2006 - I'm getting a Woody!

Hoobler will be a good one too. OSU is going to be stacked with very good talent at the LB postion as well as other.
Coach Tressel is really putting together something special at Ohio State. Slowly the recruiting train has been building steam, and depth has been building at all positions with both speed and talent.

I'll see your Freeman and Lenix, and raise you a Curtis Terry, a Curt Lukens, and an Austin Spitler.

It's likely the staff will target this position in this year's recruiting class as well.
Lukens is supposed to be moving to safety. Couldn't get his weight above 225, and the coaches want him at 240. Lenix may run into the same thing. At 5'11" and less than 200 lbs. the guy runs about a 4.4 40, and wouldn't be a bad convert to db too. That really depends on how well he does with the ball in the air though. I'd actually rather see Lenix keep or improve his speed, and move to DB. Rather than have a fast guy, with a 5'11" frame try to put on 45 lbs., and probably slow way down.

2005 we will be a pre-season top 5 team and national title contenders and we are already looking at 2006???

Yes our offense could be scary with returning seniors but our defense will need time to adjust. A whole new linebacking unit is not what I would look forward too. We saw what happened when we lost 3 out of 4 DLineman this past year, it takes time for the young pups to get into the system and play at full speed.

Normally an average non-conference schedule would be the needed time to break them in before conference play, but do we forget that we play AT Texas early in the year??? And hopefully they will be a pissed off Texas because they got whipped in Columbus in 2005  Yes an early loss in Texas could be made up the rest of the year... but as of now I will focus on 2005 and wait til after we win the National Championship before I look at 2006 any more.

Laurinitis is going to be one hell of a LB...probably the best in this years class. The kid was Mr. Football in Minny, and he's a great hitter, excellent tackler, and he's fast as all get out. There are definitely some guys to fill the LB void once Hawk and Co. depart.

Scooter and Stormin: I was just throwing out the names of the guys that have been talked about playing the outside backer positions. Lauranitis, Hoobler, and Kerr should represent a solid core of guys who project as middle linebackers.

(I'm basing projections for Lenix, Lauranitis, and Spitler on Tressel's comments at the NLOID press conference--he talked about Spitler in 4 different possible positions: SAM, ILB, FB, and TE).

You guys have some serious reaches at OLB. I think my Woody is down to about 1/2 erect at this point. Don't Freeman and Laurinaitis both play middle? This is a position that needs to be seriously addressed by JT and boys in next year's recruiting class. Not to mention the fact that not many of those kids are going to be ready right away. YIKES!

It is much easier to break in new LB's if you have an experienced DL. See 2003. 3 out of DL's return and everyone wants name our LB's to the all-world team. The following year, when it's the other way around, we struggle. We have enough athletes coming in at LB, that should be very good with a DL in front of them.

I specifically set this thread up to focus on Offense because of concerns about LB that could give our D problems.

The savior could be D'Andrea if he gets a 5th year. He is not a candidate as I read the rules, but I have heard the staff may pursue it.

With Homan added to the athletes we already have just one experienced LB could make a ton of difference. Let's not forget that Matt Wilhelm was the only returning LB from the 2001 D.

The killer could be going to Texas early before the new crew gets their footing. But hell, with the O we will have I like our chances of winning a shoot-out with the Horns.

2003 was a little different. We had 2 senior starters (Pagac & Reynolds) and AJ Hawk. Hawk did see playing time during the 2002 season. So slightly different to 2006 where all 3 starters will be new and the oldest will be Freeman and the others will be frosh & sophomores. Of course it will depend if we can blow out some people this year to get the young linebackers into the game.

Sorry Oh8ch, but really the offense is exciting. But you know that it will be our defense that tells us how great a season will be. Until Tressel proves me wrong by showing that he is willing to consistently score 35+ points, I will still get excited about a season by how well the defense looks coming back.

Well 2006 is a ways away, but no way can you tell me that besides Freeman, the rest will be frosh and sophomores. I think its more likely we see 3 Juniors starting in 06.

If by 3 Juniors starting in '06 you mean Terry, Hoobler, and Freeman then yes, I definitely agree with you. The pre-spring depth chart certainly backs that up. Then again, this is pre-spring. D'Andrea's med. red shirt might change that, as well as possible incoming standouts. I would say the three juniors though.
