'12 VA SG D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera (Georgetown Verbal)

I am totally befuddled with this guy's recruitment and OSU so far.

There is a rumor long ago posted that he'd be Thad's if he wanted him/offered. Then reportedly Thad does offer but he doesn't jump at it after all.

Then I'd heard several places that we were cut from his consideration completely - like there was some bad blood from his camp toward Thad for some reason.

Now he reports we are picking up interest of late, but does not list an offer from OSU.

Weird chain of events.

Adidas May Classic: Q&A with D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera

I still have a few interviews in my tape recorder from this weekend's Adidas May Classic. D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera, the North Central standout who led his Indiana Elite team to the 16 and under title over the weekend in Bloomington, spent a few minutes with myself and several members of the media. From that interview comes this Q&A with DSR.

(Talk about how the AAU season has been going for you?)

"I've been working on becoming more athletic. I think that has helped by defending some smaller guards. I've been working on my jump shot. Just coming down off the dribble and being able to knock down that shot.''

(Is there an area of you game that you're focusing on this summer?)

:"I wouldn't say one particular area. I can become a better player all around so I'm working on everything.''

2012 Intro: D?Vauntes Smith-Rivera
by Alex Bozich in Recruiting | June 2nd, 2010

The Essentials: 6-3, 220-lb guard for North Central and Indiana Elite

The Schools: Cincinnati, Indiana, Louisville, Purdue, Tennessee and Xavier have offered scholarships. Georgetown, Kentucky, North Carolina and Ohio State have expressed interest.

The Numbers: 19.5 ppg for North Central, which won the 4A state championship.

The Quote: ?You can really see that they want to get better and they want to become a better team. They?re all about winning games and whatever it takes to get the job done, that?s what they?re gonna do.? ? Smith-Rivera to Inside the Hall after watching IU?s open practice last fall.

The Ranking: ESPN.com ranks Smith-Rivera the 24th best prospect in the 2012 class.

The Scout Says: ?After struggling some with his outside shot at the beginning of the season, Smith-Rivera has caught fire from deep and is now a very reliable shooter. He is still at his best going to the rim using his power and great ability to change speeds, but now that the perimeter jumper keeps defenders honest he is even tougher to deal with.? ? Rivals.com analyst Brian Snow on Smith-Rivera?s performance at the adidas May Classic.

D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera and his family will visit St. Benedict's Preparatory School in Newark, N.J., this weekend, and a decision on his high school future will probably be made within a week.

D'Vantes Smith-Rivera, here driving to the basket in the Adidas May Classic in Bloomington, is arguably the state's top prospect in the 2012 class. - For The Star

The 6-4 North Central standout, arguably the state's top prospect in the 2012 class, said last month he was exploring the possibility of playing the next two years at St. Benedict's, which is coached by former Indiana assistant Roshown McLeod.

Morristown's Dylan Langkabel, who will also be a junior next season, plans to enroll at St. Benedict's.

Smith-Rivera averaged 17.7 points and 6.1 rebounds as a sophomore and helped the Panthers to the Class 4A state championship. Although Purdue recruit Terone Johnson will be gone to graduation, North Central would likely again be a top contender for the state title with Smith- Rivera.

His mother, Kelana Rivera, said the family is considering the move to allow the oldest of her three sons "to play different top-level kids from around the country."

Kelana Rivera added that "North Central also has a lot to offer," and she hoped to have a decision made quickly out of respect to North Central coach Doug Mitchell and the rest of the team.

"I think we'll know if it's the right situation right away," she said.

Smith-Rivera has scholarship offers from Cincinnati, Indiana, Louisville, Purdue, Tennessee and Xavier. His mother said the transfer to New Jersey, where his family may also move, could bring East Coast teams into the mix.

"I think it will give him some added exposure to schools out there," Rivera said.

Rivera said she talked with Mitchell this week and said "he will be the first to know" if the family decides to move.

"We talked and he made some really good points," she said. "We also have a lot of family here that won't be too happy if we leave."

One of top 2012 players still deciding between prep school and high school
Posted by Kyle Neddenriep

North Central junior-to-be D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera and his family visited St. Benedict's Preparatory School in New Jersey over the weekend as a possible destination for next year. His mother, Kelana Rivera, had hoped the family would know as soon as it left which school he'd be attending. That didn't happen.

Rivera said it was a "good visit" but it "didn't make the decision any easier."

"We thought there might be a feeling of one direction over the other, but that's not the case," she said. "We're still trying to weigh the pros and cons of both. We're still hoping to decide this week, but can't say for sure. It'll be sooner rather than later, though."

Rivera said her son, a 6-4 guard with offers from Cincinnati, Indiana, Louisville, Purdue, Tennessee and Xavier, "still isn't 100 percent sure" on what he wants to do. He didn't play with his North Central teammates in a team camp in Anderson on Monday.

"He's with some of his friends and teammates tonight and hopefully they are giving him some feedback," Rivera said. "I know he's thinking about what is future will be in both scenarios. Both schools are great academically and both have great basketball programs. It's a big decision and there are two really good options."

Smith-Rivera averaged 17.7 points as a sophomore for the Class 4A state champions. In two years, he would figure to be one of the top candidates for Indiana's Mr. Basketball.

"He likes it here," Rivera said. "He has great friends here and it's familiar. Those are things that make it such a tough decision."

North Central basketball junior-to-be D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera will be out for a few weeks with a slight meniscus tear in his right knee. North Central coach Doug Mitchell said it was likely that the 6-3 Smith-Rivera had been playing through the injury.

Smith-Rivera will probably miss all of the July college coaches evaluation period, although it's not yet known if he will have surgery, said his mother, Kelana Rivera. Smith-Rivera, who picked up a scholarship offer from Ohio State on an unofficial visit Wednesday, had surgery last September on the same knee.

Smith-Rivera close to return from knee injury

It?s been a long three months for D?Vauntes Smith-Rivera. The 6-4 North Central junior suffered a meniscus tear in his right knee (he suffered a similar injury to his right knee before his sophomore season) and has been limited to non-basketball drills and rehabilitation ever since.

That wait should finally come to an end Monday when he visits the doctor again. He expects to be cleared to play.

?(The doctors) fully repaired it this time so it?ll help me be a lot stronger with it this season,? said Smith-Rivera, who averaged 17.7 points for the Class 4A state champion Panthers last season. ?It?s been frustrating. I?ve been working on getting back into shape and I am and working on those muscles around my knee doing leg presses and curls and squats. I pretty much hate not being able to play, but at the same time realize they want to be cautious and see how much I can do.?

While Smith-Rivera hasn?t been able to compete in open gyms with the rest of his teammates, he?s taken note of which schools have been in to check on him. Last month, he narrowed his choices to six: Georgetown, Indiana, Miami (Fla.), Ohio State, Wake Forest and Xavier. All but Georgetown of those schools have offered him a scholarship.

?I?m starting to see who?s really interested,? said Smith-Rivera, who added that Indiana coach Tom Crean was in last week. ?Those schools have been showing a lot of interest. I?m getting a good feel for a lot of those schools. I want to go where I can get a quality education and a program that can best develop me as a player.?

Asked if he might make a decision before the season, Smith-Rivera said ?probably not.? He plans to visit Xavier the weekend of Oct. 23 and said he may also get to Indiana and Ohio State soon.

Xavier gets commitment for 2012

By Shannon Russell ? [email protected] ? October 23, 2010

CINCINNATI -- D?Vauntes Smith-Rivera, one of the nation's top players in the Class of 2012, orally committed to Xavier?s men?s basketball program after Musketeer Madness at Cintas Center.

Smith-Rivera said he didn?t intend to commit Saturday ? but decided then that XU was the right place for him.

?It was kind of a last-second decision. I wanted to do what was best for me and my family,? Smith-Rivera said.

He chose the program because of his comfort with the staff, particularly coach Chris Mack, and believes they can make him the best possible college player. Smith-Rivera said his news was met with great reception.

?(Mack) was very excited. When I told him, he jumped up and hugged me and said ?Welcome to the family,?? Smith-Rivera said.

The 6-foot-4 junior at North Central High (Ind.) is ranked 29th in his class on ESPN.com and 25th among 2012 prospects on Rivals.com. He picked XU over a bevy of schools, including Indiana, Ohio State and Georgetown.

Smith-Rivera is a shooting guard for his high school team, where he averaged about 20 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists as a sophomore. He believes he'll be a point guard at XU.

North Central High School's D'Vauntes Smith-Rivera, one of the top junior basketball prospects in the country, committed to Xavier while on an unofficial visit to the school late Saturday night.

Smith-Rivera, who cut his list of finalists to Georgetown, Indiana, Miami (Fla.), Ohio State, Wake Forest and Xavier last month, averaged 17.7 points last season for the Class 4A champions as a sophomore.

He is ranked as the No. 25 prospect nationally in his class by Rivals.com and the No. 3 junior point guard.

Last week, Smith-Rivera said he started to get a "good feel" for which schools were really interested in him.

He had been sidelined for three months -- he was cleared to resume playing on Monday -- with a meniscus tear in his right knee.
