UConn Game Notes w/Depth Chart

I've bolded people I think would possibly see the field for The Bucks. That's ten players off their entire roster that might actually get on the field here. The only that I could see challenging for a starting spot would be Schilling (I see him/Browning as a wash) and Martin might start at DT here. The rest would be reserves. Tater would possibly win a backup spot here. That is incredible. Remember when there used to be relative parity between these two teams?

Looking at that defense...oofah. Those linebackers and defensive backfield are putrid. :slappy:I wouldn't want one of their runningbacks either. Who there looks like a legit threat? V. Smith could be a decent change of pace jitterbug but is too small to carry the load. Shart is shit. Toussaint may be decent, but cannot get healthy. Cox may be a decent big back but is hardly a gamebreaker. They better hope shoelaces can actually perform against a real defense (we won't know for a while because UCONNs D is pretty bad) and that tater has improved his decision making because I'm not convinced that gaggle of RBs is anything more than average. I certainly don't see a Slaton there nor even a Minor...

mgoblog's take on the depth chart:

UConn Game Notes w/Depth Chart

with comments:

Gardner. You've probably already been bombarded by this fact on twitter, but Rodriguez specifically stated that freshmen on the two-deep are not going to redshirt this season, which includes Devin Gardner. Grumble.
Total waste not redshirting Devin IMO. Instead of him getting 3-4 years as a starter, he basically wastes a season behind two qbs who figure to rotate. If dickrod was smart, he's only use him if one or both of shoelaces/tater implode, but he seems intent on getting him on the field. Of course decommits/defections/academic casualties have left them without anybody else behind those two.

Carvin Johnson's audition at spur in the Beanie Bowl went well enough that he is the starter, no OR, there. This site's prediction that he'd outperform his recruiting rankings more than anyone else is moving along smoothly, but the secondary just got a tiny bit less experienced? or did it? More in the secondary preview dropping later today.
Carvin may be a legit diamond in the rough (*** guy), but doesn't change the fact that he's a true frosh, and I don't think he was an early enrollee (correct me if I'm wrong here). It's unreal how many freshman they're relying on in dickrod's third year...

James Rogers is, at least temporarily, a starting corner.
This is a former lightly regarded WR recruit who moved to DB yet couldn't get on the field despite how dire the situation was last season. :slappy:Even if one of the frosh beat him out, they'e in baaaad shape. Talbot and Avery seem to be ahead of the more highly rated Cullen Christian per scUM insiders. They're both puny *** guys who would redshirt at probably 90% of other programs arund the country. Christian would too. Teric Jones, who had been in the mix, has apparently moved back to RB (his 3rd position change in just over a year, which makes me wonder if Toussaint isn't pretty banged up and/or they aren't that optimistic about Shart getting his academic clearance.

Should we start getting worried about:
  • Vlad Emilien: behind a walk-on after a year and a half (he enrolled early).
  • Anthony LaLota: behind Steve Watson, also after a year and a half.
  • Will Campbell: behind perpetual non-entity Adam Patterson, a guy who moved positions this spring.
Pretty bad for Vlad if he cannot crack that rotation after a year plus on campus. Injury still lingering or not. A lot of recruiting pundits said both LaLota and Campbell would be better served as college OL. LaLota was trumpeted as a big recruiting victory two summers ago for dickrod, but we've heard next to nothing about him. Campbell looked incredibly raw last year and now it appears some are questioning his motor. They need him to step up IMO. Him being behind a schlub like Patterson isn't good at this point.

It's incredible how up in the air so much of this is going into dickrod's third year. For all the blubbering that has come about how well he has supposedly recruited, it's just all bullshit for them to have to rely on so much unproven talent and to be so thin at so many positions. I still think they get off to a decent start against some bad teams as their offensive line (the strength of the team, IMO) may allow them to produce some points against bad defensive teams, but I fully expect them to collapse once they reach the meat of their schedule again. I do think they'll narrowly beat UConn (who also has a putrid defense). NoD is a tossup to me, but if their defense has improved a little bit, I think Brian Kelly's offense will chew them up. They'll blow out UMass and probably BGSU. Indiana's passing attack might make that game pretty tough on them. MSU has an offense that could also be troublesome and if Sparty can get some bounces, I have a tough time seeing that as anything more than a tossup. Iowa's defense may be just enough to contain them and if Stanzi can start picking on their weak back seven, no way they win that one. At PSU is interesting because PSU doesn't appear to have a QB. Illinois should be awful, bt they've lost to back-toback awful Illini teams. Purdue is another bad matchup if Marve is anything more than decent. Wisconsin should eat them alive and The Game could get ugly.

Best case scenario, in my mind, is 7-5. 6-6 seems likely to me. Oddly enough, I think their season hinges on IU. If Chappel and the Indiana offense is enough to knock them off, they could end up in a tailspin and being staring at an absolute disasterous 3-9 or 4-8 type season. It's just unbelievable how much they've fallen. I never once thought dickrod was going to turn them into a power, but I thought when he was hired he'd at least get results similar to Carr. Definately by the third season...

Since when has Moundros been on defense?
Seriously, this is the best looking depth chart since Rich has got here. I'm pretty encouraged about it.
Also: There is nothing wrong with a true sophomore being behind fifth and fourth year players on the opening depth chart of the season.
I'm still going to let some games get played before making sense of the who, what, why and bust of this news release.

Wow. That says a lot. Anybody that can look at that defensive depth chart (secondary in particular) and be "encouraged" is either drinking some serious blue koolaid or plum dumb.

If I had to imagine a comparable defensive scenario, it would look something like this:

DE Wilson*
DT Goebel
DE Barrow*
LEO Newsome

STAR Hagen
LB Mark Johnson*
LB Curtis Terry*

CB Gambrell**
FS Wood
SS Antonio Smith***
CB Roby

* - as upperclassmen, obviously warped to this squad
** - add a yr to make him a true frosh
*** - as a second yr contributor, still better suited to special teams than db

Instead, almost all of those guys would not make the two deep. Many of those young names have potential but like most frosh arent ready for anything other than being overhauled by the football and conditioning staff.
Here's how I'd imagine it jwins, using current roster and stretching it in some positions because it's just wild what's going on up there:

DE Williams (I think Williams is a large upgrade over Van Bergen as a pass rusher, Van Bergen might edge him out vs. the run) WASH
DT Larimore (Martin is probably an upgrade for um here) DOWNGRADE
DE S. Thomas (as opposed to non descript Greg Banks or Sagesse) WASH-DOWNGRADE
LEO Bell (after playing regularly as a frosh) WASH

STAR Bryant (vice fellow true frosh Carvin Johnson) WASH
LB Zach Boren or Adam Homan (after moving from FB vice former um FB Moundros) WASH?
LB Jonathan Newsome (vice Mouton who has been awful for them thus far) WASH-DOWNGRADE (Mouton's experience)

CB Barnett (probably an upgrade over Floyd who was awful last year) UPGRADE
FS Wood (vice RS FR Gordon who apparently can't tackle...a trend amongst um safeties lately) UPGRADE
SS Ebner (after playing regularly last year vice fellow walk on Kovacs) WASH
CB Roby (vice true frosh Talbot/Avery/Christian assuming one of them eventually beats out non-entity Rogers (Evege?)) WASH

That takes some digging into the depth chart and I still see upgrades at several positions. Still, it is a frightening proposition as a starting defense, but I don't think this is much of a stretch from what um is working with right now. When you really sit down and look at it, their defense could be historically bad this year...after being historically bad last. One helping hand is that Juice isn't in Champaign to gash them anymore and PSU doesn't appear to have a QB, so that may help their overall numbers a little.

yada yada yada best looking depth chart in a while

He's probably right, though. Aside from missing Brandon Graham and having approximately -3 cornerbacks who can cover anyone, this depth chart is at least settled. The past two seasons, the depth chart has basically been randomly chosen from the roster because they had no returning starters to slot, and everyone else was a freshmen/redshirt/converted DT playing guard.

That being said, they're going to get murdered with that defense. Last year's defense sucked, but at least they had 1 semicompetent corner. This year, they're going to have both corners lined up 15 yards off the line of scrimmage to avoid getting burned deep and they'll have to push their safeties very high on passing downs. The middle of the field is going to be wide fucking open for RBs/TEs (same as last year - see the Iowa and Wisconsin games).

In general, this depth chart is more promising than last year, but the specific losses are crucial and damning. Any games they win will have scores like 49-42.

I think it's a no contest, though prone to fumbles and interceptions, Tater and the human shoe lace proved themselves to be mobile. Even if they continue to throw to the wrong guys and put the ball on the ground, they'll still put some impressive numbers up. It's the defense that killed UM last year and is suspect again this year.
