Evaluation

April, 2010: Julius is a young stud. He is a powerful and athletic low post player. His body, skill and athletic ability are similar to Chris Webber at the same stage. He is a lefty that has a very good handle and often pushes the break after rebounding the ball and even helps breaks the press for his team. He is an excellent passer also. He is outstanding in the low post where he uses his speed, quickness and athleticism to get over and/or around his opponent. He is practically unstoppable on the low block versus his age group. Defensively he is a good shot blocker but does not over commit himself too often so he is able to stay out of foul trouble. Julius runs the floor very well and is very effective on the break. He was very good at the King James Classic as he lead his team to the 15 & under championship. Randle, right now, is definitely one of the 5 best freshmen in the country.

February, 2010: Julius is a very athletic and powerful low post player. He is a lefty that has developing post moves but is reminiscent of a young left handed Chris Webber at the same stage. He has limited range on his shot right now but he scores well inside 10 feet mostly on dunks and developing post moves.

Julius Randle - College Basketball Recruiting 2013 - ESPN

Randle steals the show

The 2013 class hasn't had much of a chance to separate themselves on the national stage at the elite level, but Julius Randle is sure doing his best. The 6-foot-9 power forward is capable of being a big time producer on the floor right now, and the scary thing is that his best basketball is still ahead of him.

Randle had it working on Thursday.
The Texas Titans know their own scouting report, that is for sure. There is no doubt on that team who the best player is, and the Titans get him the ball nearly every trip down the floor. On Thursday Randle showed off the complete skill set that makes him such a special prospect.

For a big player, Randle is surprisingly comfortable and effective on the perimeter. Because he is so big, Randle is often guarded by an opposing team's center, and quite honestly that isn't fair to the young man drawing the assignment. Randle absolutely abused his defenders on Thursday by going to the rim off the dribble. What is so impressive about his ability to go off the bounce is that he is equally adept at doing it going to his natural left side or to the right. Quite simply the defender can't cheat because if he does, he will get burned. Also Randle showed the ability to change directions off the bounce which is very rare for a young big man.

While Randle is excellent at getting buckets for himself, what might separate him is his ability to see the floor and pass. He not only is good passing once he gets into the lane off the dribble, but also when his back is to the bucket he is excellent at knowing where the double is coming from, and once that happens it is either a layup or an easy three depending on how the defense goes about it. Randle's passing ability has him drawing comparisons to NBA All-Star Chris Weber at a similar stage.

Julius Randle has offers from Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas, Ohio State, and Baylor. The Longhorns, Tigers, and Jayhawks were sure to be in attendance for his games.

HSH: I know it?s really early, but what schools are on you right now?
JR: The list is really long so I may forget a few, but it?s Texas, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Kansas, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Duke, Baylor, Houston, Missouri, Ohio State? It?s a lot of schools. Like I said, I probably left some schools off.

HSH: Being from Texas, how tough is it going to be to leave Mom?s home cooking?
JR: (Laughs) Yeah it IS good. But I don?t know because we?ve talked about it and she?s thinking about moving with me if I leave.

HSH: Who?s been in during the contact period?

JR: Texas, Oklahoma, Duke, North Carolina, North Carolina State and Houston have all come so far.

Randle Strives for Greatness: It won't be long until Julius Randle is a household name. The five-star recruit from Dallas, TX, is often regarded as the top prospect in the class of 2013 and every top program in the nation has expressed interest in his talents.

Kentucky, North Carolina, Duke, Kansas, Baylor, Ohio State, Texas, Oklahoma and plenty of other schools have either offered or heavily recruited the 6-foot-9 forward. That's because he has the ability to dominate opponents on the perimeter as well as in the paint.

"I watch a lot of Blake Griffin, Amar'e Stoudemire, LeBron James and Kevin Durant," Randle told HOOPSWORLD in a phone interview. "I think my biggest strength is my versatility. I work hard on my skill set and have a versatile inside-outside game that allows me to take smaller guys in the post and then also beat bigger, slower guys out on the perimeter."

Randle describes himself as "a combo forward," but he sees himself playing small forward at the next level. While he knows his college position, he doesn't have any idea which school he'll attend. Unlike most top prospects, he doesn't have a top five and swears that he has yet to put any serious thought into his decision.

"Honestly, I don't even have a list," Randle said. "To be totally honest with you, I never really think about it. I don't wake up in the morning and think about which college I should go to. I really don't because I have so much time. It's a great though and all of those programs have great traditions. They're proven and they have great coaches. To be wanted by all of those colleges is a great feeling."

While Randle has accomplished quite a bit, he hasn't let the recognition go to head or distract him from his long-term goals.

"All I am right now is a player that's good on the high school level, but I'm trying to be great in college and then, hopefully, in the NBA," Randle said. "If I make it to the league, I want to be great. I have bigger goals than being recognized in high school and stuff like that. It doesn't really affect me. I'm grateful that people think I'm a great player and everything, but I have bigger goals than this."

His name is already being mentioned in NBA circles and Randle has already started to hear that he could eventually make it to the league.

"Yeah, I've heard that a little bit," Randle said with a laugh. "Nobody in my inner circle says that because they don't fill my head up with anything and they're always telling me what I need to work on. But fans that I've talked to and even some of my friends had said that. I just tell them that I still have a long way to go."

"I'm a kid before everything," he added. "I like to hang out with my friends and stuff like that. With that said, it's not tough to balance everything because I love the game. You don't have to inspire me to get in the gym or work out or anything like that. I love it."

Randle doesn't want to be good, he wants to be great. He doesn't want to simply beat his opposition, he wants to destroy them. He's constantly working on every facet of his game because he's striving for greatness.

"I want to be totally dominant on the court in every game," Randle said. "When I walk off the court, I want to be known as the best player."

Julius Randle: Balling and burritos
Top ranked sophomore talks about fielding midnight phone calls, camp with Amar'e Stoudemire and much more.
Julius Randle | Junior | Forward | Prestonwood Christian (Plano, Texas)

Julius Randle is the top ranked player in the ESPNU Super 60. As a rising junior, Randle, a forward at Prestonwood Christian (Plano, Texas), is one of the most sought after prospects in the country, regardless of class, with heavyweights like Duke, North Carolina, Kentucky and Texas all hotly pursuing him. Randle has agreed to give ESPN RISE exclusive access to his world by chronicling everything from intimate details about his recruitment to cooking recipes in a monthly diary.

What?s up, world!

Happy Fourth of July to everyone! It?s been a few weeks since my last blog, and I?ve definitely had a lot going on since then.

Most of you know that I ended up not going to the NBA Player?s Association Top 100 Camp. I really wanted to go to that, but I sat down with my mentor Jeff Webster and just looking at my schedule all summer and with all of the things I had going on it was gonna be too much on my body. That?s why I decided to sit that camp out and rest, so I could be fresh at the end of the summer. We?ve still got a long way to go.

I had planned to visit North Carolina and Duke while I was down there so I talked to both of them and told them I?d get down there another time. I?m not sure when I?ll reschedule those visits. I haven?t been to Duke for a visit, so I?ll definitely get down there some time soon hopefully.

Some of you may know this but June 15 at midnight coaches were allowed to call us, and I know for me it was pretty crazy. I was getting calls from a whole bunch of schools. The first school to call me was Baylor. Then Florida, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and Memphis all contacted me just after Baylor.

When I woke up I got calls from Arkansas, Duke, North Carolina, Texas? Just everywhere. I had area codes I didn?t recognize. It was crazy.
