2008 tOSU QB discussion (official thread)

why? care to explain?

Besides the fact that I think Pryor is a game changing type of player and Boeckman isn't? Well, this may sound cruel, but I see Todd Boeckman as being insignificant. He's leaving. He is the past. Terrelle Pryor is the future. The more time Pryor gets taking snaps, the better he will become and the more he will grow as a college QB. I believe he is the type of player that has the potential to eventually win the Heisman and lead the Buckeyes to national championship victories. Am I certain that he will do all this? No. However, I am certain that the more snaps he takes the better the chance will be that he can be outstanding and can achieve the things I've mentioned.

Personally, I don't believe Boeckman can be anywhere near as good as Pryor can be. Sure, he's a freshman and he's making mistakes with big losses/sacks, etc. I believe that once he settles in and takes command as he grows up on the field, he has the ability to be one of the best college quarterbacks to ever play the game. That's all the knowledge I need to bench Boeckman (history) and put faith in Pryor (future).

Terrelle is a kid. A teenager. If he continues to progress at a rate of any significance whatsoever, by the time he becomes a man he will be a tremendous athlete. If that happens, I'd advise defenses to take cover.

Ohio State football: Your quarterback opinions

by Doug Lesmerises Monday October 13, 2008, 2:30 PM

Opinions on Ohio State's quarterback situation are out there. Bud Shaw wrote about it after Saturday's game for us.

APTodd Boeckman and Terrelle Pryor

I think it's odd that Jim Tressel and quarterback coach Joe Daniels have said things that make it appear as if Boeckman is not just a backup, that he should be ready when needed and that, as Daniels said last week, Ohio State is not going to ride it out with Pryor no matter what, yet when given a day when the offense is doing little, yet Ohio State is still winning, which should be an ideal time to give Boeckman another look, Tressel said it wasn't even a consideration. The line was certainly a problem on Saturday, and putting in a less mobile quarterback wasn't going to fix that. But Purdue loading up on the run, shutting down the option and limiting the running lanes was a problem, too.
To me, if there really would be consideration of putting in Boeckman against Michigan State or Penn State if the Buckeyes are stagnant and trailing, then he should have been in against Purdue to at the very least stay sharp in game action.
If Pryor is the guy unless he gets hurt, then what the coaches have said the last few weeks isn't true.

Terrelle or Todd?

Interesting interview day already, and we're not done yet.
At Jim Tressel's press conference, the big news was that DE Lawrence Wilson is out for the year with an ACL injury to his left knee. It's a crying shame for Wilson, who broke his lower right leg in the 2007 opener and sat out the season. He will have one more year of eligibility left.
But the most intriguing topic was -- what else -- quarterbacks. Tressel said he had absolutely no plans to play Todd Boeckman, despite Terrelle Pryor's struggles last week. Clearly, he has made the decision that Pryor is his guy.
Then we spoke with TE Jake Ballard, who suggested it wouldn't be a bad idea to play two quarterbacks, that maybe Boeckman could come in and give the team some senior leadership and throw the ball downfield.
Now, Ballard was not beating his chest about it or anything -- he also correctly pointed out that what the offensive veterans should be doing is playing better and helping Pryor more than they did last week.
But make no mistake -- there is some potential for internal division on this team right now. Boeckman is well-liked, and I believe some guys feel he got a raw deal.
When Pryor plays well, all is OK. When Pryor holds the ball too long and relies too much on his legs, I think some veterans start to grumble.

Under pressure
Buckeyes are 4-0 with Pryor as starting QB and Tressel says he is sticking with him, even as stats diminish

Craig Holman | Dispatch
The Buckeyes want to see freshman QB Terrelle Pryor get rid of the ball more quickly, or just throw it away at times.

Despite the fact that Terrelle Pryor and the Ohio State offense hit rough seas last week -- and with one player suggesting a change -- it's clear that Todd Boeckman's ship has sailed. Coach Jim Tressel yesterday stood firmly behind Pryor, the freshman quarterback he installed as the starter ahead of Boeckman four weeks ago.
No, he didn't have any second thoughts about playing Pryor. No, he doesn't have a scenario in mind for playing Boeckman.
"Do I feel okay about what we've done and what we're doing? Yeah," Tressel said.
On one hand, that's not exactly controversial. Pryor is 4-0 as a starter and engineered the winning drive in the final minutes at Wisconsin on Oct. 4.
But the offense struggled mightily Saturday against Purdue, managing 222 yards against a poor defense and failing to score a touchdown in a 16-3 win (the TD came on a blocked punt).
Pryor has accounted for progressively fewer total yards in each of his starts: 205 against Troy, 167 against Minnesota, 164 at Wisconsin and 124 last week.
At times, he has held onto the ball too long or tried too hard to make a play. Despite being more mobile than Boeckman, Pryor has been sacked more times per game in his starts (2.5) than Boeckman was in his (2.3).
Tight end Jake Ballard suggested that Boeckman might give the struggling passing game a boost. The Buckeyes are ranked 108th in the nation in pass offense, and Pryor threw for only 97 yards Saturday.

Ballard's comments surprised me. I think it's imperative that a freshman QB have the support of his teammates. Of course a freshman QB will make mistakes, but it is not like Boeckman did not make a decent amount of mistakes himself. There are reasons that OSU decided to go with Pryor in favor of Boeckman, after all. IMO, the offense's poor performance is more a product of bad offensive playcalling and poor o-line performance than it is Pyror's decision-making. It just seems a little short-sighted to be calling out Pyror just one week after he won the game for us on the road at Wisconsin.

Scout$--Buckeyes Debate Two-QB System

Same quotes as earlier articles..various players discussing TB getting some snaps

Yeah...this is unfortunate. You have the upper-class vs. newcomers.

When I was at FSU, Chris Rix and Adrien McPherson divided the team, and it seemed to be a racial seperation amongst the team. It got to the point that Darnell Dockett about choked out a teammate during half-time of a game.

Not to say OSU will or is experiencing the same magnitude of issues, but it sounds as if there is some resentment in the way Todd has been treated. Unfair or not, it makes me question how hard some of the seniors are playing for Terrelle.

If some of Todds teamates are upset with his demotion they could've prevented it by protecting him better getting open or shuttting down the other team on D. It is somewhat unfair but the season and program can't put a another player ahead of another based on sentiment...Todd is a good person and teamate that is why he is a captain..for the good of the team I would like to see him step-up and put an end to any fracture hat there might be..he is only one play away from seeing the field. If this QB situation is holding this team back I am totally disappointed. It reminds me HS players who quit the team because they don't like the coach then a few years later they regret not playing. I don't want this team getting together in 10 years and regretting that this QB thing pevented them from reaching their goals.

link?

as for the comments from the players, this bothers me greatly. it doesn't take much more than common sense to know not to call out your freshman QB in public like that unless you are trying to start something. i don't like where this is going. like someone else said above, it seems like its a seniors v the other guys kind of thing going on.

Once a star, now Boeckman doesn't play
By RUSTY MILLER

Published October 15, 2008 at 12:52 p.m.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) _ Todd Boeckman is trying hard to take the high road.

The sixth-year senior is clearly heartbroken and humiliated that he no longer has a role other than non-playing captain on the No. 12 Ohio State football team. A star a year ago who was first team All-Big Ten at quarterback, he now stands on the sideline wondering what went wrong.

"I guess this hasn't worked out the way I planned it," he said on Tuesday night. "But if we're still winning, I'm all for it."

Four games into the season, after the offensive line had a sieve-like game in a 35-3 rout at then-No. 1 Southern California and Boeckman had to run for his life all night, coach Jim Tressel benched him and replaced him with true freshman Terrelle Pryor.

Boeckman was not told about the decision. He noticed he was getting fewer snaps in practice leading into the game against Troy, but neither Tressel nor any of the other coaches ever sat down with him and discussed the situation until a week or so later.

lots of excuses, some overreactors some underreactors.

this team got its ass kicked. cant get up for a d2 team, what do you think that says about the kids?

this team hasnt played defense, hasnt rebounded hasnt hustled in their two other public appearances. tom izzo is not allowing his team in the lockerroom as they dont deserve it.

matta has stressed since the first practice this isnt a very good team, not due to talent, due to attention to detail in effort.

lets be honest with ourselves, this game doesnt count. matta didnt approach it that way, the team half assed their way through both exhibition games with minimal effort and minimal charecter, no sense of urgency and no competitive composure.

i would have enjoyed being a fly on the wall, though i wouldnt want to be a running shoe this week with the pounding that is likely to go out.

long story short, i know a few coaches who after a game like that would have had the team mortified.

story time: once a long long time ago, when shorts were short and coaches were real hard asses i knew a team that played awful uninspired ball in a early season game. this team had a big game coming up in week, the team took the "cupcake" easily and played awful losing the game. this team on the eve of big game was told by their coaches to celebrate the big game new unis had been purchased. said team, with short shorts showed up on game day to the game to play, when they arrived they prepared for the game as normal as the game approached the coach came out of the lockerroom with a large box. the coach sat down on a chair in front of the chalk board and opened the box. the box was opened and out came some "uniforms" these "uniforms" were nothing more than basic reversible practice jerseys that smelled awful, coach who alwyas called us by name began to shout "10, 37" etc as he tossed out these raggied worn out practice uniforms. a couple of kids held these things stunned, until one kid who finally raised his voice "coach i thought we were getting brand new uniforms for this big game" coach came back "son, you dont deserve to wear your 'old' unifrorms that players before you laid the tradition in, i am doing each and everyone of you a favor but giving you uniforms that dont have your family names on them, so you wont embrass your families again with another [censored] poor effort" coach got up and walked out. not really knowing what to do we looked around, assemebled what we had for uniforms and broke down as a team. words that are not family approp were spoken and the team [censored]ed as all get out left the lockerroom. the gym was full, the band blared and the doors broke open as the entire school, family friends the community waited in anticipation to see the new uniforms. we ran out onto the floor and the band stopped playing, the noise stopped the clapping faded out and it was so awkward words couldnt describe it. later down the road i asked coach one time as he was getting older why he took that approach and i was told that he had tried to motivate us by screamiing, yelling, running us. he had tried to point out how we had played without effort, without courage and without desire. he told me how during that week between games he tried everything he could think of. he told me how us young blockhead kids wouldnt take, he tried to explain to us how with lack of effort, desire and passion had let out team down, each other down, the school down, the community down, how in short words had made an ass of ourselves with our simple inability to play with pride. he told me he spent sleepless nights thinking of a way, and that this came to him. i still remember that night, we came out and shot the ball awfully, but we played defense, rebounded and hustled every damn ball. we kept it close all night, as halftime approached we got the ball, the ball was brought over the time line, a guard called a time out. we all huddled up, coach never got off the bench, he looked at us. long hard stare, to this day i swear if i didnt know timeouts were only a minute id tell you it was two hours or more before he got up, "boys, have you decided to play" the team responded "yes sir" he came back and said "who are you playing for" answers were sprinkeled "the school, the community, coach, our families, etc" coach looked us all in the eyes and one by one scanned us, "i dont give a damn about those sons of a bitches, if you dont play with pride in your own work, pride in you game, pride in your effort how can you say you are playing for each other, nobody outside of this huddle matters, it is team game, each one of you is an individual piece that functions as a cog in machine that creates synergies greater than the pieces if each person plays greater than themselves" coach looked around and in his way of sliding john wooden in "If you're not making mistakes, then you're not doing anything. I'm positive that a doer makes mistakes."

that night i learned a very valuable life lesson, one that some of you reading that story will grasp in whole, others of you will say what the hell is this loony man speaking of, some will fall in between. those who understand it will understand, some people it will seep in, others it will be a seed planted to one day reflect on, others may never get it...
