What I love most is that he is an attacking guard, I love shooters but boy do I miss having someone other than our power forward, who can't shoot free throws attacking the rim for possible trips to the line... Me like lots!

i looked for some shooting percentages for watson. i couldn't find any. however, i did see that he made 18-of-21 free throws one game.

That is something we've rarely had here, Russell, Lighty and Evan Turner are the main players that come to mind so it has been very few far in between... but hopefully Holtmann will emphasize this in recruiting guards to play here because you need to be able to do this in the tournament instead of relying on jump shooting too much when the body is tired and wearing down.

Are you saying Lighty was a good FT shooter? He was a career 63% at the line! Ideally, you want your guards at least 75% or better, which is right where Russell and ET were.

of all the shooting guards i've seen, watson is the one i want the most. goodwin is very good and a local committing to osu would be good for the program, but watson's playmaking and ballhandling abilities are at least one notch above goodwin's. a pure point guard and watson in the '18 class should satisfy the backcourt needs. a pure point guard and goodwin may, as well; however, goodwin doesn't project as a combo guard who will exploit offenses off the dribble or provide adequate ballhandling relief. according to watson's coach, torrence is working toward being a combo guard. goodwin, on the other hand, i think will remain in the shooting guard position. if either player were a couple inches taller, i think holtmann would take a commitment from both. as it is, though, i foresee holt taking only one 6'4"ish shooting/combo guard.

I like your analysis, however since Dane appears more adept at playing off the ball compared to the other guards like Watson, combined with the lack of SGs on the team, I don't necessarily view them as an either-or.

I can't see how they can't take 3 guards in '18 barring Ayala coming in. CJ Jackson is currently the only guard in '18.

No Ayala.. and I think they go something like this for '18

    PG
    Combo
    SG
    Hunter
Big who can play PF and C

yeah, i was even debating/disagreeing with myself when i submitted the recent post. if holt goes to a 5-person class, two 6'4"-6'6" shooting guards/forwards make sense. in a 4-person class, i don't see it, though... unless ayala commits to osu for '17. a true point guard is a necessity. a combo guard/forward will obviously be in the class. a 6'7"-6'9" forward of some sort (like hunter) will be in the class. finally, funderburk's departure especially makes a 4/5 a necessity. therefore, a fifth commitment as a second shooting guard/forward appears to fit. i just want for one of them to be a little taller than 6'4". or at least have a long wingspan like lenzelle had (6'9"), which eric hunter seems to have. ideally, one of the two shooting guards/forwards would by lighty-esque. jallow also fits here. ahrens sorta kinda does, too, but i think that ship has sailed for both sides.

that makes complete sense. with ayala, i could see this:

    cg/sg
    sg/sf
    hunter
    pf/c

well, with goodwin no longer a target, i really hope that holt somehow lands watson. even when i expected goodwin to reaffirm to osu, i thought watson was the better prospect.
