Game Thread (2004) Bowl Game: MasterCard Alamo Bowl - Oklahoma State - 12/29/04 (W, 8-4/4-4)

Greetings from San Antonio !

I've been waiting for the Buckeyes to make an appearance in the Alamo Bowl for a bazillion years! Too bad it took a less-than-glamorous season for my wish to come true :(

I live In San Antonio, have been since 1992, and work about 15 minutes from the AlamoDome. For those of you who are considereing traveling here to take in the game ... check it out:

1) As of 30 November 2004, the only seats available via Ticketmaster are in either end zone, or the upper deck (oxygen mask required). The kind young lady at the Alamodome box office told me that most of the lower level seats went "to the schools."

2) The legal ticket brokers in Texas have lower level seats on the OSU side of the Dome from $195 - $300. The brokers told be that the OSU tickets are selling *fast*. These might be seats that the brokers purchased from either "season ticket holders" (meaning someone who bought AlamoBowl tickets in years past ... they get the first shot) or from when they first went on sale - in AUGUST!

3) There are a gazillion hotels on The Riverwalk here in San Antonio. They can be expensive, but very convenient. We've had two NCAA Final Four tornaments here, and all the fans who stayed on The Riverwalk had an absolute blast (its why the NCAA came back a second time). If you do decide to stay on The Riverwalk, you are in walking distance from the game, restaraunts, pubs, and all of downtown. Its kind of an upscale version of High Street ... with Margaritas!

4) I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the City of San Antonio and the AlamoDome DO NOT ALLOW ANY TAILGATE PARTIES, AND NO OVERNIGHT PARKING AT THE DOME. Believe me, all of us down here know that sucks, but its just the way it is. Rumor has it that the Alamo Bowl will be sponsoring an "official tailgate party" at the Sunset Station complex, just outside the AlamoDome.

Another Buckeye in Texas

Yankee, do you already have your ticket? I am in section 115, row 2 (between the 10 and 15). If any other fans are coming down, and need anything, give me a holler (my nick @ yahoo.com). Unfortunately, I can't put anyone up for the night (I have four kids), but if you come in that morning and need a pickup from the airport, or a place to rest prior to the game (7 pm kickoff), let me know.

There are quite afew to choose from on The Riverwalk:

* Dirty Nellie's in the Hilton Palacio Del Rio Hotel (Irish pub)
* Howl At The Moon (piano bar)
* Hard Rock Cafe (self-explanatory)
* Swig (Martini bar)
* Pat O'Brien's (recently opened, and straight from the French Quarter in Nawlins!)
* Dick's Last Resort (not for the thinskinned - waitstaff abuse isn't tolerated ... its MANDATORY!)
* Fat Tuesday's (Mardi Gras theme)

BUT ... a short bus or taxi ride away (5 minutes) will take you to the Blue Star Brewery ... ya gotta love a brewpub that's IN the brewery!

Bars on the Riverwalk

Well, lessee...

You've got the generic Hard Rock Cafe and Dick's Last Resort (the San Diego one is better).

Howl at the Moon is pretty good (dueling piano bar, I've got a buddy that plays there (he's a ND fan, poor guy)).

Lots of good looking women there though. Call me prior and I could probably get you in free ($7 cover charge).

There's another big one down there, but I can't remember the name. What kind of music do you like?

The Marriott Riverwalk is kewl ... its got a big mall and food court right next to it.

Here areaa few Riverwalk bars with completely different personalities:

Club Cohiba

Club Cohiba can be described in two words: classy and cool (and a great cigar bar). This little hideaway is located in the basement of the Havana River Walk Inn ($$$$) and is decorated in the nostalgic spirit of the '40s and '50s with red overstuffed leather chairs and oak tables.

Esquire Tavern

A classic dive. A visit to Esquire Tavern is almost like taking a step back in time. Established in 1933, this watering hole has retained much of its original furnishings and decoration. Flocked wallpaper, pressed tin ceilings and brass foot railings at the bar offer a glimpse of this tavern's past. Moreover, the Esquire boasts Texas' longest wooden bar (79 feet) and has been distinguished as the state's longest continually operated bar. Rumor has it that is has the only 24/7 liquor license in San Antonio (its that old!).

A couple minutes away is the King William District, where wealthy German settlers built BIG mansions. You can get there from the Marriott via a VIA trolley (VIA is the local municipal bus comglomerate). Besides the Blue Star Brewery, check out Rosario's, Bar America (another classic dive) and Cochina Azucar (they usually have some phat live salsa music on friday and saturday). If you dig good coffee, stop by Espuma while your in the neighborhood.

Ladies of the little XII South

I just so happen to be a Huge Buckeye fan and lucky enough to live in little XII South Territory. In earlier threads there has been discussion regarding the ladies of Texas and Texas A&M. Since I currently date an Aggie and have attended games involving all the little XII South teams, I thought I'd rank and give you my take on each little XII South schools "talent" base. Remember, these rankings and opinions are mine, and any likeness to someone else's rankings or opinions is purely a coincidence.

T1. OU and the other OSU - All I've got to say is they sure know how to grow them north of the Red River. Must have to do with the family trees not having very many branches.

3. Texas Tech - I'm pretty sure Daisy Duke shorts, Cowboy hats and an extra Liver are standard issue for incoming freshman at this school. After all, what else are you going to do in the western plains of Texas but drink and Cowgirl Up? Oh and just FYI, if your pre or post game festivities involve a drinking contest for money with anyone from this school, you might as well reach back and insert the stick because you're going to end up looking like a sucker.

T4. Baylor and Texas - Country gals whose daddies have made tons of money being doctors, lawyers and computer geeks. The only reason they attend school is in hopes of getting their MRS. degrees.

5. Texas A&M - If you've ever had a thing for a farmer's daughter, then this is definitely the school for you.

The two most likely choices for the Buckeyes opponent are the other OSU and Texas Tech. More than likely TT will be it, unless OU stumbles in the little XII title game. Which if you know anything about little XII title games, the favorite doesn't always win. For example, OU, Nebraska, Colorado and K-State have all lost recently while being heavy favorites. Either way, the sights off the field should be just as good as the sights on the field. Ya'll take care now, ya hear!!

Being a Big 12 South lady connoisseur I agree in part, and disagree in part with your assessments...

My rankings:

1. Texas: where my wife went, so any other ranking would mean the sofa.

2. Tech: I'm biased towards my alma-mater, but this where loaded parents send their (naughty) daughters when they don't think they are worth SMU $$ and are afraid of them turning into Austin tree-huggers. The home of the Mrs. degree.

3. OU: Norman is the nicest city in Oklahoma for one reason...it is full of Texans! Why girls go to school there -- See Tech above.

4. Baylor: Abercrombie & Fitch bible covers. Very small student body and very very clicky. Fun to look at, but you need to learn the secret handshakes.

5. OSU: I must disagree...these aren't farmers daughters, these are redneck girls. If you can stand listening to 4h stories, then maybe they are for you. I've been to stillwater and you can't drink most of them pretty enough.

6. A&M: I have much respect for the Aggies, but they were an all guys school until the 60's or something like that. Some argue that they still are. My thought on A&M girls is summed up by this Alamo Bowl story...when A&M was getting pounded by Penn State four of five years ago, I sat next to an Aggie and thing that I later saw was his girlfriend. He was a clean-cut, sharp looking dude about average height and weight. She was a hog. I spent most of the game wondering if this thing on her face was a rash or maybe she just needed a shower. She grunted all the Aggie cheers and cussed like a sailor when things went south for A&M. I thought maybe she was the guy's sister, but at one point he leaned over and kissed her. I nearly lost my nachos. The bottom line is that not only are the Aggie women scary, but they beat down otherwise decent guys into having no self-respect. Ohio State fans deserve better eye-candy.

but that's just my thought.
