CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. ? Indiana University, the University of Louisville and the University of Kentucky have all entered the recruiting fray for Myles Turner, whose breakout weekend at the NBPA Top 100 camp could make him one of the nation?s most sought-after big men in the Class of 2014.

?I?m really enjoying it,? said Turner, a 6-foot-11, 220-pound center from Euless, Texas, who missed all of last summer with a broken ankle. ?I can?t say I didn?t see it coming off a pretty good high school year, as far as stats. It?s just been a real great experience.?

He said the strongest parts of his game are ?outworking my opponent and defending the rim.?

Turner has had an IU offer for two months. He said U of L extended an offer two weeks ago, and Kentucky began contacting him last week, but hasn?t made an offer.

Turner, who has family in Indiana, said he watched IU on television several times last season and liked what he saw.

?I really like the way Cody Zeller was moving,? Turner said. ?A player like that in that system, I could see where you could thrive. I could see myself in that position as well.?

Myles Turner elevates play at NBPA Top 100 Camp
Scott Phillips
Jun 15, 2013,

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Myles Turner might not realize it quite yet, but the next few months he’s going to be a marked man among college coaches and his fellow players.

That’s because Turner — currently rated as the No. 78 in Rivals’ 2014 national class — is rapidly ascending up the national rankings as phrases like, “top-ten prospect” and “best overall prospect in attendance” were thrown around by some when his name was brought up at the NBPA Top 100 Camp on the campus of the University of Virginia is Charlottesville, Virginia.

At 6-11, the Texas-native possesses a unique skill level for a player his height. Turner can block shots and play on the interior using his advanced footwork, but he’s also just as comfortable stepping out and taking jumpers beyond the three-point line.

There’s a gigantic difference between “can make a three-pointer” and “will make a three-pointer” and Turner’s shooting ability puts him closer to the later than the former among those distinctions.

“My only weakness is my strength overall, but other than that, I don’t feel I have many weaknesses,” Turner told NBC Sports. “Strengths: I feel like I can shoot it and my footwork (is a strength) because I’m able to get around most guys.”

The shooting ability makes Turner unique — he even classifies himself as more of a “stretch four” than a center — but it’s his natural ease in communicating with coaches, teammates — and even the media — that makes him potentially special. Myles may have been the hot name at the Top 100 Camp, but you wouldn’t know it by talking to him and getting his perspective on things.

“It’s the best competition in the United States and it’s great. There’s nothing more I can ask for,” Turner said of the Top 100 Camp. “I’m going to do whatever my coach tells me to do. I’m not a selfish player — never have been — and I’m always going to be a team player. I really don’t have an ego towards this.”

This type of attitude coupled with Turner’s ability and upside has made him an attractive prospect among college coaches as most of the Big 12 is hot on his heels and the national recruiting is beginning to turn up as well.

“I’ll cut my list to 10 schools by the end of next month and the end of the (July) recruiting period,” Turner said of his recruitment. ”Distance is not a factor — it can be Oregon, St. John’s, anything — but distance isn’t really a factor for me. Anywhere I feel I can really be developed and go to the NBA and have that great family structure and try to win a championship; that’s where my heart is going to be.”

Recently, Turner has a new offer and has some potential unofficial visits in mind for the upcoming future as he continues to sort through his recruitment.

“The newest offer has been Arizona; I’d like to take an unofficial there this summer,” Turner said. “Anytime I can get a break I’d like to do that. I think I want to get back up to Oklahoma State University as well.”

Whenever you hear the phrase “national recruiting” — almost inevitably — Kentucky will be brought up and Turner said that the Wildcats have shown preliminary interest recently as well.

“My Dad just talked to Coach Calipari last week,” Turner said. “They’re going to step up their recruiting process and we’re looking to see this July coming up.”

But for now, recruiting can wait, as Turner just soaks in the camp circuit and prepares to be seen by the college coaches in July.

“I really get to see where I stand with everybody (playing events like this),” Turner said. “I’ve played in a couple of tournaments and not really seen the best competition at times, but now I can see everybody and it just shows me where I am.”

Where Myles Turner is now and where Myles Turner will be by the end of July will be one of the most fascinating recruiting subplots during next month’s July live evaluation period.

Notebook: Myles Turner continues ascent into top 10 nationally

Myles Turner has established himself as one of the top players in 2014 in a short time. (Under Armour/Kelly Kline) Myles Turner has established himself as one of the top players in 2014 in a short time. (Under Armour/Kelly Kline)

By all accounts, Myles Turner had his breakout event at the Under Armour Invitational in Dallas back in May. The 7-foot Trinity (Texas) product has suddenly burst onto the scene as a potential five-star prospect.

If that's the case, his performance at NBPA Top 100 camp was one heck of a second act.

Turner was named to the camp's all-star team, averaging 12.4 points and 4.8 rebounds. He was one of the most impressive players at the event, dominating on the defensive end of the floor on a consistent basis. He is also an adept offensive player from a face-up perspective, knocking down perimeter and mid-range shots with effectiveness.

He has skyrocketed to No. 12 in the 247 Sports ranking, and that number could be too low.

?Last summer, I was more of a -- I don't want to say weaker link -- but I was not the strongest kid on the floor,? Turner said. ?So I didn't get the ball much. I wasn't able to make my moves as fluid.?

Since the camp ended, Kentucky coach John Calipari reached out, and Turner planned an unofficial visit to SMU.

Ohio State, Arizona and Louisville all recently offered, joining a list that includes Kansas State, Kansas, Texas, Baylor, Texas A&M, UCLA, Oregon, Oregon State, Miami, Oklahoma State and others.

?I'm definitely making my moves much stronger now, more aggressive, and improving parts of my game,? Turner said. ?And, of course, more people are seeing me now.?

Expect that number to increase as well.

He seems like an Ohio State basketball type of recruit, honestly. Thad Matta has done a tremendous job recruiting not only top-notch athletes, but also high quality kids. Turner is well-spoken, humble, and seems to be a definite team first kind of kid. He'd fit in perfectly at Ohio State both with his style of play, but also with his attitude and demeanor. Here's hoping the OSU program piques his interest and he gives the Buckeyes a legitimate shot to land his signature.

Breakout hoops star Myles Turner rises to No. 5 in 247Sports 2014 rankings
Now completely recovered from surgery on broken foot over a year ago, Trinity (Euless, Texas) big man making most of showcase opportunities.

Trinity High School (Euless, Texas) is best known for its powerhouse football program, which helped bring the fearsome Haka dance into popularity and won state titles in 2005, 2007 and 2009.

But the Trojan gridiron gang isn't the only attraction at Trinity these days.

Rising senior hoops star Myles Turner, a skilled 6-foot-11 center, was installed Wednesday as the No. 5 overall prospect in the Class of 2014 by 247Sports.com.

"He is special, no doubt about that," Trinity head coach Mark Villines said.

After breaking his foot and needing surgery last spring, the opportunity to showcase himself and gain exposure during the summer of 2012 was a complete lost cause for Turner. Forget five-star status, Turner wasn't even on the radar of most basketball scouts and analysts.
Turner attacks the bucket during a December game against Nolan Catholic of Fort Worth.

Turner wasn't cleared to play until the start of his junior campaign at Trinity. He posted averages of around 14 points, nine rebounds and six blocked shots per game while leading the Trojans to a rare playoff appearance.

Following the high school season, Turner's stock rose quickly on the Under Armour club circuit with Texas Select. He cemented his status as an elite prospect by making a major impression at last week's NBPA Top 100 Camp in Virginia.

"Defensively he's so long and now that he's growing into his body and getting stronger, he's just a huge presence in the paint," Villines said. "There are not many big guys that can step out and shoot it like he can. He shot 40 percent from the 3-point line last season and 70 percent from the free throw line. You don't get 6-11 and 225 pounds that can play like that very often."

College programs like Baylor, Connecticut, Kansas, Ohio State, Texas and UCLA have extended offers, while Duke and Kentucky are among those showing serious interest.

Myles Turner Trims List to 26, Another Cut Coming (UPDATED)
July 3rd, 2013

91e353cfeaa38466dd76008b760c87b1.jpeg

As reported here earlier this week, 6-foot-11 Dallas big man Myles Turner has trimmed his list to 26 and plans to cut it again at the end of the month.

?I have trimmed my college list from 60 to 25. They will be released soon. I want to extend my thanks to every school that has recruited me!? he Tweeted.

?I will release my top 10-12 schools at the end of this month!?

According to Reggie Rankin, Turner is now considering the following schools: Arizona, Arkansas, Baylor, Connecticut, Duke, Georgetown, Indiana, Kansas, Kansas State, Kentucky, Louisville, Marquette, Miami (FL), North Carolina, N.C. State, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Oregon, SMU, Stanford, Texas, Texas A&M, UT-Arlington, UCLA and UNLV.

?I?m still doing research on all these schools,? Myles said Wednesday by phone on his way to an unofficial visit at UT-Arlington.

He heads to the LeBron James Skills Academy in Las Vegas on Friday, and then to the Reebok Breakout Challenge in Philadelphia next week.

Kentucky, Louisville, Duke, North Carolina and Georgetown are some of the newer programs to call since the 6-foot-11 Turner exploded onto the scene at the NBPA Top Camp and then followed it up by starring earlier this week at the Nike Skills Academy at Kean University.

In addition to all the big dogs coming in recently, David Turner, Myles? father, said Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Houston, Arkansas, Arizona, Texas A&M and even UT-Arlington (the first to offer) had been in the mix for some time now.

?His mom and I would love him to stay local,? said David. ?I?m very proud of Myles. He hasn?t settled for anything.

All the blocks and dunks are what you'd expect from a big man's mixtape. The shot off the dribble is what I was not expecting...
Not to mention the fadeaway's, baby hooks and other variety of jump shots. I wonder what UT-Arlington has that made him select them. I guess maybe I should go out and look and see who their coach is and their style of play.
