Game Thread (2004) Game One: Cincinnati - 9/4/04 (W, 1-0)

I think it will be close. But, I expect Tressel will feed them a heavy dose of power football, with a few deep throws mixed in. It'll be real close at halftime, but our depth wins it in the 4th quarter. I'll say: OSU - 26 UC - 12

I was at the DUI game where McMullen started for Belisari. Not much to remember, except before the game, some Illini fans made a chalk outline in the parking lot and wrote ".22" on it for the jersey number. (in reference to SB's BAC level the night before.) Pretty funny, especially since everyone at that tailgate party would've blown AT LEAST that high.

IMO Cincy will not be able to run the ball at all!!!!! Guduigly(sp) will have to pass and he will have at least 2-3 picks. If they cannot run they will get an ass whoopin.

If we can run the ball we will hang a pretty high score on them. Even if JT runs the I-formation every down in the last two quarters Pittman and Haw will shine.

The only way I see this being close is if we play horrible. If we cannot run, have turnovers, and play bad on special teams the margin of victory will be 10 points or less.

I think we spank their butts pretty good. Dantonio is gonna really miss the Buckeyes after this one.

OSU 41
Cincy 13

Some peoples over confidence going into this game kills me.......

Sure- we will win, but how many times have we had close games with our in state "cupcakes?"

Like i said, we will win, but fists will be clinched and knuckles will be white in the 3rd, possibly early fourth. But then again thats part of being a buckeye fan. Close in state games are kinda like death and taxes i suppose. :wink2:

Hope i'm wrong about how close it'll be- If so the new pups will be way ahead of the learning curve!

These coaches know each other almost like a marraige, and now that they've seperated.....they really want to beat each other, with Dantonio probably getting the nod here (he got sckrewed in the custody case....lol). In his mind, no matter how good of friends, it's still justification that he's the better coach. Day in and day out these guys (coaches) are the most competitive bunch in the stadium. Also remember that if there's a coach out there (besides Alverez) that can outsmart Tress, you gotta believe Dantonio has a decent chance. One reason they were so successful at OSU was because they new each other's system so well. Ive been a coaches son all my life, and I can tell you that coaches get up for these kinds of games (old buddy vs. old buddy) more than any other game. To them, it's like getting one over on your ex wife!! That being said, I think we have alot of unanswered questions, but I'm, like youse guys, am very excited about the possibilities. Cant ya see it now, first time in a billion years (an Ohio college beats us at home)...."Cinci Wins In The Shoe"......well me neither.....but this one will be a real chess match. Overall I see another semi-nailbitter here, with the Bucks simlpy overpowering by the 4th.....OSU 21- Cinci - 13.

My 2 cents:

OSU is finally here with a JT team .... top to bottom.
While it is JZ's forst game .... this is a kid that has had a career of big games.
He has been on the sidelines of two Fiesta Bowls.
He knows the drill.

He is not a freshman just stepping onto Campus a few weeks before the first game.
Give him a little run support, and a little of time in the pocket, and watch out.

Finally we have a QB that can hit someone in full stride.

IMHO ....
what tOSU needs to fix most is the return game ......
we need to break off a few decent returns.

While our kicking games have been spectacular, and our own kickoff D has been pretty good, our returns have not been pretty for the last few years.

Final Score:

OSU 35
Cincy 3

They don't have the horses that we have in the stable.

I just don't see anyway that we are going to have an easy time with this team. I mean if you look at things on paper they are not that bad.

Guidiugiulieageialeili is going to be throwing quick outs, slants, screens, and whatever else the OC can think of to get rid of the ball quickly. It will be a pass to set up the run approach. The key for them offensively will be their WR will need to catch the ball. I have read and heard on the radio from more than one source that their WR just didn't make any plays for Guidigeidlegilaeiagli last season, which was a big part of the reason why they had such a bad season. I can't imagine that they will not bring their "A" game to the shoe.

Defensively they weren't horrible last season, and now they have the best defensive gameplanner and adjustments maker in the game on their sidelines. I think they will be very solid defensively. We certainly will not march up and down the field. If we win by more than 10 points we played a pretty good game.

Keep in mind we are probably not going to come into the game as fired up as UC. They will be drinking to kool aid all through camp. Coach D will just keep hammering home that they were not good enough for Ohio State, they think they already have you beat, etc. They will be ready, I don't know if Ohio State will view this game the same way. They haven't in the previous two meetings, so we'll see.

I would feel better if we didn't open with them.

The host of the Cincy sports station I'm listening to right now was just talking about UC. He recently interviewed Gino and was told they're basically adopting tOSU's offense because that is what Coach D is used to. They're not going to be throwing nearly as much as they have the past few years. I think this bodes well for us. :)

UC will keep it close for awhile, but I don't see them putting up alot of points. Their inexperience and weakness at WR will allow OSU to focus on Hall and shut down their O. I think that we will struggle offensively as well. I'm thinking that the final score will be like 24-7.

".....but this one will be a real chess match."

If this game is even close going into the fourth quarter, then OSU was not yet ready to play well as a team. This is a chess match in which the two coaches are not playing with the same types of pieces. I know UC has made it tough on OSU the last two times, but it should not be that way, and if it is even close this time, than Dantonio has substantially outcoached Tressel.
