From the official Aussie Open site--bits and pieces.

Nadal--
Heads to Melbourne Park looking for a "Rafa Slam" after winning last year's French Open, Wimbledon and U.S. Open. That would take his Grand Slam total to 10. The Spaniard is aiming to be the first man since Rod Laver to hold all four Grand Slam trophies at once, although it won't be a true Grand Slam _ Laver won all four in a calendar year in 1969. Got 2011 off to a slow start by losing in the Qatar Open semifinals to Nikolay Davydenko, and then had his first practice cut short by rain in Melbourne last week.

RFed--
At last year's Australian Open, his 41st straight Grand Slam tournament, he became the fifth man after Jack Crawford, Ken Rosewall, Roy Emerson and Andre Agassi in the tournament's history to win four titles and first since Agassi in 2003. Started his 2011 campaign by winning the Qatar Open without dropping a set and becoming the first three-time winner in Doha following titles in 2005 and 2006. .

The Djoker--
Finished last year No. 3 for fourth year in a row, winning two titles, reaching quarterfinals or better in all four Grand Slams for first time in a season, including a final. He also led Serbia to Davis Cup title while going 7-0 in singles. Returning to the scene of his only Grand Slam win in 2008.

Solderling--
Started this year off with a win at the Brisbane International, beating Andy Roddick in the final, giving him a boost going into the Australian Open, where he's performed abysmally.

Murray--
Murray is 0-2 in Grand Slam finals _ both losses to Roger Federer, at the 2008 U.S. Open and 2010 Australian Open _ and he's trying to become the first British man to win a major championship since Fred Perry in 1936.

A Rod--
Considers the Australian Open his best chance of winning a second major to go with his 2003 U.S. Open, but has never gotten to the final here. Lost in the quarterfinals last year to Marin Cilic in five sets. A mild case of mononucleosis affected his play last year.

Del Potro--
As BB73 pointed out this 2009 US Open champion who missed last year with a wrist injury is unseeded but placed in the top half of the draw. He is poised to meet Murray in the fourth round. Reports suggest that he is back, healthy and ready to challenge for the championship.

Although Fed did struggle in the 2nd round, Simon was a former #6 (before an injury) that actually had a 2-0 record against Federer. Roger rolled in round 3.

Cilic took out Isner 9-7 in the 5th set today - it looked like it might go a while after nobody was broken in sets 3, 4, and through 7-7 in the 5th. But Cilic beat him in a match that was a little over 4.5 hours, and then said he wasn't very tired after the match, since the points were short. He gets to face Rafa in the next round.

The top 8 seeds all made the round of 16. It should be an excellent second week on the men's side. Murray-Soderling could be a great quarter-final, they've both been rolling.

damn, Roddick is the 2nd night match, looks like I'll be waking up Sun morning to see if he wins or not, if he plays like he has, don't think he wins it

He's going to have to serve great. He's going to lose most of the rallies because Wawrinka has a real kickass backhand.

anyone else sick of that ESPN commercial with the Bryan Bros? One of the worst commercials i've seen in a while

It sucks.

Anyone else a huge Monfils fan? Wish he could get it together mentally. Super exciting player. French is his tourney, not Aussie. Plus, Wawrinka is on fire right now.

Soderling upset. Murray and Ferrer cruised. Hope when i wake up that Nadal lost.

Agree about Monfils, he just seems like the best athlete on tour!

Wawrinka runs into Fed in the quarters and it will be a tough grueling match. Wawrinka just looks like a bulldog on the court.
Solderling seems to have some endurance issues and ran into a newbie, nice to see one of those on the ATP tour.
Re. Nadal, just stay in bed, he is getting coached up both on the court and also in personna in front of the microphone.
In the Nadal v. Cilic match, 3rd set tied at 3-3, Wawrinka's 2nd serve at 30-30, was played by Nadal, return was mis-hit barely wide, return was called out and nadal challenged. He challenged the serve call!
Umpire permitted the serve challenge and shotspot revealed the serve was barely out,
Cilic registered a mild protest of the serve challenge but noticably flustered dropped his serve on the breaker.
Probably would not have mattered in the scope of the match, but seems like that umpire set a new precedent for permissible time lapse before challenges.

Yeah, that challenge was BS. Not just because of the time lag, but Nadal's return hit out before Nadal challenged - which is why it definitely should not have been allowed.

After the match, Rafa said that it was the first time he felt fine physically - so he may be over that bug that was nagging him.

Berdych-Djokovic might be a classic in the quarters. The Djoker has been rolling, but in his last match Berdych was pounding the ball as usual, but had only 1 unforced error in each of his last two sets. That was impressive.

Semis of Nadal-Murray and Federer-Djokovic would be some great battles. I think Federer will be better off facing Djokovic instead of Berdych, who could just outhit Fed.
