'19 IN SG Brandon Newman (Purdue Verbal)

he reminds me of a higher upside Kam Williams. great shooter, good athlete, but below average ball skills for a guy who is ostensibly a guard. that said, he is taller and longer than Kam and is a little bit more aggressive about attacking the glass, both for points and rebounds. he's not quite as highly ranked as Kam was coming out of HS but I think that's mostly because Kam had such a proficient shooting/scoring career throughout his time in HS and AAU, whereas Newman's game has kind of started clicking more recently.

Ohio State men’s basketball recruiting | Brandon Newman takes official visit to Purdue
It’s been a busy few weeks for Brandon Newman, and there’s no sign of things slowing down anytime soon.

A four-star shooting guard prospect in the class of 2019, Newman had been squeezing in unofficial visits during the summer before transferring from Valparaiso, Indiana, to Montverde (Florida) Academy for his senior season when plans changed. Not long after getting situated in Florida, a family situation resulted in Newman returning home to finish out high school at Valparaiso instead.

Throughout that, Newman has managed to cut his list of top schools and start scheduling official visits. After announcing a final four of Purdue, Indiana, Ohio State and Xavier on Sunday, Newman finished an official visit to check out the Boilermakers during the weekend.

...

Up next is an official visit to Indiana this weekend, with official visits to Ohio State and Xavier to follow. His visit to check out the Buckeyes is likely to take place during the weekend of Sept. 22.

Ohio State has one spot remaining for its class of 2019. It hosted four-star power forward prospect E.J. Liddell from Belleville (Illinois) West last weekend on an official visit, and although Newman said he keeps tabs on who is visiting where, Liddell’s trip didn’t impact his thoughts on the Buckeyes.

“I went down (to Ohio State) unofficially a couple weeks ago,” he said. “I loved it. It was a really good visit. That’s why I plan to come back again. Just to go off of that, I have a really good relationship with coach (Chris) Holtmann and (assistant) coach (Ryan) Pedon, with coach Pedon being the guy mainly I talk to.”

continued...

if 9/22, would be same weekend as payne's official.

with franklin committing to indiana, i expect that purdue is well in the lead for newman.

Hopefully it means his leader is no longer in contention which could leave the door open for coach Holt. The big ? is would they take his verbal with Liddell's decision still pending? I don't see CH as the type to over-sign. While it is at least 50-50 a player will bail for PT - or maybe even unexpectedly turn pro - before next season, it would be a risk to sign 4 early. It will be very interesting to see what happens between now and 9/24. Will he and Payne make their officials? Will it be in hopes they delay signing until the Spring? Or does CH want ANY of F Liddell, G Newman, or C/PF Payne and would take the first-to-commit and shut it down for the 2019 class?

I kind of lean toward the f-t-c scenario as most likely, as the staff evidently loves Liddell's versatility but possibly have bigger needs for another wing shooter/scorer or another post option for that 13th slot. I think they love Liddell's game and personality but know their bigger needs are for another post(defensive-minded preferably since that end is vulnerable with their current post guys) option or wing(more offensive-minded as Musa and Luther are more defensive types).

Xavier just got a commitment from 4-star 2019 SG Dahmir Bishop, possibly making them a tougher sell for Newman. IU was unofficially eliminated from contention once they got Armaan Franklin.

I think Purdue is the current leader for Newman but OSU is making up ground quickly (still, distance from home might continue to sway this towards the Boilermakers; the roster situations are fairly similar with Purdue having guys like Eastern, Hunter, and Stefanovic as wing guards and OSU having Muhammad and Washington, and then depending on how you want to count Jallow and Ahrens). It would be very interesting to know what kind of a push OSU makes for Newman next weekend. We are probably his last OV and he might make a decision shortly after. Similar story with EJ Liddell visiting Illinois next weekend. OSU the current perceived leader for EJ with Illinois getting to make the last push. Purdue the perceived leader for Newman with OSU getting to make the last push. OSU's top priority being EJ but not putting all their eggs in his basket, and I think Newman has kind of emerged as their top priority this fall after EJ since Newman offers wing scoring, something that is a question mark for the roster. There is definitely a very possible scenario where Liddell commits to Illinois or Mizzou and Newman commits to Purdue or Xavier, but I think OSU is in a decent spot to get one of the two. Our best chance is with Liddell, though, because Newman decided not to attend Montverde in order to be close to home, and Purdue is 3 hours closer to home than OSU is.

If Liddell does make a decision shortly after his visit to Illinois, and it's not OSU, I hope there's enough time for Holtmann to go all-in on Newman (and I'm still not entirely clear whether a [probably unlikely] scenario where Newman wanted to commit to OSU on his visit would be met with the staff telling him to wait). Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think OSU has done an in-home with Newman yet, so maybe that is something that could be arranged quickly after an EJ decision if Newman was still undecided. OTOH, it's very possible that OSU might be pushing for Newman right now and are willing to try to make the class work at 4 if they're so lucky as to have both Newman and Liddell want in (don't think that will happen, though).

I have no idea how that could happen unless one of those guys would sign in the spring and I just do not see that happening. I think they wait on a decision from EJ before they would go all in Newman.

With a couple very plugged-in insiders stating that EJ is becoming an Illinois vs. Mizzou battle due to distance from home, I hope OSU pulls out all the stops for Newman's visit next weekend. I think, for a lot of reasons, this staff really wants to get a third commit and a guy they like in the early signing and then be able to focus on the upcoming season and 2020 recruiting. Newman is, truly, the best remaining candidate for that if the EJ ship is sailing.

Brandon Newman just committed to Purdue.

Wish I could give you guys some winky faces about another recruit but I haven't seen anything like that. Still, the timing feels weird since Newman's OV to OSU was just around the corner. I dunno if Purdue had an in-home or something recently with him and were able to push for that commit and get it.

Really feels like EJ is all or nothing now unless you believe in Nnaji or Payne.
