So if Johnson is named captain this year, he'll have followed in his dad's footsteps. Father/son buckeye captains is pretty impressive. Anybody know if this have ever been done before?

Kirk Herbstreit and his father Jim. I believe they're the only ones.

edit - add the Davidsons - (James in '64 and Jeff in '89)

There was a good chance it would have happened again if Shawn Springs hadn't left 1 year earlly, since his father Ron was a team captain.

2007 CAPTAINS ARE...

Ohio State Football Captains Named
Barton, Johnson, Laurinaitis elected by team

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Kirk Barton, Dionte Johnson and James Laurinaitis were elected as 2007 captains of the Ohio State football team, as announced to the squad today. Because of close voting on the defense, a second defensive captain will be named for each game.

"I am more appreciative than I can say about being voted captain," said Barton, a senior offensive lineman from Massillon Perry High School in Massillon, Ohio. "We have worked hard and are ready for a great season, and it will be an honor bigger than I can say to serve as a team leader."

"This is a terrific honor and I am humbled to have been given this responsibility by my teammates," says Johnson, a senior fullback from the Eastmoor Academy in Columbus, Ohio. "This team can do great things in 2007."

"Being voted as team captain is a great honor," said Laurinaitis, a junior linebacker from Wayzata High School in Hamel, Minn. "I will do everything I can to represent this team and this university the very best I can. We have a great opportunity starting next Saturday."

Ohio State opens the 2007 season on Saturday, September 1, hosting Youngstown State in a noon game at Ohio Stadium.

Dionte becomes the second son of a tOSU Captain to also become a tOSU Captain. (Herbstreit)

edit - this post didn't seem redundant until I merged the threads.

I'm surprised with Laurinaitis being named captain. I wonder if he makes the rest of the players on his team call him "Captain" or maybe "Cappy"? And do they salute him and/or talk like a pirate? Anyway, not that he doesn't deserve it (who am I to say he isn't, anyway?), but I would have expected a senior or a fourth-year junior. Isn't one of the other linebackers a fourth-year junior? Marcus Freeman, maybe?

Regardless, congratulations to all three of them. I think Kirk Barton has played hard for his whole career, and I've always been a fan of Dionte Johnson.

I wonder things too.... like:

I wonder where Zurp gets his weed.
I wonder how much lead paint Zurp ate as a child.
I wonder if Zurp makes his wife call him Sir Lance-a-lot.
I wonder if Zurp is legally permitted to breed.

Congrats to all the captains. Leadership is always very important.

I have a question and I am surprised at myself for not knowing more on the subject but I believe there is some kind of Captains club. Whether official or not but am wondering that in the case of weekly 4th captains being picked do they all get included in that brotherhood? I would assume so.
In fact I find that I am embarassed that I don't know more. Google!

This from BP.
Captain's Breakfast (now Brunch) - Originally held at Scioto Country Club, a breakfast is held for all past captains the weekend of homecoming. During the event, the current captains are welcomed into the club by past captains and given mugs engraved with their name and season. Since 1934
