instantly become the top recruiting storyline in Bloomington.

The five-star shooting guard, who just wrapped up his junior football season at wide receiver, made a quick trip on Sunday to watch the Hoosiers dispose of Evansville at Assembly Hall.

?I had a good time down there,? Harris told Inside the Hall on Monday evening. ?I got to see the game and they got the win, so that was good to see. I got to talk with Coach Crean a little bit.?

Harris? relationship with Crean has continued to blossom as the Indiana head coach has assumed the role of lead recruiter for the 6-4 guard.

?I do feel they?ve made me a priority,? he said. ?Most of my contact has come with Coach Crean. He?s done a great job recruiting me himself. And his recruiting style is up there with the best.?

That recruiting style Harris is speaking of is paying huge dividends in recent months for the Hoosiers.

Indiana has landed eight commitments since August 9 and Harris said he could see a turnaround coming.

?I?m not surprised at all,? he said of the run of commitments. ?I could see it coming. I knew Coach Crean was going to turn things around and it?s really starting to take effect. He?s really hit the state hard and done a great job recruiting the state. He?s getting a lot of talent from the state.?

Free Rivals - Eye-catchers: Flying to the Hoop

Gary Harris, SG, Hamilton Southeastern
Bossi's take
: To be fair, Harris struggled in his second game of the event when senior Wisconsin signee Traevon Jackson outplayed him. However, the 6-foot-4 junior was scintillating in his first game of the event. A solidly built off-guard, Harris got to the rim via the dribble-drive, slashed in transition and knocked down open jumpers when defenders left him. He's legitimately a year young for his class so he's loaded with upside. He is the center of a major recruiting battle among Michigan State, Indiana, Illinois, Notre Dame, Michigan and Louisville, among others.

Flyin' to the Hoop Classic recap - ESPN

SG Gary Harris (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern)
Harris is a strong and athletic wing. He body is more like an NFL strong safety than a high school shooting guard. He is an improving shooter with range to 20 feet. Harris had one of the best dunks of the season in his game versus Cincinnati Taft, and his strength and athletic ability make him a monster in transition.

A few of the athletes at the tournament could have the opportunity to choose between Division I basketball and FBS football. PF/C Taylor Decker (Vandalia,Ohio/Butler), PF Adolphus Washington (Cincinnati, Ohio/Taft) and Gary Harris are all excellent basketball players that are also being recruited to play at the highest level of college football. Decker is a top-flight offensive tackle said to be leaning towards Notre Dame (for football). Washington is a defensive stud that could play LB, DE or TE. Harris is a DB/WR prospect whose athletic ability is top-notch.

Crowd gives Harris a swollen head
Fans try to sway Hamilton Southeastern star's college decision
Feb 12, 2011

As the state's top-rated uncommitted high school junior, Hamilton Southeastern's Gary Harris sees or hears something new just about every night.

At Wednesday's 63-58 win at Carmel, a four-foot high cardboard cutout of Harris' face was displayed from the middle of the Royals' student section, surprising even Harris.

"A couple of kids at our school did that but I was surprised they brought it (to a road game)," he said. "It's kind of crazy."

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo attended Wednesday's game and watched Harris score 18 points, including an 8-for-8 performance from the free throw line. The Royals (15-2) are ranked No. 4 in Class 4A with three regular-season games remaining, including a home date against 4A No. 7 Pike on Tuesday.

A plus for Harris has been the production of teammates like 6-5 senior Randy Gregory, a Purdue football recruit who scored 23 points Wednesday. Junior guard Jacobby Bledsoe added 14 on four 3-pointers and sophomore Zak Irvin scored six and averages more than 10 a game.

"We've been in a good rhythm as a team and have good team chemistry," Harris said. "It was tough with the snow days being off for a while, but I think we're getting back to where we were. Our shots weren't really falling (against Carmel), but Randy came in and really picked us up on the inside."

The 23 points were a career-high for Gregory, who has earned the respect of teams who might have been inclined to leave him open and double-team Harris.

"I think teams know that they have to guard me a little bit, but I still catch them off guard," Gregory said. "I've been able to play a little bit bigger role offensively this year, and I think that's helped us out a lot."

Harris, averaging 18.1 points and 5.0 rebounds, has continued to take unofficial college visits during the season, most recently to Notre Dame.

"I've been taking visits here and there, but I'm really trying to concentrate on the rest of the season," Harris said. "We haven't really made a decision on when we're going to narrow things down and how many we're going to narrow it down to, though."

Carmel's student section made its preference known, chanting "IU, IU" at Harris when he touched the ball in the first half. He has more than a dozen scholarship offers.

Harris keeping quiet

Fishers, Ind., Hamilton Southeastern junior star Gary Harris is one of the most coveted prospects in the Class of 2012.

And he's a hard prospect to figure out.

Harris has a list of schools he's checking out, but he's not saying much about what he plans to do.

?I don't think the whole (recruiting) process wears on me, I just don't let it get to me,? Harris said. ?I just play my game and try to improve my skills.

?My parents shield me a lot from the recruiting, and that's a really big help. When I know the time is right, that's when I will make a decision.?

Harris said Indiana, Louisville, Illinois, Michigan State, Ohio State and Purdue are among the top schools he's considering. He said he's still open to any school that wants to get involved in his recruiting process.

?I just want to go to the school I feel most comfortable with,? Harris said. ?I want to go to a school where I know I am going to get better and where I have a good relationship with the players and the coaches.?

Harris said he has a relationship with Indiana coach Tom Crean and his staff and is ?just getting to know? Rick Pitino's new staff at U of L.

?I'm just trying to build a relationship,? Harris said. ?They're all still in the mix.?

Indiana commits ?working? on Gary Harris
Posted on June 8, 2011 by Jody Demling

Indiana University basketball coach Tom Crean already has five verbal commitments for the Class of 2012.

But the Hoosiers would like to add one more - Gary Harris.

The Fishers, Ind., Hamilton Southeastern guard is a top Indiana target. He has a long list of suitors.

But on Monday night, Harris played on the Indiana Junior All-Star team with IU commitments Yogi Ferrell, Ron Patterson and Jeremy Hollowell. He?ll play in another game against the Indiana All-Star team tonight and team with Patterson, Ferrell and IU commit Hanner Perea.

And you can bet Harris is getting an ear full from the future Hoosiers.

"We are working on him" Hollowell said with a smile. "We are also trying to give him his space a little, to let him work through the process. But we let him know."

Added Patterson: "We have to keep in his ear all the time. When we say thing, he?ll just be like, ?Man?."

Harris is also looking at Illinois, Louisville, Michigan State, Ohio State and Purdue among others.

Where are you going, Gary?
Like Cody Zeller last July, Hamilton Southeastern senior-to-be Gary Harris will be asked about 1,000 times this month about his college decision. Like Zeller, he?s unlikely to give much away. The 6-foot-4 Harris is expected to let July play out before doing anything and it?s probable that nothing will happen before the fall. Harris, also a standout wide receiver on the football field, will get the full-court press from the schools pursuing him closely. Michigan State has been involved since the very early stages, but Indiana, Purdue, Louisville and Notre Dame are schools commonly named as well. Will others get involved, such as Kentucky? The Wildcats have shown some interest.

Indiana standout Gary Harris sorts out schools
Local colleges are on guard's list
Jul. 6, 2011

Gary Harris doesn't have anything to prove this month.

The Hamilton Southeastern senior-to-be is ranked as one of the top-25 high school basketball players in the Class of 2012.

Harris, of Fishers, Ind., has dozens of college scholarship offers to pick from. He also has some Football Bowl Subdivision offers on the table as a wide receiver.

?Gary Harris is an elite-level athlete,? Scout.com national analyst Brian Snow said. ?He's already one of the top players in the country, and he continues to make huge strides each year. He's the complete player to rarely see in high school.?

But the 6-foot-4 guard is undecided on where he'll attend college, which makes the next few weeks key for Harris. The July evaluation period for college coaches begins today.

?I am ready for it,? Harris said with a smile last month during the NBA Players Association Top 100 Camp in Charlottesville, Va. ?Schools that I am in contact with, they pretty much know where they all stand right now.?

Harris, one of the leading candidates for Mr. Basketball next season in the Hoosier State, has been talking to Indiana, Louisville, Michigan State, Purdue, Notre Dame and Illinois, among others.

Gary Harris speculation
Jul. 11, 2011
Written by Indianapolis Star sports

There seems to be a frenzy among Purdue basketball fans centering on Hamilton Southeastern?s Gary Harris now that Dublin (Ohio) Coffman point guard Kyle Molock has reopened the recruiting process and won?t become a Boilermaker.

With Molock out of the Class of 2012 picture, yes, Matt Painter now has a scholarship available if Harris wants it. But there?s the big question ? does Harris, the son of former Purdue women?s star Joy Holmes Harris ? want to be a Boilermaker?

Unlike many of his peers, the 6-5 Harris isn?t tipping his hand. In fact, he may shock the world and decide to play football at Notre Dame or Alabama. An excellent wide receiver, Harris is being pursued by the Fighting Irish and Cirmson Tide football coaching staffs.

On the basketball front, Indiana, Michigan State and Louisville ? along with Purdue ? are on Harris? radar screen. If you believe fan chatter, the Boilermakers may be gaining in the race for Harris, but I?m still skeptical. A lot of the positive vibes from the Purdue message boards is wishful thinking. Molock is out, so Harris comes to West Lafayette.
