Amile Jefferson shines late in McDonald's game

CHICAGO - Amile Jefferson didn't get a chance to show his skills to his various college suitors until late on Wednesday.

But with 3 minutes, 42 seconds left in the 2012 McDonald's All-American boys' basketball game, the two-time Gatorade Pennsylvania player of the year finally got his opening.

Jefferson hauled in a long feed on a fastbreak and delivered a two-handed jam to the delight of the United Center crowd.

Two minutes later, he had another.

The 6-foot-8 forward from Friends' Central played 14 minutes for an East team that fell, 106-102, to the West in an entertaining game that turned from a 25-point blowout into a late thriller.

Jefferson finished with eight points, three rebounds, two steals, and an assist in the second game of an all-star doubleheader in front of around 17,000 fans.

He averaged 19.9 points and 10.2 rebounds for the Phoenix this past season and is still weighing Kentucky, Duke, North Carolina State, Villanova, and Ohio State as possible college destinations.

Schramm: Amile Jefferson's decision still has area fans on edge

Want to get the hardcore Duke basketball fan in your life agitated? Feel the need to cause a spike in the blood pressure of that passionate N.C. State hoops fan you know?

Just bring up the subject of unsigned power forward Amile Jefferson. That should do the trick.

The 6-foot-9 Jefferson has been a target of both schools for months. While all of the other offseason dominoes have fallen, his decision is the only remaining tantalizing mystery.

In the strange media environment of recruiting - where rumors, cryptic hints and the words of teenagers are often about as sturdy a source of information as one can get - Jefferson's choice has become a juicy story. The only problem is that it's lasted far longer than many expected.

For fans of teams with a shot at him, the suspense has gone from exciting to draining.

"I'm hoping it's soon," Jefferson told Scout.com. "It's day-to-day. We're going to sit down and give each coach one more call."

Don't forget that Kentucky, Ohio State and hometown option Villanova are still in the mix and the spring signing period runs until May 16.

Hoops: Jefferson to announce college destination

Friends' Central basketball star Amile Jefferson will announce his college destination Tuesday in a 4 p.m. press conference at the school.

"The process has been tough, for sure, " the 6-foot-7, 200-pound senior said. "But it's time for me to make a decision. I have to do it."

Jefferson's finalists are North Carolina State, Duke, Kentucky, Ohio State, and Villanova. "I'm still looking at all those schools," he said Friday night.

N.C. State and Duke, who began seriously recruiting Jefferson in early January, are believed to be the top two contenders.
