2005 All-American Bowl (mega-merge)

I just read that Myron Rolle from Princeton, NJ is there too. He might be the #1 player in the country next year. Has over 30 offers already including offers from OSU, FSU, Miami, Oklahoma, USC, Virginia, scUM, and Rutgers.

He mentions that the schools that are recruiting him the hardest so far are Virginia, Florida State, Michigan, Ohio State, Iowa, Maryland, and Oklahoma.

I'll be checking Rolle out next year for sure... but I'm still surprised that he goes to a school that does not have a powerhouse rep nor plays a powerhouse schedule... yet his family lives in the heart of the best teams in the state !?!?! mere minutes from Bosco (Toal, Garvin, Simms) and Bergen Catholic (Cushing).. go figure...

From what I gather form the article:

We are getting the best/fastest RB from the Eastern squad (Wells)
We are getting the best OL from the squad (Boone)
We are getting one of the top DB from the Eastern squad (Jamario)
We have a great shot at getting the best LB from the Eastern squad (McCoy)

Wow... what a bang up job JT is doing. The fact that it was reported Gwaltney hangs out with Cushing and Turner, instead of Boone, Wells and O'Neal makes you think he is gone, but that is jmo. Anyways, would Love to have him, but we will just have to wait and see. But I am just focused on how awesome this class is going to be and how many championships we have the opportunity to win!!!!!!!
And it sounds like Boone is doing a little recruiting on his own to get McCoy into a Scarlet and Gray helmet. There will be lots of opportunity for LBs in our Dee after this year.

Mendenall has a hurt hamstring

The injury big has really hit the East squad for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. No one has gotten badly injured but there are many sprains and bruises.
</TD></TR><TR><TD colSpan=3>
Day three of the U.S. Army American Bowl for the East squad was more of the same except with less players. Many of the players watched from the sidelines as the injury bug has really hit the East squad. Defensive end Melvin Alaeze, defensive back Demetrice Morley, running back Rashard Mendenhall, and offensive tackle Eugene Monroe did not dress today while defensive lineman Earl Heyman missed the first Wednesday session while defensive lineman James McKinney missed the second. Alaeze has a sprained wrist, Morley has a sprained (right) ankle, Mendenhall has a hamstring injury and Monroe has a bruised knee. Heyman has had some vision problems while McKinney has a hip flexor injury. Safety Kenny Phillips missed most of practice with a groin injury, while cornerback Jamario O’Neal missed half of practice with an ankle injury and Alex Boone was kicked in the left calf and he was in noticeable pain the rest of practice and is now limping noticeably.

“The numbers are tough (39 players per squad),” said East Head Coach Kenny Lucas from Washington (D.C.) Gonzaga College High School. “There were about a half-dozen or so that didn’t get to go today. Physically, all these guys will be ready to go. We (the coaches) just have to make sure they are grasping the mental things we are trying to do. Plus, we need to mesh and gell. But I think we have guys that can go both ways and we should have the numbers you like to have.”

Some good news for the East in regards to wide receiver Fred Rouse and running back Elan Lewis (knee). They both returned to practice. Rouse saw limited action today coming off a foot injury on Monday. Rouse did some light running and ran some routes in the seven on seven drills.

”I feel a whole lot better,” said Rouse. “I plan on playing on Saturday and playing well.”

Speaking of the seven on seven drills, all three quarterbacks made some very nice throws, especially Jake Christensen. He threw several beautiful strikes to wide receivers Nyan Boateng, Patrick Turner and Trey Stross. The star among the receiver corps was actually tight end Tony Moeaki. Moeaki made the catch of the day, a one handed diving grab on the sidelines. He also made several other impressive catches. “Coming here I was a little rusty because I have not played since mid-November,” said Moeaki. “I am getting into the swing of things now.” It looks like Moeaki will be a focal point of the East offense for Saturday’s game.

A Few Thoughts
(Iowa commitment) wide receiver Trey Stross continues to impress by catching everything thrown in his direction. Patrick Turner has been the most impressive wide receiver this week. Nyan Boateng came alive today and appeared to shake some of the rust off. At tight end, Anthony Moeaki is appearing to be a huge weapon for the East.

Dace Richardson and Christopher Scott played very well today. Scott could be a devastating interior lineman; he delivers a blow, locks on, and drives people into the turf. Richardson practiced all day with a chip on his shoulder and he punished people.

Kicker Matthew Waldron continued to drill his kicks from all over the field. During kickoff drills, Waldron continuously kicked the ball into endzone. Waldron is very accurate, and still awaiting his first scholarship.

Three hits today were very impressive. Rico McCoy laid out Elan Lewis. Then on a screen pass TE Anthony Moeaki peeled back and blew up LB Derek Nicholson. Derek Nicholson crushed Toney Baker on an off-tackle play. Baker spun away and broke a long run down the left sideline.

The play of the day came from TE Anthony Moeaki who delivered a stiff-arm, separated from the defender, and made a one-handed circus catch.

A Few Standouts
Even though the East squad resembled a M*A*S*H unit today there were still a couple of standouts. Ryan Bain has been extremely impressive. The 6-foot-2, 260-pounder, from Bolingbrook, Illinois easily had the best day of the defensive lineman. Bain had a lot to prove coming to San Antonio. He played linebacker in high school and had to adjust to a new position this week. He looks like a seasoned veteran out there. One linebacker stood out above the rest today. While Brian Cushing and Rico McCoy are getting most of the press, Jerome Hayes, from Bayonne, New Jersey showed some serious skills today. Hayes can flat run and he showed tremendous coverage skills and pass rushing abiliy.
< br> The more I see Justin King, the more I like him. King is extremely quick and his coverage techniques are also very good. Just continuously frustrated wide receivers today at the line of scrimmage, there’s no doubt that Justin King will make an instant impact in Happy Valley.

Kenny Phillips, the No. 1 safety prospect in the nation, according to Scout.com, sat out of today’s practice and that meant more valuable reps for Garrett Seeger. Seeger responded by making a couple of nice plays in 7-on-7 drills as well as making a couple of good tackles in goal line defense.

Roy Miller Through the Line

</TD><TD noWrap width=3></TD><TD vAlign=top>West Practice Notebook - Wednesday
By Staff Scout.com
Date: Jan 12, 2005

The skill players got a lot of work in drills today as the linemen did less banging. Several players have separated themselves from the pack. Scout.com's team of analysts was on hand.
</TD></TR><TR><TD colSpan=3>
The Quarterbacks Headline the West Squad:

Texas quarterback commit Ryan Perrilloux displayed exceptional arm strength during Wednesday's practice with the deep ball. Yet he struggled to take velocity off his mid-range passes during 7-on-7 drills, throwing balls that sometimes skipped across the hands of West receivers. He made up for his struggles in the passing game, however, by sidestepping the pass rush of the West defense and scrambling for several long gains twice during a controlled scrimmage at the end of practice.

USC quarterback commit Mark Sanchez overcame a somewhat lackluster start to Wednesday's practice in which he underthrew several receivers during 7-on-7 drills to rally back late in the session with a solid showing. Sanchez displayed a wide variety of different passes, including a nice a 20-yard toss to West wide receiver DeSean Jackson during the controlled scrimmage. Thus far, Sanchez appears to be more comfortable with the West's traditional style offense, while Perrilloux seems constrained without the shotgun offense that he excelled in the last 2 years at East St. John High School (Reserve, La.).

"(Perrilloux) isn't quite as polished as Sanchez," West assistant coach Jim Rackley said. "Everything that Sanchez does looks easy. That's how those good athletes make things work. He's just a natural." Receiver Notes: Wideouts standing out today were primarily D.J. Hord of Kansas City, Kansas and DeSean Jackson of Long Beach, California. Hord, who looked very good Monday and Tuesday, turned in another solid effort Wednesday. Jackson was his usual athletic self, creating separation and grabbing everything. Doubling as a KR/PR, he has shown reliable hands. But we won’t know how effective his return ability might be until the Special teams units operate at full-speed, which thus far they have yet to do… Martellus Bennett stood out about as well as a tight end could given the fact that for whatever reason, the tight ends were not featured as much in today’s 7-on-7 or during the controlled scrimmage. His efforts today, in terms of seeing it, snatching it, was back to Bennett standards…

Defensive Back Notes:Two cover corners sticking out in today’s practice were Derek Pegues of Batesville, Mississippi and Kevin Thomas of Oxnard, California. These two young men provided terrific coverage on the West All-American pass-catchers, start to finish.... Korey Mangum, of La Marque, Texas made the most of his opportunities today, sticking with the wideouts and showing that he, too, has game. Mangum looked very good in coverage today. Reggie Smith of Edmond, Oklahoma had another good day of practice, his third in a row, and is someone that’s going to do wonderful on the next level as a free safety…

General Observations:

Raymond Henderson was mentioned on Monday as one of the most athletic big men on the field for the West, and he didn't do anything to change that notion today. He raced one of the defensive backs in a back pedal and kept pace. Not bad for a defensive end.

The West tried out six men on kick returns today. The first two back deep were Marlon Lucky and Jonathan Stewart. The next two up were Leon Jackson and RJ Jackson were second in line, and Jerrell Wilkerson and DeSean Jackson were the third pair. Don't bet against seeing Desean Jackson back deep for kickoffs on Saturday. Jackson and Reggie Smith look to be the two punt returners.

Speaking of Jackson, the wide receiver may not be the biggest guy on the field, but he may be the best overall player on the West squad on Saturday. He is lightning quick and has shown the best hands on the field. He sticks his routes, catches everything, and is water-bug quick in the open field.

David Gettis has also separated himself as one of the top receivers out here. He meets the ball with his hands and has good size to use his body to shield defenders.

When the West broke for a simulated scrimmage, Mark Sanchez was the first quarterback to run a play, Ryan Perrilloux was second, and Jimmy Barnes was third. Each quarterback has each of his strengths. Barnes knows the offense the best as his dad is the head coach. Perrilloux can create something out of nothing with his ability to run the ball, and Sanchez is simply put the best quarterback out here.

DeMarcus Granger showed off during the break between sessions by walking on his hands. He prefaced it by saying, "I bet you've never seen a 300 pounder walking on his hands." No, we hadn't until then.

Granger and fellow defensive tackle Roy Miller are going to be a force on Saturday. The East's offensive line is huge, but these two tackles are as good as they come. Miller shot through the offensive line today in what would have been a sure sack. "Man, I wish I could have hit Mark Sanchez right then," said Miller with a laugh about the long standing don't hit the quarterback rule in practices.

May I ask where this chat is on BP? Like a certain link or whatnot? Or is it just a thread? Am I too new?

We had a "chat" thread going last week, where updates off a chat session were posted quickly as the chat progressed...not quite real-time but pretty fast (I guess that board chat function wasn't working...Alan could probably explain it better).

Football recruits to make choices
Two sought by OSU to announce on TV during all-star game

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Jim Tressel of Ohio State is coaching a college all-star game Saturday in Florida, but he’ll have one eye on the U.S. Army High School All-American Classic in San Antonio.

During the game, running back Maurice Wells of Jacksonville, Fla., and linebacker Rico McCoy of Washington will be among at least 10 players who are expected to announce their college choice. Wells is expected to choose between Ohio State and Georgia Tech, with a possible late push from Southern California, and McCoy between Ohio State and Tennessee.

Running back Jason Gwaltney of Brooklyn, N.Y., had planned to announce his choice of Ohio State or USC on Saturday but pushed it back to Wednesday.

"It’s been hard for me to concentrate on this game because I’ve been thinking about my decision so much. I’m thinking about it all the time, just like a lot of these other players here," Gwaltney said yesterday.

Does he go to USC, which is coming off its second straight national title but is loaded at running back? Or does he go to Ohio State which, despite being investigated by the NCAA, won the national title in 2002 and has only two scholarship tailbacks returning?

"That’s why I really think Ohio State might be the place I go to, because I know I can come in and have a chance to make an impact," Gwaltney said. "But whatever decision I make, it’s got to be the best for me all around."

If Wells chooses Ohio State, it wouldn’t necessarily dissuade Gwaltney. Wells is a slashing speedster and Gwaltney more of a power back with good speed. Besides, the Buckeyes could use both because they have no true running back in the 2005 class.

They already have two commitments from linebackers, but adding McCoy would be ideal. All three starters from Ohio State’s 33-7 victory over Oklahoma State in the Alamo Bowl — A.J. Hawk, Bobby Carpenter and Anthony Schlegel — will be seniors next season.

The Buckeyes will find out about McCoy and Wells during the all-star game, which will be televised nationally. That’s part of the lure of the game, said recruiting expert Tom Lemming, who was one of the forces behind its creation.

"On one hand, you have most of the nation’s top high-school football players in one game at the same time," he said. "On the other, you have quite a few of these guys announcing where they plan to go to college. For the people out there who care about recruiting, and there are millions of them, it’s a big day."

Like last year when, among others, Ted Ginn Jr. picked Ohio State over USC and Miami, and Adrian Peterson announced he was going to Oklahoma instead of Texas.

"I know for me it’s going to be a big decision, because I like Ohio State, and I like Georgia Tech as well," Wells said.

McCoy had leaned heavily toward Ohio State but leaned back toward Tennessee after making his official visit there.

With the Buckeyes trying to gain commitments from probably no more than six prospects before signing day Feb. 2, "what happens Saturday could sew up one-third of those spots," said Bill Kurelic, recruiting expert for OhioState.rivals.com. "And in McCoy and Wells, you’re talking about two of the better players at their positions in the country."

This is confusing.......I am sure JG is leaning a different way eachday and it seems like we have a shot at landing him.
