Former FF Keeper Champ
O.K., we started talking about this in August for the 2004 & 2005 Seasons, and in April for 2006. But in light of the recent misfortunes of the last week (with no disrespect intended to the departing Seniors & Juniors & the fantastic year that 2006 truly was) I'm ready to start thinking about the 2007 football Season & try to view the positives and potential that we can look forward to this Spring and next Fall.

(I know there is already a thread lumping 'next year' discussion together, but I figured that this would be a thread to stand alone at some point...might as well make it now)

So with Gonzo's declaration to enter the NFL Draft, thus 'losing' one more player who I thought to be a lock for one of the Captains, and assuming that Ginn & Pittman are going to follow, I figured I'd start the conversation about some of the frontrunners (in my mind at least) of who we might see as our 2007 Buckeye Football Captains.

If we use the same format as the last few years (2 Off. & 2 Def.) here are those I believe have the leg up (my guesses indicated by an *):

OFFENSE..........CLASS.....ELIGIBILITY

Kirk Barton*........5th............Sr.
Steve Rehring*.....Sr.............Jr.
Todd Boeckman....Sr.............Jr.
Rory Nicol............Sr.............Jr.

DEFENSE............CLASS.....ELIGIBILITY

Malcolm Jenkins*....Jr..............Jr.
James Laurinaitis*...Jr..............Jr.
Marcus Freeman.....Sr..............Jr.
Vernon Gholston.....Sr..............Jr.
Curtis Terry...........Sr..............Sr.

Like I said, I know were still a long way off from Spring ball, and we still have Recruiting Signing Day, the NFL Draft, and other things to talk about, but I'm ready for the 2007 Football Bucks now!

GO BUCKS!!! :osu:

Should make for a stronger 08 team to tackle the USC juggernaut. We'll lose Barton, probably Jenkins, and possibly Boone or Gholston. I don't think Laurinaitis will go early.

Just took a quick look at the roster. There really aren't many upcoming seniors (eligibility-wise) with a realistic shot at being captains. Might want to add Dionte Johnson to the list for consideration on the offensive side of the ball.

This is the type of thread I like to see, Padraig!

I think Laurenaitis should be a captain for sure. He is the emotional leader of that defense. Gholsten is highly respected and will be an All-American candidate. I think he is another good choice from the defense. And Marcus Freeman is a classy guy with lots of experience, a good head on his shoulders.

I guess Barton would have to be the odds-on favorite from the offensive side of the ball. Not sure if he is a real vocal leader, but you can't help but respect a guy who has been through wars and is an All Big 10 performer.

When do captains get announced? If Boeckman establishes himself as the clear starter prior to that date, you'd have to consider him, too. Kid has been around the program for awhile and would be a good show of faith from the team to name him captain...if he is indeed going to be the onfield extension of Coach Tressel.

I think On defense it should be JL and Malcolm Jenkins. They are top performers and have a nasty streak that always seems to fire up the team. Not picking them would be a travesty IMO. But if not them i think Freeman or Gholston.
