Anyone know the last time a non-senior was a captain? I thought JT didn't like to do that? But what choice will he really have next year?
2002...the offensive captains were picked on a game-by-game basis and included a few juniors.

Barton I would think is a lock. I think we may see a rare (only?) father-son captain combination with Dionte and Pepper.

JL and Gholston or Jenkins or Terry on defense.

I think On defense it should be JL and Malcolm Jenkins. They are top performers and have a nasty streak that always seems to fire up the team. Not picking them would be a travesty IMO. But if not them i think Freeman or Gholston.

I don't think that on field performance = captainship. I think it is more about off field performance and leadership. Would have no argument with JL being a captain. Gholstin and Jenkins? I am not so sure about. Freeman sounds like a good choice on D as well.

As far as offense. Without a doubt had he returned Gonzo would be a captain. In his absence I am not so sure. It would be really awesome to have Wells take that step forward and be the first Sophmore captain, but I doubt that happens. Maybe Robiskie? Barton sounds like a good choice as well.

the Offical 2002 Captains were Mike Doss and Donnie Nickey and then yes they did have players fill in on a game by game basis. Captain status goes to seniors that have proven themselves as leaders on an off the field. If there is no one on the offense that fits those terms Tressel won't name a captain just to name one.

gholston - sr (class, jr elig)
freeman - sr (class, jr elig)
barton - sr (5th yr)
boeckman - sr (citizen)

notice a pattern? personally i would be very surprised if jl or mj were named team captains.

At first I would have picked Laurinaitis over Freeman. But I think I agree with you - Laurinaitis is a 3rd year, and Freeman is a 4th year - Freeman would get the spot from Tressel. I also have to go with Boeckman. Barton and Gholston sound good, too.

Just out of curiosity, has there ever been a captain who wasn't the starter?

Nothing against his amazing physical skills and field awareness, but I don't think Jenkins will be a captain. He's a little too cocky (spiking the ball on the goal line in the PSU game) for a Tressel team. Again, I'm not at all saying he's a jerk. I'm just saying that Tressel will make sure the captains are guys that will lead by example in all situations.

My picks:

Barton
Boeckman
JL
Freeman

Gholston (starter - RS JR)

Grant (starter - SR eligibility)
