'22 TN PG Dominiq Penn (Washington Verbal)

looks like dom wants to separate himself from the osu offer so that other coaches don't assume anything.

How’s recruitment going? What are the biggest factors in you deciding where to play at the next level?

DP: I don’t want to mention any schools because my recruitment is completely wide open. I’ve been focused on being on an even better leader and point guard.
when even your aau coach stresses that your recruitment is "wide open"...

after 4 crystal balls to osu (0 within the last year), penn receives an "undecided" from brian snow. penn just received an offer from northern kentucky after an offer from toledo, which are his only two offers since the fall. seems rather safe to say that penn's offer from osu is non-committable.

watched him (online) in live aau play a couple weeks ago. very small sample size, but penn was easy to miss. not a guard who imposed himself and seemed to play more off-the-ball than on. little impact if not hitting jumpers. again, it was just one game and there's plenty of time this spring and summer for him to showcase greater range and tenacity. all he needs is one good weekend for some good mid-majors and perhaps a lower high-major to jump on board.

Too small.

And Ja Morant is the right size? Nate Robinson? I'm not saying size is irrelevant, but superior talent always finds a way to shine. It is hard to evaluate talent, even moreso when the Rice commission restricted coaches to less AAU scouting, and no one is perfect at guessing the future.

I feel like you are not going to get the best out of Dom if you play him off the ball, as from what I have seen, his strength lies in his ball skills.

It is unfortunate that Dom had not gotten more offers, it does seem like most people feel he is not quite OSU-level, but as I said it is an inexact science and often kids whose parents had great playing success surprise everyone with how they end up because many take a more professional approach to the game.

As I've said before, someone I trust has told me that diva'ish behavior has been somewhat off-putting.

penn showed an inability to get past his defender and find any crevices as a result. teammate guards johnson and anthony were quite a bit more competent at that, though. penn was mostly relegated as a spot-up shooter probably because he wasn't showcasing competence at breaking down defenders.

in and of itself, penn's height is not the problem. penn's size is not the problem. penn's average athleticism is not the problem. add them all together, though, and you can see why the offers have been sparse.

scoonie wasn't tall; however, scoonie was a fireplug. he had "spurtability," tenacity, and could finish through contact because he had some heft. right now, dom is not scoonie. too passive.

And Ja Morant is the right size?

Ja Morant is 6'3 with a 6'7 wingspan and is an absolute freak athletically. He's got more in common with Russell Westbrook than Dom Penn.

I agree with your basic point, I guess, but I also understand why the staff apparently isn't completely sold on Penn. He's not a consistent enough producer right now to make up for his lack of physical assets.

quick read-up of the school:

it's extremely small at about 70 students total for grades 9-12. all but a handful play basketball. mostly international players. sends about 3 players per class to play college ball somewhere (mostly mid-major and lower). most notable player was shai-gilgeous alexander (uk). school almost closed a few months ago due to finances.

sounds like a good opportunity for dom to show his face to a new set of eyes. at this point, probably a player who will end up at a school in the bottom half of the mid-major level. perhaps a prep college. this aau season was not good to him. not at all. northern kentucky was his only offer since the start of the season.

mostly i feel bad for him because it can't be any fun for a high school senior-to-be to transfer states away.
