Jabari Parker's dad would like NBA option
July, 10, 2011
By Scott Powers

Sonny Parker isn?t sure whether his son Jabari Parker, ESPN?s No. 2 Class of 2013 basketball prospect, would jump straight to the NBA out of high school, but he would like him to have that option.

Parker, a former NBA player with the Golden State Warriors, is closely watching what happens between the league?s players and owners as they work out a new NBA collective bargaining agreement. Parker would like for the NBA to eliminate its current rule where a player must be 19 years old and one year removed from high school to play in the NBA.

?I?m not about stopping people from making a living,? Parker said on Sunday.

If the NBA returned to its previous rule that allowed players to enter the league immediately after high school, Parker said they would consider that route for Jabari, who is a 6-9 swingman and attends Simeon in Chicago.

?That?ll be an option,? Parker said. ?With me and my wife, we?ll talk to him. We?re going to do a lot of homework and research and make sure we?re getting the right information.

?Right now, he has two years of high school left, and he?s looking forward to going to college. We?ve never talked to him about going to the NBA. That?s one thing we haven?t discussed with him. One thing we?ve always discussed with him about was school. That?s the priority now.?
Parker said a few new schools had jumped into his son?s recruiting mix. Parker said Connecticut, Kentucky, Ohio State and Stanford were now among the schools recruiting him.

Parker still doesn?t expect his son to commit until at least next summer.

Parker likes the winning tradition at Kansas
Posted by Alex Schwartz On July - 12 - 2011

According to many, 6-foot-7 small forward Jabari Parker is the best player in the nation regardless of class. A 2013 prospect out of Simeon (IL), Parker had his wide array of talents on display at the LeBron James Skills Academy.

He displayed a fantastic overall skill set and a basketball IQ well beyond his years, demonstrating why big-time college hoops programs from coast to coast are hot on his trail.

Parker said he has a top five that includes Michigan State, Illinois, Kansas, Washington, and Duke. In addition, Parker said DePaul, Purdue, UConn, Florida, and Ohio State are the other colleges in his top 10.

Chicago's Jabari Parker balances faith, fierceness on the court

Jabari-Parker.jpg

Rising junior Jabari Parker averaged 17.7 points over six games at Nike's Peach Jam tournament last week.
Kelly Kline/NIKE

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. -- Before Jabari Parker takes the floor to play a basketball game, he sits by himself in the locker room for a couple of minutes of prayer and reflection. "I pray that God keeps me safe on the floor, and that I'm able to have a good attitude towards my teammates," he says. When the game ends, Parker heeds that higher calling by rushing to be first in line to shake hands. "I just want to show the opponents that I'm grateful," he says. "I want to show good sportsmanship."

In between those displays of piety, Parker reveals something that is truly divine: a game as good as his attitude. A 6-foot-8, 220-pound rising junior at Chicago's Simeon High, Parker is a lithe, graceful, intelligent swingman who has the length and athleticism to play power forward, yet dashes and darts with the ball like an expert point guard. He sinks feathery three-pointers as easily as he drops in finger rolls at the rim. One college assistant coach who is recruiting Parker says he reminds him of Grant Hill, "except Jabari is a better shooter." Adds Evan Daniels, the national basketball recruiting analyst for Scout.com, "He has put himself in the conversation as the best player in high school basketball, not just his class. His offensive package has developed to the point where there's not much he can't do."

Parker further cemented that reputation last week, when he averaged 17.7 points over six games while competing for the Mac Irvin Fire at Nike's prestigious Peach Jam tournament in North Augusta, S.C. That followed a whirlwind three weeks that began with Parker putting up 27 points and 10 rebounds in Team USA's gold medal win over Brazil at the FIBA Americas Under 16 championships in Cancun, Mexico. He was also a standout performer at the LeBron James Skills Academy in Akron, Ohio, earlier this month. All of that comes on the heels of a sophomore season at Simeon High that saw Parker average 15 points and six rebounds while leading his team to its second consecutive Class 4A state championship.

Parker is so versatile that his position in game programs is often listed as "G/F/C." Throw in a 3.4 grade-point average and it's clear why he'll have his choice of any college in the country. Jabari's recruitment is only just beginning in earnest, but he has already paid unofficial visits to Ohio State, Kentucky, Kansas, Michigan State, Illinois and Duke. He plans on visiting several more schools (including Stanford) in the next few months.

Jabari Parker: The next Oscar Robertson?

Some people compare Jabari Parker to Paul Pierce because of his versatile offensive game.

Parker, though, is aiming a little bit higher for his NBA comparison. As in, the only player in NBA history to average a triple-double for a single season: Oscar Robertson.

?He played all positions,? Parker said. ?He was way before his time.?

Nation's top college coaches coming to Simeon
September, 13, 2011
By Scott Powers

It?s got to be one heck of a high school open gym if there?s a hospitality room beforehand.

Simeon plans to pull out all the stops on Tuesday when it hosts nearly every top college men?s basketball coach in the country for its first open gym during the September recruiting period.

Expected to be in attendance are coaches from Arizona, Connecticut, DePaul, Duke, Illinois, Kansas, Marquette, North Carolina, Ohio State, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Villanova, UCLA and Washington, among others. Duke alone is supposed to be coming with three coaches.

?You name them, they?ll be here,? said Simeon coach Robert Smith, who has won back-to-back Class 4A state championships. ?It?s going to be crazy.?

Junior forward Jabari Parker is the main attraction. Parker is considered the No. 1 Class of 2013 player in the country by ESPN.

Nation's elite coaches gather for star recruit
September, 14, 2011
By Eamonn Brennan

Jabari Parker is the real deal.

This spring, some buddies and I made a trip to DePaul's campus gym to see him play in a city tournament game for his storied high school program here in Chicago, Simeon High School, which also produced NBA MVP Derrick Rose. Even as a sophomore with a huge amount of hype, Parker didn't disappoint: He's huge (6-foot-8, 220 pounds, and probably still growing), versatile (he dominated in the paint but also stepped out to handle the ball and hit jumpers) and noticeably competitive (I don't remember seeing him coast on a single possession). As Sports Illustrated's Seth Davis discovered this summer, Parker is also a fascinating, thoughtful kid with a winning attitude.

Like I said: He's the No. 1 recruit in the class of 2013 for a reason. He's the real deal.

Still, you don't see this kind of gathering from college basketball coaches all that often. On Tuesday, 40 college coaches -- 40! -- made the trip to Simeon High to watch Parker play at open gym. As Gary Parrish noted yesterday, Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski even showed up in a limo, because Coach K balls so hard, that [stuff's] crazy. ESPN Chicago's Scott Powers was on hand for the event, and it sounds a little surreal:

Krzyzewski was among 40 coaches who took in Simeon's open gym on Tuesday. DePaul coach Oliver Purnell, Illinois coach Bruce Weber, Kansas coach Bill Self, Michigan State coach Tom Izzo, North Carolina coach Roy Williams, Ohio State coach Thad Matta and Texas A&M coach Billy Kennedy were among some of the other coaches in attendance.

"It was crazy," said Simeon coach Rob Smith of all the coaches. "It's something I've never been around in my years of coaching."

With a few exceptions, that roster is a who's who of elite college coaches. You know a player is touted when this many guys are willing to take a flight (and a limo!) through the brutal O'Hare traffic to watch a guy who still has two more years of high school basketball in front of him.

Yep, everybody loves Jabari. There's got to be a sitcom pitch in here somewhere.

Top hoops prospect Parker relies on faith, family
By ANDREW SELIGMAN; AP Sports Writer

CHICAGO ? This is what it's like to be Jabari Parker, the nation's top high school basketball player.

One day he's presenting a project in his Spanish class, turns around and sees Alonzo Mourning. Parker takes a seat and grins. The former Miami Heat star is making a surprise visit to give him the Gatorade Basketball Player of the Year award.

And there are nights like this.

Parker and his teammates from Simeon Career Academy are holed up in a classroom after beating Whitney Young in the Illinois state playoffs.

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski and Michigan State's Tom Izzo were in the stands. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and his wife were there, too, sitting next to Parker's mom, Lola.

As Simeon holds its postgame meeting, a crowd gathers in the hallway, waiting to get a glimpse of the team and its 17-year-old star. Parker slips out a back entrance, trying to make a quiet exit.

Nice try, but no luck. It's hard to hide when you're 6-foot-8 and 220 pounds.
