'12 MI LB James Ross (Michigan Signee)

PREP FOOTBALL STATE FINALS: For Orchard Lake St. Mary's, losing to EGR is getting OLD

By ROSS MAGHIELSE
Of The Oakland Press

DETROIT - Orchard Lake St. Mary's almost won another football state championship. Yet, the Eaglets came up short, 35-27, at the hands of East Grand Rapids in the Division 3 state championship game late Saturday night.

St. Mary's does have four state titles in its trophy case, but the last three trips to the championship game have ended with a loss to the Pioneers.

For the Eaglets, the trend is getting old.

"I got one more year, and we're gonna use this as motivation going into next year so we can come out and be better," St. Mary's junior linebacker James Ross said. "I'm getting back in the weight room this week and we're going to start looking ahead to next year right now. The only positive thing we can take from this is more motivation to get better next year and we have to use that."

Ross, a special mention for the All-State team who will likely draw interest from Division I colleges over the summer and into next season, will be a key factor for the Eaglets defense if they are able to make another run at a state title.

This was the offer I was hoping to see go out with the next batch...I thought it might take another junior day visit but glad to hear he is on the staff's big board. Perry and Ross would make a great tandem. Not sure what this does to Rippy but if OSU lands Ross and/or Rippy to go along with Perry I will be ecstatic.

Great news on the offer!

I haven't seen much film on either, how would you compare Ross and Rippy, and do you have a preference?

We took 4 LBs last year
We have limited scollys this year.

I have a hard time see more than two. Thoughts?

Also, why are we offering TEs for that matter. Took two last year. Do we really need another one this year?

We're "the real Linebacker U" for a reason. You take the best LB in a class regardless of who you currently have on the roster. Look at the losses of Moeller and McVey we've had to deal with recently...injuries/attrition happens. A deep pool can become farily shallow quickly.

Since we seem to actually be using TEs other than a sixth lineman, there's nothing wrong with having 3-4 on hand. One or more could possibly outgrow the postion and slide down to the line, or injuries could deplete the position.

With the best winning percentage in all of college football since 2002, along with a national title and five total BCS bowl wins during that time, I think the staff has a clue of what they're doing.

It appears our friends on GBW got the somber news:

Abounding irony:

For the love of god, I can't think of one good reason why someone from the state of Michigan could grow up rooting for that **** hole of a school, it really boogles my mind. I mean he does realize its in Ohio right? Hopefully Mattison and Hoke can convince him Michigan is where its at and not that giant trailer park called Columbus.

For a school that couldn't do a thing without Ohio athletes (let alone their coaches). :shake:

Hadn't heard anything about James in quite a while! Thought the staff might have been looking in a different direction.

Really like this kid. He's a ball-seeking missle and he does everything at 100mph. Love the way he tackles too. He's Brian Rolle guarding the run from sideline to sideline. I'd like to see more of his coverage skills, because he looks like he could do really well sticking with receivers with that speed. The way he blitzes doesn't give the RB or the QB much time to react either.

My one concern with him is that he goes so hard and so fast after everything that I could see him over-pursuing or biting too hard on ball fakes. That said, a huge strength of his seems to be the ability to make decisions as fast as he can run (and James FLIES at his LB spot) and the ability to change direction on a dime, which helps make up for any overpursuit. You could see this in his film a few times and despite the fact he overran the play, he still was able to change his direction, take a good angle, and make the play on the ball carrier. You can't teach that.

And if THAT weren't enough, if we were so fortunate to land him, we'd be stealing him ought from under home-state skunkbear AND Sparty's noses. It doesn't get much better than that.
