'14 MN PG Tyus Jones (Duke Signee)

Gophers-Tubby Smith situation will be a factor for Tyus Jones

Tyus Jones will be able to look into the stands during this weekend's AAU basketball tournament at High Performance Academy in Eagan and see former NCAA championship coaches such as Duke's Mike Krzyzewski, Michigan State's Tom Izzo and Minnesota's Tubby Smith.

Of course, Apple Valley's star sophomore point guard wants to put on a show for them. But Jones also wonders if Smith still will be with the Gophers when he enters college.

Smith's name was linked again this offseason to other job openings, even though he's negotiating an extension. He continues to say he expects a new contract once a new athletics director is hired. Smith's current contract ends a year before Jones would be a college freshman.

"I definitely take that into consideration," said Jones, who will play for Howard Pulley in the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League starting Friday, April 20. "With me still having a (couple) years left in high school, I definitely look at it if certain coaches will still be there, still have the same job or retire. But I know I can't control it."

Jones has scholarship offers from Minnesota, Duke, Ohio State and Michigan State, among others. He has not set a deadline to make his decision, but this will be an important summer because Jones is establishing a bond with certain coaches and programs - although he wouldn't talk about his favorites.

"It's too early to have a favorite or be ready to make a commitment," he said. "But it's different this year with teams
because I have a better relationship with the coach, since I've been talking to them and know them more personally now than before."

Jones says his recruitment is very much open at this point, although Duke, Michigan State, Ohio State and Minnesota appear to be at the forefront. Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski, Michigan State's Tom Izzo, Minnesota's Tubby Smith and assistants from Ohio State have all checked in to see him this weekend.

"I haven't really made a list," Jones said. "All the schools that have offered I'm open to."

Basketball Recruiting: UNC offers Tyus Jones
Aug 4th, 2012
by Joe Soriano

In the 2014 recruiting class, the consensus best point guard in the nation is a recruit from Apple Valley, Minnesota named Tyus Jones. Not only is he the best PG in the nation, but he?s also the fourth best recruit overall and the second best recruit in the Midwest region behind a Chicago center named Jahlil Okafor.

The prized point guard recruit was offered yesterday by the UNC Tar Heels, and Matt Hamm of Keeping It Heel wrote that Tyus Jones reminds him of San Antonio Spurs star point guard Tony Parker due to his consistency, intelligence, and leadership.

Arizona, Baylor, Duke, Indiana, Iowa, Iowa State, Kentucky, Marquette, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio State,Michigan State, and Providence have all offered the consensus top five 2014 recruit. UCLA, Washington State, Clemson, Washington, Pittsburgh, Florida State, and Florida have also shown interest in the Apple Valley High standout.

The 6?1″, 171 pound prospect is the prize in Minnesota, but it is doubtful that the in-state school will be able to snag Jones given the high profile offers he has received. UNC, Duke, and Kentucky are just three storied programs to toss their names in, as OSU, Arizona, and Indiana are also elite programs that should be heavily in the mix.

Tyus Jones Considering Duke, Carolina, Kentucky Visits
By Adam Zagoria on September 04, 2012

Tyus Jones, the No. 1 point guard in the Class of 2014 out of Apple Valley (Minn.), is considering taking several unofficial visits in October, but no dates are yet set, his father told SNY.tv Tuesday.

Jones is interested in visiting both Duke and North Carolina during a swing to that state.

?I know Tyus is intersted in going to the Midnight Madness at Cameron,? Robert Jones said.

And a Carolina visit could also be a part of that trip.

?I think if he?s in that area it would probably be wise,? his dad said.

As for Kentucky, a visit could happen but, again, no date is set.

?Nothing?s definite right now,? Robert said. ?Duke?s not even definite.?

Jones visited Ohio State and Michigan State prior to the Peach Jam and also recently visited Baylor.

?He looked at Michigan State and Ohio State and we just went down to Baylor this past weekend on an unofficial,? Robert said. ?I think he liked them. He?s had rapport with the coaches, so I think he liked them. I think he liked Baylor as well.?

JONES ON JONES

Describe yourself.

"I'm a genuine guy, an overall good guy. I'm well-mannered and respectful. I think people will say I'm kind. I treat others how I would like them to treat me."

What do you like or dislike about high school?

"I like high school. You're able to make friends and connect with people. It's a great learning experience. That's something every kid needs. As for dislikes, it's hard with the classes and homework. Some people get stressed from high school, but I think it's a really good experience."

What do you do besides play basketball?

"I'm a big Xbox player. I also like to hang out with friends. I'm not a kid who goes out a lot. I'm more laid back."

How are you doing academically?

"I have a 3.2 GPA."

What interests you academically?

"I really like history. That's my favorite subject. I like going back in time to learn about our past. I've enjoyed learning about black history. That's caught my attention."

What's

the No. 1 thing you want from a college?

"It's hard to single one thing out. It might be comfort. You want to feel at home, feel comfortable with teammates and coaches, on and off the court. You don't want to be in a place where you aren't comfortable. If you're in that situation, you won't succeed academically, athletically and socially. The education part is critical, too."

Pretty impressive that, when asked to describe himself, says early on, "I think people will say I'm kind." At the very least, it shows he values kindness very highly.

Not nearly enough of that today. Good luck to the young man, who seems like a quality kid. Wherever he decides to play his single year of collegiate hoop. :)

Tyus Jones (Apple Valley High/Apple Valley, Minn.) is not only one of the top guards, but he?s one of the top players in the Class of 2014. The 6-foot-1 point guard that has captivated the state of Minnesota has provided the seven schools remaining in his recruitment in an interview with CBS Minnesota on Friday night.

Jones, in an interview with Mike Max of Minnesota.CBSLocal.com, stated that ?Baylor, Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, Michigan State, Minnesota, and Ohio State are among the finalists for his services.

?Tyus is a kid that can lead first and foremost,? Apple Valley head coach Zach Goring told CBS Minnesota. ?A tremendous basketball player, but a really good kid, too.?

While he?s still one of the highly-touted recruits, Jones and his Apple Valley Eagles are still in the hunt for a Minnesota state title. On Saturday, they take on Cretin-Derham Hall in the sectional semifinals.

Tyus Jones isn't the basketball player he wants to be. Not yet.

Rated the Class of 2014's No. 2 recruit nationally, Jones spent his junior season at Apple Valley High School working on every part of his game, making sure he remains the best of the best among college recruits. When it comes to his game, he's thinking long term. He knows where he wants to be, and what he has to do to get there.

"I'm not at the top level," Jones said last week. "That top level is LeBron James, Kobe Bryant and Dwyane Wade. Even those guys aren't content. They're always striving to improve. I can't rest on what I've done. You can't be a junior in high school and say I've got nothing to improve on."

If Thad can get Jones and Okafor to add to the 2014 class, it will be his best class at Ohio State.

... which is definitely saying something.

Imagine that roster for a minute.

Now, I do think the roster would be better from a size/athleticism standpoint in certain spots due to the returning players being of higher quality, but I think Oden/Conley was a lot better duo than Jones/Okafor. Still think the '07 class will be his best, but '14 could be close to that.
