#2 Villanova vs #7 tOSU, Sun 3/20, 2:40 ET on CBS

Chronic concussion issues: Why no protective headgear?

Don't really think it would do much aside from wearing a football helmet. I feel bad for him, he just plays so hard that I'm not sure much could have been done. Kyle is a dammed legend and I hope the best for him in whatever he does moving forward.

Yeah, there’s really nothing he can wear to prevent what happened from happening

i officially watched more mens basketball today than I have all year long. They said he’s had three concussions in the past 12-months? That’s amazing that he was even cleared to play at all… I know that we generally consider medical retirement after 3-ever.

I don’t begrudge a kid wanting to leave it all on the playing field, but it was hard to watch a girlfriend and his child while they were talking about three in a 12-month stretch.

Pray God let’s him heal and there’s no long term effects.

To be fair, I feel like the staff monitored the situation pretty well. I know you're not saying the staff messed up, just watched it all year and I think they could have played Kyle way more but didn't for his own health (just throwing that out there so you know I'm not being an ass). Kyle is a freaking warrior and insisted on being out there. Again, legend. Unfortunately, he took a shot out there that forced the hand. I don't think we win either way, but I wanted him on the floor no matter the result. Nothing but love for Kyle.

Yes, correct. Not saying the staff messed up at all. It’s been very enlightening to coach at a college level this year. To see, first hand, how injuries are handled and how, without question, playing post injury is largely dictated by the training / medical staff. If he shouldn’t be out there… he wouldn’t. I’m at a school that has a fraction of the resources of tOSU, so I can imagine how much better they have it than most.

That said, the science being what it is… with the severity and ease by which the next concussion occurs after the first… let alone the third… I just hope for his (and family) long term wellbeing.

"I would like to start by saying we really respect Ohio State and what a tough, intelligent team they are," Villanova coach Jay Wright said. "We take pride in this victory because we watch a lot of film on them and they're really good. They're really good and tough in how they defended us. E.J. Liddell is a beast and Malaki Branham is a handful, we struggled with him. I'm just proud of these guys, proud of their leader championship and Collin and Jermaine have been great leaders for this team their whole careers and Eric, he's got guts, man. This is a big-time shot he hit. But he has confidence. He's a confident kid. That's what we love about him."

His retirement decision is not health-related, but rather a case of him being ready to take a break from coaching, sources said. A combination of burnout and a career filled with substantial success created a scenario in which there is nothing left for Wright to prove. He's walking away as one of the all-time great coaches in college basketball history.

You don't see very many successful coaches (in any sporty) retire at 60; but, good for him. I hope he enjoys retirement.
