Ohio State vs Villanova: What’s Going To Happen
It’s not just that Ohio State got back a few key pieces and played great at times against Loyola. It’s that it seems to have one massive chip on its shoulder.

Not to get too psychoanalytical about this, but the NCAA Tournament is always about nerves. If you watched over the last few days, you could easily tell the players and teams that simply weren’t their normal selves.

What helps get past that? An angry attitude, and after everyone seemed to pick Loyola, Ohio State got awfully surly. Now the Buckeyes have the personnel, the talent, and the chip on its shoulder to keep this going.

Villanova will have its moments from three, but get ready for one of the more physical games yet from the Buckeyes.

The Wildcats will score from the outside, but there won’t be enough happening inside.

Ohio State vs. Villanova
ESPN BPI projection: Villanova by 7 points (77.1% win probability)

After the most impressive defensive performance of the season during a win over Loyola Chicago, the Buckeyes try and catch lightning in a bottle again at the end of the floor against NCAA Tournament mainstay and favored Villanova.

"All along we knew we were a dangerous team, we just had to get things back rolling," Eugene Brown said. "We just feel like we have something to prove to everybody that counted us out, everybody that continues to count us out. It would mean a lot to us."

“We've been a little bit not as much in touch since I left the league, but just tremendous respect, and I've stolen so much from him and his program,” Holtmann said at a press conference Saturday. “He has no idea because I didn't tell him. I just didn't tell him. I just watched his practices, watched his teams, anything that he was doing in terms of teaching I would watch. I even to this day, I have stolen a lot from him. So thanks, Jay.”

Teams on Upset Alert on Day 4 of 2022 Men's NCAA Tournament

Villanova Wildcats (South Region, No. 2 Seed)
3 OF 4

Opponent: No. 7 Ohio State Buckeyes (20-11)

DraftKings Moneyline: Villanova -210

Villanova didn't show any weaknesses against No. 15 Delaware, cruising to an 80-60 win. But with all due respect, that's precisely what was supposed to happen.

We know Villanova is good, but a victory over a Blue Hens team that has never beaten the Wildcats in 16 tries doesn't tell us a whole lot about the state of the squad. It is their sixth straight win, though, and the Big East tournament champs' guard-heavy lineup hit on 13-of-28 three-point attempts (46.4 percent) while combining for 16 assists.

In taking down Cinderella darlings Loyola Chicago on Friday, Ohio State showed a renewed commitment to defense, particularly beyond the arc. Not only did the Buckeyes hold the Ramblers to 41 points, but they also allowed only eight three-pointers on 28 attempts. That percentage (28.6) was nearly 10 points below Loyola Chicago's season percentage of 38.3 heading into the game.

Ohio State coach Chris Holtmann told reporters after the game that it was "the best defensive performance we've really had in a couple years." High praise, and it couldn't come at a better time.

So now it's just a question of which Ohio State defense shows up Sunday. Will its defense again rise to the challenge, this time against a far more potent offense, or will it revert to the team that dropped four of five, including surrendering 78 points to moribund Nebraska, to end its regular season?

After Friday, the Buckeyes' chances seem a lot better.

I'm a big fan of Jay Wright. He does things the right way, constructs teams of talented but not superstar players, teaches great D and great O. They hit the glass harder than a blind pigeon.

I'd definitely rather be facing Rick Barnes but it is what it is. Go Bucks!
