2011 SEC Football Discussion

I dunno. I think if some scUMmer poisoned all the Buckeye trees in the Buckeye Grove we'd be pretty [censored]ed.

Just sayin'

Sure. The overreaction from some in the media is beyond absurd though. If the Buckeye Grove trees were killed off, I'd be pissed for a little while. I wouldn't pretend it were the worst or most cynical thing ever associated with college football fanaticism though. New trees would be planted, and the legacies they represented would remain intact throughout, as strong as ever.

I don't know how long the Buckeye Grove has been there...but from what I gather the Auburn trees have been a staple of the campus for over 100 years. Being an alumni who spent some of the best years of my life at OSU on campus, I would be livid if any of our landmarks were harmed.

But that's just me and my emotional investment to the campus...it would be a shame and very sad to see any of it dissapear.

The campus has changed immensely in the twelve years since I went to Ohio State as a freshman. The stadium is different, many of the academic buildings are different, the student union is different, High Street is different. Hell, even the Buckeye Grove has been relocated. I realize it's a different story when an outsider or or adversary brings about change through destruction, against your will though.

I guess I'm less attached to the things in and of themselves (which in the case of trees especially, are impermanent) and more attached to the ideas or traditions that they represent, which lousy outsiders can't touch at all.

I was there when an old landmark, Papa Joe's, burned down (that was a shitty night). High Street the way I knew it is all but gone. Things change, it happens.

Would I be upset if I heard a scummer chopped down the grove? Yeah, for a minute, but there is nothing I could do about it. Ohio State is my alma mater, and nothing will ever change my love for the school. :osu:

it's like that old Sesame Street song "which one of these is not like the other, not like the other, not like the other?"

As the gator pointed out, the Big Ten hasn't exactly been all that different on this front.

Big Ten (no black head coach in nearly a decade, never more than one in the conference at a time):

  • Dennis Green (Northwestern)
  • Francis Peay (Northwestern)
  • Bobby Williams (M*ch*g*n State)
SEC (no black head coaches until last decade, never more than one at a time at any given point):

  • Sylvester Croom (Mississippi State)
  • Joker Phillips (Kentucky)

More ticky-tack recruiting violations for UGA :shake: This time it's regarding the recruitment of 5 Star TB, Isiah Crowell.

Richt had the entire offense come out on the field and line up in a formation, except for one spot. The Tailback.

He asked Crowell to lineup at tailback and hoped that he could see him self in the backfield, playing with that group of players. The offense then huddled around him and encouraged him to sign with Georgia.

Per NCAA rules, this constitutes "simulated offensive schemes" and thus Richt can't call any recruits during open communication period in April. This sanction is imposed by the school, not the NCAA.
