2012 Defense Discussion

Don't see the logic of Hankins at D-end...

NEVER understood this either. We have 3 legit pass rushers this year in Simon, Spence, and Williams with 2 of them being pure speed rushers (spence/Williams). Why take away their potential speed off the edge for Hankins? Not a big fan of having DT's lining up out wide, just not enough speed.

Based on what we've heard from the DBs, we're not likely to see this. I think the staff has made it clear that press coverage is not something they like to do routinely.

This. Don't expect to see us jamming guys and playing man. We haven't really done that in recent history and based on preseason comments by the staff, we are actually going to be playing "off" even more than usual.

Agree with the other comments though about letting the pass rushers just get after it, stop playing a Dline where 3 of the 4 guys are really DTs.. and an argument could be made that Simon isn't even a pure DE..

The line isn't athletic enough when you have Simon-Hankins-Goebel-JT Moore manning the front.

I don't think that the thought is what are we going to do from a base defense standpoint, as much as, how will we adjust in game to what the offense is doing.

Watched game a second time.

Better than originally thought.

Not to pick on a player, but CJ Barnett probably accounted for 100-150 of the Miami passing yards. He was responsible for the two big first quarter plays (one he incorrectly passed on a receiver to Travis Howard, and second took a bad angle on what should have been a 10 yard gain and the play went for about 60).. Had another short pass where he also took a bad angle and it turned into a 10-15 yard gain.. Not his best game and he was the only one of the starting four DBs who didn't grade a winning performance.

Also, Corey Brown blitzed 2-3 times as the STAR and was totally clean but took poor angles and overran the QB.. Can't have that happen.. especially for a player who probably is fighting with others for that role

No middle pressure from our DT's except Washington..Sabino on the inside blitz once and he got there. I like a line of Nate and Spence outside and Simon,Washington inside against teams like Miami that throw 50 times a game.

i also watched the game a 2nd time well the defensive parts. Hankins was almost always double teamed. Simon did much better the 2nd half. Wash looks very impossing but i saw him get owned a few times by a bad spin or swim type move. Nate's first game in a while so. spence is fast but so far just a rusher. when he wasn't he appeared to be playing off containment. from what i could tell it was a combination of a little bit vanilla defensive scheme and a late getting back into search and destroy mode.

With all this supposed 'speed' we have at LB. I'd really like to see us in our base defense a bit more. Especially if Shazier & co are fast enough to cover ground against the pass. Crazy to ask I'm sure - but UCF had some success running power while we we're in the nickel. Can't be that stubborn against the likes of a Sparty or Wisky.

Agree, we seem to get worried about any set with 3 or more recievers and go auto nickel. I think that when Howard and Roby are in man they have been at their best, and we have plenty of speed with the LBs and safetys.

Look at it this way when UCF got their big plays with the pass they always threw at zone coverage, but in all a good game for the D with only 3 real bad plays.

I've noticed our D-ends dropping into coverage quite a bit more this year, and if thats going to be the case I'd love to see a guy like Jamal Marcus lined up at end sometime. Why not have a good rush guy who also has more experience in pass coverage? After Carp had such a good year his Senior year we've constantly tried to copy that and it's never been the same because the DE's have been DE's not converted LB's.

It'll never happen but if the DE is going to drop a lot why not get someone at DE that has the experience as a LB and also can rush the passer. Where as a strict DE will be lost in coverage, unlike the coverted LB.

I'd also love to see us more in base defense like ya'll have stated too. I think LB's are better blitz guys over nickle backs.

I don't think a true frosh who probably hasn't grasped the entire defense is ready all the sudden to play dual roles. There's a reason he's only on special teams and not in the 2 deep at LB. His time will come. Spence is barely ready to cover in space, and that's why he's used primarily as a pass rusher.

Ohio State v. UCF: Defensive Breakdown by Ross Fulton at 11W

This is a pretty good breakdown, imo.
That was a really good read and reason #79 that I am not employed as a DC.....heady stuff for a hack like me. Makes sense though and gets me more excited to see how the D comes together. We have VERY good coaches on both sides of the ball and the young talent on the D side is amazing so I don't see a lot of reason for concern.
