Center
Tilton, New Hampshire
Tilton School
AAU: BABC
Ht:6'10"
Wt:200 lbs
Class:2013 (High School)

Strengths:
An absolutely incredible shot blocker with uncanny defensive instincts. Noel has good size, length, and quick bounce to go along with precise timing and incredible mobility and agility. He is like a one-man zone with his ability to protect the basket inside the paint but is also a threat to fly out to the perimeter and erase mistakes when the situations warrants. Offensively, he has some rapidly emerging tools. He gets a ton of dunks inside the paint, both from guard's penetration and the offensive glass, because he can catch and bounce into the dunk so quickly. He can make a jump hook over either shoulder, is a terrific passer from the low post, and has a quick spin move when facing up.

Weaknesses:
Still lean, Noel needs to continue to fill out his frame in a way in which will keep his mobility intact but allow him to play through contact with more consistently. His offensive game also needs to continue to progress as he can make jump hooks with both feet planted but can rush the shot at times as well. He needs to shoot the ball better from the elbow and short corner and also become a more consistent three-point shooter.

Bottom Line:
He may already be in the best shot-blocker in the country with absolutely uncanny physical gifts and defensive instincts. With a rapidly expanding offensive game, and solid work ethic and good court demeanor, the sky is absolutely the limit.

SLAM catches up with The Tilton School?s Nerlens Noel.
by Norman Waterman

In New England, they know all about defense on the basketball court. This is the home of Bill Russell, the greatest defensive force ever seen on a basketball floor, and more recently Kevin Garnett, who has carved out a niche as a defensive specialist in an era of offensive play. There may be a new guy for New Englanders to talk about though.

Nerlens Noel, the Everett, Massachusetts native who plays his high school ball at The Tilton School in New Hampshire has become a defensive force and gained national attention in Orlando this summer when he became a one man wrecking crew and blocked 4-shots in 90-seconds to preserve the National Championship win for the 16 & under BABC squad (Boston Amateur Basketball Club). Nerlens, who stands 6-foot 10, is the #3 rated sophomore in the country in almost every poll. SLAM caught up with him to talk about the national title and his high school season so far.

SLAM: So how did it feel to win a National Championship this summer for BABC?
Nerlens Noel: Oh man, it felt great. We really played hard all summer and we are all so close that it was great to pull that out as a team.

Nerlens Noel is nation's best defender
July, 12, 2011
By Dave Telep, ESPN Recruiting

1. Noel best shot blocker since Oden?

The best defensive player in the country isn't a senior. It is junior Nerlens Noel (Boston/ Tilton).

"He makes everything easy all the time because you know you have a dominant shot-blocker back there," BABC junior point guard Jaylen Brantley (Springfield, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson) said.

The stat sheet said Noel had 12 points and eight boards versus All-Iowa but only three blocks. The fact of the matter is Noel dominated play in the first half where Iowa scored just 12 points. All-Iowa Attacks big three of Marcus Paige, Mike Gesell and Adam Woodbury shot 8-27 from the field. Nerlens was in the neighborhood.

I've heard a lot of people criticize his offense and that's true, he has work to do but he's not a bad offensive player, he's just a superstar on defense. He has the work ethic and the offense will come. Pre-summer, Noel listed UConn, Kansas, Georgetown, Kentucky and Florida. Florida coach Billy Donovan was at his first game and Kentucky coach John Calipari and Kansas coach Bill Self popped in during the contest. You can bet North Carolina coach Roy Williams, who also caught his opener, is interested.

Noel isn't the prospect Greg Oden was at the same age, but it's been that long since high school basketball has seen a natural shot-blocker of that caliber. Anthony Davis was excellent last year but Noel is threatening to join an elite club of rejectors.

Noel the center of attention at Peach Jam
Massachusetts big man swats BABC to EYBL championship game with dominating effort against Oakland Soldiers.
By: Jason Hickman | MaxPreps.com

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. ? From the outset of Friday morning's EYBL semifinal between the Boston Amateur Basketball Club (BABC) and Oakland Soldiers, Nerlens Noel controlled the action.

At times it seemed almost unfair.

The 6-foot-10, 210-pound Everett, Mass., native hurried, disrupted, discouraged or flat-out erased countless shot attempts by the Soldiers en route to 11 blocks and more importantly, a surprisingly-easy 74-60 victory for BABC that wasn't as close as the final score indicated.

Noel added 12 points and 10 rebounds to lead BABC to Friday night's EYBL/Peach Jam championship game against Memphis YOMCA. The contest will be televised live on ESPNU at 7 p.m. EDT.

"I try to anchor the defense for my team, get everybody contributing and let the offense come," Noel said.

That's been a successful formula for Noel all week. Rated No. 3 in MaxPreps.com's Class of 2013 Top 100, he is averaging 11.5 points, 8.8 rebounds and 7.1 blocked shots per game in the EYBL Finals at the Nike Peach Jam. While his scoring numbers aren't eye-popping, he has the ability to wow on the offensive end with baseline drives (usually finished with a dunk), alley-oops (dunk) and put-backs (again, dunk).

His offensive arsenal may be limited at this point, but his college choices won't be. While he is nowhere near a decision, coaches from powerhouse programs like Connecticut, Duke, Florida, Kansas, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio State and Syracuse have made their presence felt at his games this week at the Riverview Park Activities Center.

Nerlens Noel, 6-10 center, Everett, Mass. (JUNIOR) I normally wouldn't highlight a player who's basically a specialist, but when he does that specialty so well you have to tip your hat. In this case, Noel is the best shot blocker in high school, regardless of class. He is plenty tall but has the wingspan of someone several inches taller. He also has that uncanny presence and timing that all the great shot blockers have. Noel is also an effective rebounder who can make you cringe when he attempts a 10-foot jumper, but given how young he is I doubt that will dissuade any of the big boys from going after him.

Kid is probably as good offensively right now as Johnson was as a college junior. He can put the ball on the floor a little and has good touch around the rim. Parker and Randle are the best two players in the class, but Noel is not far behind.

Kid can't shoot a jumper yet, but has time to develop one. I say Kevin Garnett comp. without the crazy.

Dwight Howard STILL doesn't have a jumper, and he's doing just fine for himself. Ben Wallace NEVER had a jumper. As a center, you don't need to drift outside the paint, though a little range couldn't hurt. If he can make shots 10ft and in, and he is THIS good already on defense, and can rebound... then he'll be a great player.

I wasn't saying a jumper was key to being a center. Those guys are/were a lot stronger and could just force their way to the hoop. Plus, it would complete my Garnett comp if he had a jumper :) I guess by just saying what he didn't have it seemed as if I didn't think he was good; I actually think the complete opposite. Would love for him to be a buckeye (wishful thinking though).

I saw the ESPNU guys saying Noel is one of the top shotblockers to come out of HS in recent years ... I'm not sure Matta has anybody who's an elite (i.e., Big Ten block leader) shotblocking center on the roster right now. Noel is intriguing for sure - but of course it seems likely that Calimari will sink his tentacles into Noel, if he hasn't already.

Amir Williams should be a very good shot blocker. He's getting close to 7' and his wingspan is close to 7'6". He's shown in HS and AAU that he can block shots but it's not the same as B1G basketball.

Noel, on the other hand could probably lead the conference in blocks right now. I live how nasty he plays in the paint.

Nerlens Noel Says He Won?t Reclassify (UPDATED)
By Adam Zagoria on October 06, 2011

Nerlens Noel, the No. 1 center in the Class of 2013, considered reclassifying to the Class of 2012, but says he won?t do it.

?I?m not reclassifying and I will be cutting my [college] list before the season starts,? Noel told SNY.tv Thursday by text.

Earlier Thursday, Tilton headmaster James Clements said Noel and his family were mulling the reclassification process.

?Tilton School has a written procedure and process for students and families who may wish to seek a reclassification of grade,? Clements told SNY.tv.

?Nerlens and his family are considering whether they wish to initiate that process, and to my knowledge as of today there?s no decision been made.?

Clements said the reclassification process ?takes about a month? and he estimated that it?s ?probably happened four times in the last five years? at Tilton.

Noel was born April 10, 1994. He is 17 now and would be 19 on April 10, 2013, making him eligible for the NBA Draft that year if he were a year removed from his high school graduating class.

?If there is an NBA Draft, sure he would be a lottery pick because they draft entirely on potential,? New York recruiting expert Tom Konchalski told SNY.tv. ?He?s gotta get stronger and do a lot of things but he certainly would be? a lottery pick.

He added: ??If he is reclassifying the whole point is to point him toward the 2013 NBA Draft rather than 2014.?

Konchalski joked that Noel would actually be ?declassifying? rather than ?reclassifying? because he believes he was originally in the Class of 2012.

?Usually reclassifying means you add another year,? Konchalski said. ?This means he would subtract a year. He would be declassifying because he was reclassified coming in.?
