WHAT ALONZO GAFFNEY'S COMMITMENT MEANS FOR OHIO STATE BASKETBALL

92372_h.jpg

When Chris Holtmann was introduced as Ohio State's next head basketball coach, it was obvious that one of his first orders of business would be recruiting the Buckeye state hard.

"We're going to work extremely hard to close our borders and dominate the state of Ohio in recruiting," Holtmann said at his introductory press conference. "It will be an everyday focus for us."

Holtmann got to work early, piecing together a 2017 class by adding Musa Jallow and Kyle Young to his first Ohio State roster, before putting together a top-25 class in the 2018 cycle. On Tuesday, however, Holtmann added his biggest piece yet.

Alonzo Gaffney, the top player in the state of Ohio in the 2019 class, announced his commitment to Ohio State on Tuesday morning, giving the Buckeyes their signature in-state commitment they had missed out on in recent years.

Gaffney was the second commitment Ohio State picked up in three days, as the Buckeyes landed Florida State transfer CJ Walker on Sunday. Due to transfer rules, Walker will not be eligible to play until 2019-2020, when Gaffney will arrive on campus.

When Gaffney does arrive, he figures to make an immediate impact on the court for Ohio State.

Coach says Gaffney's approach similar to an OSU all-time great

The first weekend for Ohio State basketball commitment Alonzo Gaffney with All-Ohio Red on the Nike EYBL circuit did not go well.

The 6-9 Gaffney and the All-Ohio Red team went 0-4 in that first weekend of play in Dallas April 20-22. That showing did not sit well with Gaffney, not at all.

“He called me this past week and said, ‘Coach, we won’t lose,’ ” All-Ohio Red coach Demarco Bradley said.

Gaffney was almost prophetic. All-Ohio showed up to the second weekend of EYBL play in Indianapolis and went 3-1. The team won its first three games before dropping its finale on Sunday.

...

Through two weekends (eight games), Gaffney has been one of the top performers on the Nike circuit. He is averaging 12.6 points, 6.4 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. He is hitting 81 percent of his free throws (17 of 21) and 48 percent of his three-point tries (20 of 42).

...

Bradley confirmed that Gaffney has been a pleasure to coach in their first month together.

“He talks to all the guys,” Bradley said. “The coaches up at O-State are getting one heck of a student-athlete. He’s the best – on and off the court. He is a great leader.

“He’s one of those players … I tell Zo I haven’t had a player like him, who I have coached, in a long time.”

...

“But the thing I am most impressed with him about is his defense. He just checked Romeo Weems, Trendon Watford for Georgia Stars and another kid from AOT (Isaac Okoro). They average 20-some points, but he holds them down to 10 or 12 points. He is playing really well defensively.”

What I liked: Corey Evans from NBPA Top 100 Wednesday

...Alonzo Gaffney's potential

The talent level and upside is staggering with Alonzo Gaffney. There aren’t many with the length, fluidity, versatility and athleticism of the Ohio State bound forward. He does have to bring greater consistency to the floor but on Wednesday, it was all there. He was vocal on both ends, defended three positions, knocked down catch and shoot jumpers and finished with authority in the lane. Keita Bates-Diop is out the door this spring and while it will be a one year hiatus in Columbus from someone in his mold, Gaffney could be the ideal replacement a year from now as Chris Holtmann has a good one coming his way.

Ohio State men’s basketball: Alonzo Gaffney transfer is official
Alonzo Gaffney’s transfer from Garfield Heights, Ohio, to Brewster Academy in New Hampshire for his senior season has been finalized, his father Kevin Gaffney told The Dispatch.

...

“I just felt that being in the big city, along with getting all this exposure that he needed to go somewhere where he could really focus both academically and on the basketball court,” Kevin Gaffney said. “I had just heard such great things about them, so I reached out to them and they were familiar with Alonzo. I thought that it would be a great opportunity for him, especially for his last year, to try and get his body right. It’s a boarding school and they’re really big on weight lifting and nutrition and stuff like that there.”

...

“My thing with coach Holtmann is that you’ll have my son the next four years if he’s there for four years,” he said. “This was a decision that me and Alonzo and his mom thought about. We thought about it last year, but we weren’t comfortable with the schools we were looking at. This year is going to fly by and before you know it you’re driving two hours down to Columbus. This may just help him out tremendously. It’s going to be like in practice: you can’t take a day off. He’s going to be competitive at practice and they play in big-time tournaments where the level of competition is a lot higher.”
