'18 OH SG Dane Goodwin (Ohio St. Decommit, Notre Dame Verbal)

IMO, Matta was too interested in recruiting particular skills to the detriment of getting strong all-around players, and the teams he put together kept getting worse and worse as the amount of specialization of the players increased and the well-roundedness of the team decreased.

I see why Matta loved Dane, he is a superior shooter and fit into Matta's plan because he wanted someone who is tops in his class with that particular skill. But I think you're right in the sense that Coach Holt does have different talent priorities, different strategies, and he was not hellbent on getting "a shooter" so he did not see Dane as quite the premium value player as Matta did. I think it's most appropriate to allow Coach Holt some leeway to find his guys here and not be negative towards Dane or Coach Holt.

Agreed. He would have been gone a long time ago if he wanted to avoid being part of a rebuild project.

He knew how Matta was going to use him. A new coach comes in with a different system and maybe a different vision for how he would be used, so now he's weighing his options.

I will be interested in seeing who Holt's "guys" are in the future, if we are to believe that Goodwin wasn't highly valued. I don't know if Goodwin was destined to break Diebler's three-ball records at Ohio State, but I have a hard time believing a coach couldn't see the value he brings to a team that will have one guard on the entire roster in two years.

Goodwin isn't just a superior shooter; he averaged double-digit rebounds as a junior, something I've always valued out of SG's. It shows they have grit. He's a coach's son. He's going to be well-rounded, just not at Ohio State.

then again, diebler (a coach's son) averaged 13 rebounds, 7 assists, 5 steals, and 4 blocks his senior season in high shool. i absolutely loved diebler and would take him again in less than a heartbeat, but he didn't become a well-rounded player in college. the only role he served at osu was as a spot-up shooter from deep. over 80% of attempts were 3-pointers. diebler wasn't a particularly good playmaker, rebounder, or defender. he did one thing and did it great for three seasons.

i'm not assuming goodwin's path will be the same as diebler's in terms of the roles he'll fulfill. also, i don't at all know if holtmann was doubtful that goodwin would fit the playing style he's looking for. that being stated, i wouldn't be surprised if holtmann did have reservations about a shooting guard who isn't particularly known for his defense and isn't known for his ballhandling. if goodwin were 6'7" like diebler instead of 6'4", perhaps it would be different. as it appears right now, though, goodwin reminds me of kam williams.

Well, Zach, you weren't right on that one.
I have no idea why you specifically mentioned Zach for thinking that Goodwin was not going to the Catholic college in Indiana. There were plenty of guys, including many posters on this board, that thought exactly the same.

It makes me wonder why Dane took the official visit to Ohio State and what might have happened on that visit which really turned him off to Ohio State. You would think that he would have been very familiar with the campus, the basketball facilities and the guys on the team. I just wonder what turned him off. Maybe Holtmann turned him off or maybe he just was informed that they were going in a different direction with regard to their style of play. It certainly would be interesting to get the inside story on this recruitment.

Zach Fleer is a reporter of sorts and he led people to believe ND was out of it when they weren't. So my point is noting his inaccurate reporting of what programs were under consideration. I hold him to a higher standard than random message board posters, because his reporting may help shape opinions of the posters. Maybe it shouldn't. In this case it was a job not very well done by Fleer if he is expected to be some insider about Dane's recruiting. A reason to place less stock in his reports.

Well, you can put this in your pipe and smoke it but shortly after Holt was hired Zack was on a podcast with the guys from Land Grant and he said that Musa Jallow was a player to watch for Ohio State. You should hold yourself to the same standard. Oh, that is right you do not tweet.

I don't think Holtmann had any doubts that Dane would be a good player. But the staff did not have any real existing relationship with Dane and they were unable to "click" with him, so there was some mutuality to the parting.
This does not make much sense because Matta offered both Ahrens and Goodwin and both committed. When Matta was terminated both Goodwin and Ahrens met with Holtmann and whatever transpired in that meeting made Goodwin commit to ND. They did not have an existing relationship with either player so that is a fallacy plus I do not know if there was a mutual parting of the ways. As it turns out as much as I appreciate Ahrens I think Goodwin would have been a better selection by Holtmann if there was indeed a choice.

DANE GOODWIN
DECOMMITTED ON JUNE 21, 2017
An Upper Arlington product, Goodwin made a lot of sense when he committed to Ohio State on Dec. 1, 2014, even though the class of 2018 graduate hadn’t played a single high school basketball game yet. He remained committed to the Buckeyes until Matta got fired in 2017, causing him to reevaluate and ultimately decommit. Despite taking a visit to Ohio State to check out the Holtmann-led program, Goodwin committed to Notre Dame on July 5, 2017.

In two years for the Fighting Irish, Goodwin has shown promise. Coming off the bench both as a freshman and sophomore, his points per game (6.4 to 10.8), assists per game (1.1 to 1.3), rebounds per game (3.2 to 3.8), shooting percentage (37.6 to 43.3) and 3-point percentage (34.3 to 37.7) went up in his second year.
