I saw this kid play this summer. He looks like a linebacker. Very strong player going to the basket. Shooting was OK, but did not dribble as well as the other guards. He is athletic and strong. I hear Tennesse has already offered.

IU has offered as well. I can't imagine purdue being too far behind, but painter seems to hold off until spring of frosh yr at the earliest on offers.

DSR has had a very good start to his HS career averaging around 20 ppg and adding quite a few rebs in as well. he and patterson could both be top 25 for 2012. Patterson is averaging similar numbers (slightly lower) - but be aware he is the main focus already for opposing defenders. a lot of the attention that would be otherwise spent on DSR is directed at north centrals other very good guards, most notably 2010 purdue commit terone johnson.

While DSR has more press right now, patterson is the superior athlete and could very well end up being the higher profile recruit. that said, you don't doubt guards from north central.

I expect OSU to be active on both players. its hard to nail down leaders for each this early - i do know patterson has made many trips to purdue already and his entire broadripple team has come up a few times as well. So far purdue has shown a lot more interest than anyone else, but that is changing fast.

DSR, on the other hand, is already a focus for a lot of schools. He's hard to nail down - he'll likely be playing for eric gordon's new AAU team along with terone johnson, dominique ferguson, and justin martin so there are ties to louisville, UK, IU and purdue there.

D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera also had a good day on Sunday. The powerfully built guard is at his best using his strength to get to the rim and finish, but also he is capable of knocking down shots from deep when he gets a clean look. At the moment his strength is tough for most 15 and under players to deal with, and Smith-Rivera uses that to his advantage.

UPDATE: 2:50 p.m. - I headed over to Bloomington South to watch the 15-and-under Indiana Elite Team Indiana destroy the JSA Express 58-24. IE Team Indiana is led by North Central sophomore-to-be D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera, another one of the targets for both Indiana and Purdue in the 2012 class. The powerful 6-3 guard also has offers from Tennessee and Ohio State.

Here's a bit from our conversation:

How's your recruiting situation?

"It's going to pretty good right now. I'm talking to my parents every day about it and pretty soon I'll be narrowing it down and we'll go from there."

What do you talk about with your parents?

"We go over what schools we are looking at and try to communicate as much as we can. We try not to worry about it too much right now, but we're looking into it."

Are you still at the point where you are gathering information?

"Pretty much. Most of the time I just want to leave it up to my parents because I get a little tired of it so I put it in their hands for the most part."

What schools are recruiting you?

"I've received offers from IU, Purdue, Tennessee and Ohio State and I've received interest from Wake Forest, UCLA and Michigan State."

Does location matter?

"I'd have to get out and really see the schools to know. IU of course is close and I know about their program."

Have you gotten to know Tom Crean at all?

"He's a really nice person, even outside of basketball. I really have a lot of respect for him."

How about Matt Painter at Purdue?

"I've been there a few times to talk to him. Just like coach Crean, he's easy to get along with and communicate with."

Do those guys talk to you about what they'd like to see from you?

"They pretty much leave that up to (North Central coach Doug Mitchell). But they know my strengths and what I need to work on."

Do you keep up with guys like Marquis Teague and his recruiting?

"We've been friends since we were younger kids. I wouldn't make a decision on where I'd go based on what he does, but it could have a little impact. It all depends."

What's Marquis say about his recruiting?

"He said he's ready to get it over with. He's trying to be patient with it right now, but there's a lot going on."

What's a timeline for you?

"By this time next year I think my parents and I will be ready to decide. I talked to my mom about it last night. I think I'll be ready."

A year from now, North Central sophomore-to-be D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera hopes to be closing in on a college decision. The 6-3 combo guard -- who's playing on the 15-and-under Indiana Elite Team Indiana -- has offers from Indiana, Ohio State, Purdue and Tennessee and is getting interest from Michigan State, UCLA and Wake Forest.

"This time next year I think my parents and I will be ready to decide," he said. "I think I'll be ready."

North Central's Smith-Rivera getting stronger for his sophomore year

Here's a scary thought for North Central High School basketball opponents: D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera started training with weights this week.

"I really haven't done it much before," said the solidly built 6-3 sophomore guard. "My coach, Doug Mitchell, wants to get me in there and get stronger."

Smith-Rivera is already one of the area's best at finishing around the basket. Teaming with senior Terone Johnson, a Purdue recruit, the Panthers should have one of the state's top backcourts.

Smith-Rivera shined on the 15-and-under Indiana Elite, attracting quite a following from major Division I coaches. Already with offers from Indiana, Purdue and Tennessee, Smith-Rivera said he's planning an unofficial visit soon to North Carolina. He also has a trip scheduled this weekend that will take him to campuses at Kentucky, Louisville and Xavier.

"I'm looking forward to the visits," Smith-Rivera said. "You see a lot of the coaches out at the tournaments, but it's nice to be able to see the school."
Smith-Rivera visited the North Carolina campus during a tournament in May. "I'd be interested in going there," he said. "I like how they run the program. I liked the school. Hopefully I'll get an offer."

Welcome, it's a new basketball season!

The Madness began earlier tonight and there are plenty of recruits on campus all across the nation, including at the three local schools.

The biggest news of the night came out of Bloomington, Ind., for Indiana coach Tom Crean.

After word leaked on Wednesday that stud Indianapolis sophomore D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera would be on the Xavier campus and miss Hoosier Hysteria there were some that thought IU was losing ground for the prized prospect.

But on Friday night, Smith-Rivera made his way to Assembly Hall and was under a basket watching the Hysteria. I heard he might have made a trip to Xavier earlier in the day but as of right now the only confirmation is that he was at Hoosier Hysteria.

Smith-Rivera: Kentucky and Ohio State showing interest

North Central sophomore D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera is one of the two tallest players on his high school team at North Central. That's not the case once the travel basketball season begins. The 6-4 Smith-Rivera's Indiana Elite Team Indiana teammates include 7-footers Obij Aget and Peter Jurkin and 6-8 Hanner Perea.

While Smith-Rivera is more of a small forward with North Central (he was the Panthers' leading rebounder), he primarily plays point guard for Indiana Elite.

"I like handling the ball a little more," he said. "That's something I've been working on during the season and last summer, also."

Smith-Rivera, who averaged 17.7 points and 6.1 rebounds as a sophomore, said Kentucky and Ohio State have begun to show more interest in his recruitment. He said he's talked with his parents about starting to whittle down his list of schools, but added that he's in no rush. He doesn't necessarily guage his interest in a school by other players' commitments.

"I would to base it off what I'm looking for in a college and what suits me best," Smith-Rivera. "My mom is pretty much at the core of the process and I talk to her about it almost every day."

Smith-Rivera said he has tentative plans to make unofficial visits to North Carolina and Georgetown this summer. His current offer list includes Cincinnati, Indiana, Louisville, Purdue, Tennessee and Xavier.
