Tyus Jones (6-foot-1 2014 point guard from Apple Valley, Minn.) - Jones has an impeccable feel for the game at the point guard position. His change of pace and court vision are highly developed and his passing is timely, crisp and accurate. He is a poised scorer as well. On the night, he stood out as the top point man.

Tyus Jones 6-0 160 Apple Valley, Apple Valley, MN 2014 ? Jones came in to this event as the newly anointed # 1 ranked PG in the 2014 class by ESPN. He displayed himself quite well. He plays with a maturity and a pace of a much older player. He can shoot the ball to three, create off the bounce, and make the right decisions on the break. With Jones running your team, you don?t have to worry about him making bonehead plays. He is steady and talented and should be one of the elite players in his class when it?s all said and done.

http://www.nbadraft.net/2011-nike-eybl-session-3-los-angeles

Strengths:
Tyus is an extremely mature and poised basketball player. He has the unique ability to make the players around him better. He will not wow you with individual excellence or 40 point scoring prowess. He is not a 5 minute evaluation. His game is one that must be watched and admired over time. He has a good handle and can get in the lane when needed. He is an excellent passer and facilitator, that is the best part of his game. He has the ability to score when needed but prefers to pass.

Weaknesses:
He needs to improve his outside stroke and be a little more aggressive with his style.

Bottom Line:
Jones is smooth and plays with no wasted motion. He makes the right play at the right time, be it a pass, a steal, a rebound or a basket. His basketball IQ is phenomenal for a player so young. He understands how to win and what it takes to win. He is a solid shooter to 19 feet but rarely forces anything. Jones is a talent with a great future. His game is similar to that of Jason Kidd at this early stage.

Tyus Jones Making A National Name For Himself Basketball Recruiting
by Chris Monter May 24, 2011

Tyus JonesTyus Jones, a 6-foot-1 freshman point guard from Apple Valley (MN) High, is receiving plenty of national attention after a strong spring with the Howard Pulley AAU program. Jones will play this weekend in Los Angeles this weekend in the final EYBL event and will travel to Colorado Springs next month for the U.S. 16-and-under national team tryouts. GopherHole.com recently caught up with Jones to talk about his AAU season and playing for Team USA.

Jones averaged 18.8 points and eight assists per game as a freshman, leading Apple Valley to a 19-10 mark this season, losing to Lakeville South 74-58 in the Class AAAA, Section 3 finals. He missed 13 games with a lacerated kidney that he suffered in the season opener against St. Louis Park. Jones scored 19 points and dished 11 assists in the game, but he took a fall late in the game and suffered the injury.

Joines made a name for himself locally as an eighth grade starter for the Eagles. Jones expanded his reputation to a national level after playing well at several national AAU events and traveling to Colorado Springs as 31 of the nation's top 14 and 15 year old players competed in the USA Basketball Developmental National Team mini-camp at the U.S. Olympic Training Center last October.

Jones was considered one of the top players there and has a good chance of making the U.S. 16-and-under national team next summer.

Jones averaged 16.5 points per game and leads the Metro area in assists as an eighth grader. Jones scored in double figures in 21 of 28 games as the Eagles finished 20-8, losing to Eastview 78-66 in the Class 4A, Section 3 semifinals.

Jones has attracted the attention of several top programs, including the Golden Gophers.

GopherHole.com recently caught up with Jones to talk about his AAU season and playing for Team USA.

GH: You have had back-to-back weekends off, yet I have seen you at basketball tournament the past two weekends. What do you during your time off? Do you get to rest a little bit?

?I am resting, definitely. I am still at the gyms watching tournaments and see a couple of buddies play. I am resting and icing and getting ready for this weekend out in L.A.?

GH: When you are watching games at tournaments, are you watching more to watch your buddies or are you trying to pick up some things?

?I definitely try to relax and watch my buddies play, but I try to see some little things that they do and other players do that can help my game, but I am definitely trying to watch and cheer my guys on.?

USA U16 national team

Tyus Jones (Apple Valley, Minn./Apple Valley)
2014, PG, 6-0, 171 pounds
Jones is a very unselfish point guard who makes teammates better with his excellent passing and court vision. He can run the team and make open shots with range to the arc when set. Jones can penetrate and makes good decisions coming off on-ball screens, but must finish better. He does a good job of reading the help defender and finding the open man. Jones also plays with urgency and just seems to take what the defense gives him and excel at it. Schools like Minnesota, Iowa, Ohio State, Michigan State, North Carolina and Arizona are in the hunt for his services.

Tyus Jones stands out at his position

With a weak crop of point guards in 2012 and the best 2013 ones not in attendance at Peach Jam, many onlookers have been highly impressed with the play of rising sophomore Tyus Jones.

One person even said he might be better now than any point guard in the class of 2012.

?I?ve been playing well,? Jones said. ?I haven?t been trying to do too much.?

The 6-footer from Apple Valley (Minn.) controls tempo very effectively and knows how to find teammates on the run. Jones attacks the basket and can finish, while also showing an ability to knock down outside shots.

Although it?s early, Jones has offers from Iowa and Baylor, with interest coming from Minnesota, Michigan State, Ohio State, Arizona, North Carolina, Notre Dame and Florida.

Tyus Jones: Close encounters of the Coach K kind

Apple Valley's Tyus Jones got the attention of many of college basketball's top coaches with his play at the Peach Jam tourney.

Tyus Jones (5) received six more Division I scholarship offers, including two from Big Ten schools, after his performance last week at an AAU tournament in North Augusta, S.C.

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. - The middle-aged men in khaki shorts and polo shirts with team logos -- Thad Matta, Tom Izzo and Jim Boeheim among them -- whispered to one another whenever 15-year-old Tyus Jones whipped a pass across the court or zipped by a defender.

They proved to be more than casual admirers.

In the days after last week's Peach Jam AAU tournament -- in which Jones scored 31 points in a critical game and accumulated assists throughout the four-day event -- he received scholarship offers from Ohio State, Michigan State, Marquette, Providence, Arizona and Iowa State, adding to earlier tenders from Iowa, Minnesota and Baylor. Humbling, he said, but a phone call with Duke's Mike Krzyzewski floored him.

Tyus Jones Attracts A Crowd At Open Gym Basketball Recruiting
by Chris Monter September 28, 2011

Local high school teams should be even more nervous when they face Apple Valley this year. Tyus Jones, a 6-foot-2 sophomore point guard, has grown another inch and now is dunking the basketball with ease. GopherHole.com watched Jones play at Lakeville South in a fall league Saturday morning and Sunday night at an open gym at Apple Valley High along with four high major college assistant coaches. GopherHole.com caught up with Jones to learn the latest on his recruitment.

Jones, who helped lead the USA team to the gold medal at the FIBA Americas Under-16 Championship in Cancun, Mexico in June, made a name for himself locally as an eighth-grade starter. Jones averaged 16.5 points per game two seasons ago and lead the Metro area in assists as an eighth grader. Jones scored in double figures in 21 of 28 games, and the Eagles finished 20-8.

During his freshman season this past winter, he averaged 18.8 points and eight assists per game for the team?which went 19-10?despite missing 13 games with a lacerated kidney that he suffered in the season opener against St. Louis Park.

Jones has attracted the attention of many of the top basketball programs in the country, including the University of Minnesota.

Gopher assistant coach Vince Taylor was at Apple Valley last week along with Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo. Arizona associate head coach James Whitford, Providence assistant Bob Simon, Iowa assistant Andrew Francis and Duke assistant Jeff Capel were in attendance at the open gym Sunday.
GH: You were at the Minnesota football game against New Mexico State. I had heard that you might go to Michigan State for Midnight Madness or haven?t you decided?

Tyus Jones: I think that I am going to be in Colorado Springs, actually (for the USA tryouts). I was talking to Michigan State and Ohio State as well as Duke about going for Midnight Madness, but I think that all can?t happen, because I I have to go to the USA tryouts, so I don?t think that I can make it to any college things.

Are Gophers in the picture for big-time recruit Tyus Jones?
Posted by: Amelia Rayno under College basketball Updated: October 26, 2011

Naturally, the local D-I school has had its eyes on Jones for some time. But Minnesota is just one of many elite schools whose interest he?s attracted ? and apparently one that for now has not made his top-end list.

Jones seems intent on going to the same college as friend and fellow recruit Jahlil Okafor, a 6-10 center from Chicago. In an interview with C2C Hoops, Jones lists four schools he and Okafor are seriously considering: Arizona, Michigan State, Ohio State and Duke. He mentions that Minnesota ?of course? has been heavily recruiting him but he doesn?t seem too interested in the school. A lot can happen, of course, between now and 2014.

Notes on Jones:

The 6-1, 171-pound point guard plays traveling basketball with Howard Pulley.

Played in the FIBA Americas U16 championship for men in Mexico and had 28 assists in the tournament; his team won the gold medal.

Competed in the Peach Jam tournament in North Augusta, S.C., and wowed D-I coaches like Michigan State's Tom Izzo, Duke's Mike Krzyzewski and Syracuse's Jim Boeheim; had a 31-point game.
Scored 18.3 ppg in 13 games during his freshman season at Apple Valley High School.
Has received offers from Minnesota, Arizona, Iowa State, Michigan State, Ohio State, Baylor and Marquette.
According to ESPN scouting, Jones has a great basketball IQ and is described as a very mature player who makes the right play at the right time, whether it is a pass, rebound, basket or a steal. He is a pass-first point guard but can score when necessary.

A Tyus Jones update
Posted by: Amelia Rayno under Basketball Updated: December 9, 2011

With his sophomore season just underway, the excitement surrounding recruit Tyus Jones is heating up all over again. Tuesday?s at the Apple Valley star guard's season opener against Eden Prairie -- during which he scored 37 points -- Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo and Ohio State assistant Jeff Boals were in the crowd, among others. I caught up with Debbie Jones, Tyus? mother, to chat about the reignited hubbub.

Q Have you guys called a lot of schools already?
A We have spoken to a number of colleges. Minnesota, Michigan State, Ohio State, Duke, Arizona, Baylor, Iowa, Iowa State, Providence. I think that?s it.

Q So who is on the list right now?
A I don?t think he really has a list per se, all of the places that have contacted him we?ve looked at, checked out, talked with them and did some looking online. But I don?t think he has a list just yet. He probably had his favorites ? but I couldn?t even give you what that list is. He?s gotten a lot of mail that comes into the high school for him from a lot other schools, your Florida, your Kansas, your Marquette, Stanford and a lot of those types of schools, but we haven?t spoken with any of them directly yet.

Q What?s going to factor into the final decision?
A I really think you?ve got to take absolutely everything into consideration. You look at the school, you look at the program, the coaching staff, the university as a whole, the system they run, the academics. I mean, I just think you have to take the whole entire system into play. Because all these big universities, they?re going to have a lot of similar things as far as academically, set up for kids and programs and things like that. So I wouldn?t say there is just one or two things, you really just have to take the situation as a whole and really look into things. And that?s why it?s so time-consuming.

Apple Valley's Jones has attention of colleges
Tyler Mason

Apple Valley High School sophomore Tyus Jones hasn't done much thinking yet about where he'll play college basketball, but he has no shortage of options. (Tyler Mason-FS North)

APPLE VALLEY, Minn. ? By his own account, Tyus Jones is just like any other high school sophomore. He enjoys hanging out with friends, playing video games and staying active on social media.

"Just normal kid stuff," Jones said.

On the basketball court, however, the 15-year-old is anything but a normal kid. The Apple Valley High School point guard is, in some ways, a man among boys. He's started on the Eagles' varsity team since he was an eighth grader. As a sophomore, he's already one of Apple Valley's team captains ? a sign of his leadership despite his young age.

And when the Eagles hit the road, opposing gyms are filled to the brim, with many people there just to see what Jones can do.

"The thing is, when people come see him, then they come back again," said Apple Valley head coach Zach Goring. "They're not just coming out once saying, 'Ah, he's not really that good.' He's legit and he's fun to watch."

Apple Valley's Jones has talent, poise beyond his years

Article by: CHIP SCOGGINS , Star Tribune
Updated: January 16, 2012

This kid is only a sophomore?

That question kept coming to mind Friday night as Apple Valley's Tyus Jones put on a point guard clinic in a 91-84 loss to crosstown rival Eastview, the state's top-ranked team.

Jones dazzled with dribble drives, pinpoint passing and pull-up jumpers. He executed the pick-and-roll perfectly and got his shot any time he wanted.

Jones didn't disappoint the largest crowd ever for an Apple Valley home game (school doors were closed at halftime of the junior varsity game, and some fans had to sit on the floor). His final stat line: 39 points, 11 assists, one turnover, five rebounds, three steals, two blocked shots. He made all 10 free throws he shot.

"Pretty good for a point guard," Apple Valley coach Zach Goring said with a smile.

And only a sophomore. That's the amazing part.

This is not some grand revelation, of course. Jones became a varsity starter in eighth grade and now carries a national profile.

He is rated the top point guard nationally in the Class of 2014 and No. 5 sophomore prospect overall by ESPN. He has a growing list of scholarship offers, including the Gophers, Ohio State, Michigan State, Arizona, Baylor and Marquette.

Apple Valley basketball player Tyus Jones talks, Bob Sansevere listens
Pioneer Press
Updated: 01/16/2012
09:56:49 AM CST

I've been friends with a lot of my (Apple Valley) teammates since I was in kindergarten or younger.

I'm not going anywhere. A lot of people put Hopkins in the category that they recruit. My older brother (Jadee) graduated from Hopkins, so we know coach (Ken) Novak (Jr.) and the whole coaching staff there really well. They don't recruit, to be honest. They do not recruit. The players who transfer there, that's on their own. The coaches do not go out and look for players. I do plan on being here (at Apple Valley High School). I'm not transferring to Hopkins. A lot of people have asked me that.

I'm a very blessed child. I've been very blessed with a great talent. I've had a lot of experiences that a lot of kids my age don't have. I've had a blessed life.

When I really realized I was blessed was last year. First game of the season, I lacerated my kidney. I was pushed, and I fell into the back of a kid's leg, and I landed on his heel. I thought I broke a rib because I couldn't breathe. It turned out to be a lacerated kidney. I was out for eight weeks. I went to the emergency room at midnight, and I was in the hospital for two days. I knew after that, after I was able to bounce back, I knew I was blessed because a lot of tragic stuff is happening out there.

I'm not being cocky, but I don't like to admit people are better than me. I don't really look at it that way - that they're better than me or I'm better than them. If someone outplayed me in a game, I'll give them credit.

It's not necessarily about being the best player. It's about being the best you can be and doing what you're supposed to be doing to the best of your ability. I have a big role on this Apple Valley team, so I have to work hard every day to make sure I can fulfill that role because I know people are depending on me. For the USA team, I'm more of a distributor, more of a facilitator. So it's not about being the best overall player. It's about being the best you can be.

I'm just a normal human being. Just a 15-year-old. Athletes get put in a certain category, especially the higher-named athletes. A lot of people think they're cocky. I'm not like that. I'm a humble, laid-back kid. I'm quiet and like to do the normal things - hang out with my friends, play video games.

I was in preschool, YMCA ball, when I first started playing basketball. I've had a ball in my hands ever since I can remember. There are baby pictures of me with a ball in my hands. I was born into a basketball family. Both my mother and father played in college. My brother played in college. Both sides of my family, aunts and uncles, played in college. It's expected.
