KYLE YOUNG'S HIGH ANKLE SPRAIN WILL KEEP HIM OUT AS OHIO STATE BATTLES MICHIGAN STATE TODAY

112648_h.jpg

Chris Holtmann confirmed starting power forward Kyle Young will not be able to play today in East Lansing against Michigan State.

Young suffered the injury back on February 23 in the first half of Ohio State's win over then No. 7 Maryland. Since the injury, he's been in a walking boot and listed as day-to-day.

The assumption is Alonzo Gaffney will also continue to be unavailable, as is point guard DJ Carton, forcing the Buckeyes to play with a short bench.

So far, so good for the depleted Buckeyes however, as they've won four in a row and six of the last seven including back-to-back wins over ranked Michigan and Illinois squads.

Ohio State's battle against the No. 16 Spartans, comes on Senior Day for Tom Izzo's squad and will be televised at 4:30 p.m. on CBS.

CAN OHIO STATE WIN AWAY FROM HOME?: THE LINGERING QUESTION THAT REMAINS WITHOUT AN ANSWER

112629_h.jpg

The flipping of calendars from January to February is about to become an annual holiday in the Chris Holtmann household.

A year ago, the Buckeyes won their first three games of February after going 1-6 in the first month of the year. This season, they experienced another turnaround, except it was even more remarkable. Ohio State again scuffled to a 2-5 record in January, only to go 8-2 in the next 10 games.

Holtmann, in his nine years as a head coach, admitted after his team beat Michigan that he hasn’t seen anything like it.

“I don't think I've been a part of one this significant where you've seen such a dramatic turnaround,” Holtmann said a week ago.

The gravity of the change in fortune couldn’t possibly be disputed. Ohio State went from a sinking ship headed toward the bottom of the proverbial Big Ten ocean, putting it dangerously close to Northwestern and Nebraska in the conference standings a little over a month ago, to having a 9-2 record in its past 11 games and moving firmly back inside the top 25.

Yet, one unanswered question about the future of this season remains hovering over this team: Can Ohio State win away from home, and can it do so with consistency?

“I think that's the question about us,” Holtmann said, “and that's the question we'll put in front of us as a group.”

Holtmann hasn’t hidden from the Buckeyes’ struggles away from the Schottenstein Center, though it’s not as though he had a choice.

Ohio State has a 4-6 record in away games and a 1-1 mark in neutral site games. Of the four wins, two came against Big Ten bottom-feeders – Northwestern and Nebraska – and one was a beatdown of the worst North Carolina Tar Heels team in nearly two decades. The sole victory versus a team ranked within the top-80 by KenPom happened on Feb. 4 when the Buckeyes topped Juwan Howard’s Michigan Wolverines, 61-58, for what was at the time their first three-game winning streak since early December. Ohio State also gets credit for beating Kentucky at a neutral site, though doing so in Las Vegas doesn’t compare to getting that result in Lexington.

On Sunday afternoon, the Buckeyes will get a final chance to garnish their road resume when they take on No. 16 Michigan State in East Lansing.

Playing in the Breslin Center on Cassius Winston’s Senior Day means Ohio State will deservedly enter as an underdog. The general public won’t expect the Buckeyes to beat the Spartans. Yet if they fall to 4-7 in true road games, they’ll end the regular season with only one away victory against a team that will dance in the NCAA tournament.

“We've not always been good on the road,” Holtmann said. “We've not always been tough-minded on the road. We haven't. Coaches, players, got to own that. We've got to try to be better. We're playing a top-10 team in the country on Sunday on Senior Day. We've got to be better on the road. You mention the Michigan win, that was a great win on the road – I guess probably our best road win on the year. We've got to be better.”

BASKETBALL PREVIEW: OHIO STATE ENDS REGULAR SEASON AS UNDERDOG TO MICHIGAN STATE IN EAST LANSING

112637_h.jpg

Long gone are questions of what happened to Ohio State’s winning ways.

Nowadays, the Buckeyes are looking at a top-six seed in the NCAA tournament and top-seven seed in the Big Ten tournament with hopes of both advancing further than before in the Chris Holtmann era in both of them. They’ve won nine of their past 11 games, shooting up to No. 19 in the Associated Press top-25 poll.

WHO WHERE WHEN TV
No. 16 Michigan State (21-9, 13-6) Breslin Center (East Lansing, Michigan) 4:30 p.m. CBS
Yet in the regular season finale they’ll be underdogs.

Michigan State, ranked 16th, plays host to Ohio State at the Breslin Center on Sunday. The game tips off at 4:30 p.m., and it will mark Cassius Winston’s last game in East Lansing.

Just like the Buckeyes (21-9, 11-8 Big Ten), Tom Izzo’s Spartans (21-9, 13-6 Big Ten) have gotten on a bit of a roll lately. They’re riding a four-game winning streak, having won five of the past six games, including victories against Penn State, Iowa, Maryland and Illinois.

On Sunday, two Big Ten teams that haven’t lost in at least two-and-a-half weeks will collide.

THREE IMPORTANT SPARTANS

CASSIUS WINSTON (6-FOOT-1, 185 POUNDS)
The already legendary Spartans guard will play his final game in front of a home crowd on Sunday in what’s sure to be an emotional Breslin Center. Winston, last season’s Big Ten Player of the Year, is leading the Spartans in both points per game (18.3) and assists per game (5.9). The only goal for Ohio State against him? Don’t get torched. He’ll get his buckets, but the Buckeyes can’t allow him to take over the game. Essentially anything else is a win.

XAVIER TILLMAN SR. (6-FOOT-8, 245 POUNDS)
The big-bodied forward recently became a father, so now he officially has Dad Strength. Beyond that added, always important variable, Tillman averages a double-double, recording 13.7 points and 10.4 rebounds in 32 minutes per game. He’ll be another stiff matchup for Kaleb Wesson in the middle. He shoots 54.8 percent from the field.

ROCKET WATTS (6-FOOT-2, 185 POUNDS)
The aptly named freshman has come into his own recently, scoring at least 13 points in each of the past three games. Like most freshmen, Watts has had quite a few highs and lows this season. But as it wraps up on Saturday, he’s becoming a more relied-upon scorer. He has, however, struggled with efficiency. Watts has hit 38.5 percent of his shots from the field and 27 percent of his 3-pointers, yet he attempts more than four triples per game.

THREE IMPORTANT BUCKEYES

CJ WALKER
In recent weeks, Walker has begun to find his groove. He’s scored in double figures in five consecutive games for the first time in his career, averaging 10.8 points, 4.5 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.5 turnovers in 33.3 minutes in the past 10 games. Facing a talented Winston-led backcourt, Walker will need to play with a high degree of efficiency.

E.J. LIDDELL
The best basketball of Liddell’s career has come at an optimal time for Ohio State, which is gearing up for postseason play. The freshman forward, coming off a 17-point, 11-rebound performance against his home-state team Illinois, will try to maintain momentum in enemy territory. With Kyle Young unavailable, as he continues dealing with a high ankle sprain, Liddell will again be important for the Buckeyes.

LUTHER MUHAMMAD
Throughout the Big Ten slate, Muhammad has consistently drawn every opponent’s top perimeter offensive weapon, and that figures to again be the case on Saturday. There’s a good chance he’ll end up assigned to Winston, one of the nation’s best guards. On the other end, he’ll try to get back into an offensive rhythm. Muhammad shot 0-for-6 from the field against Illinois and has missed all four 3-point attempts in the past four games. Shooting on the road has been an issue for the Buckeyes this season.

The short bench will really become an issue when you're playing back-to-backs in a tournament. Gaffney hasn't been a major factor and I don't expect we're going to see Carton, but I'm hoping Young can get back soon. Even limited minutes would help.

I'm expecting he'll be noticeably absent vs Sparty's front line today.

i said earlier that i'd rather see osu play two conference tournament games than three, but i think i'd rather see osu play one conference tournament game than two. playing four (or more) games in one week doesn't sound so good when you're only 7 (or 6) deep.

i'll never root for osu to lose, but i won't be sad if we lose to purdue/minny/whomever. i mean, it's not like the selection committee even cares all that much about conference tournaments other than bubble-team performances and automatic qualifications.
