I have no problem with tOSU at #3.
This is the 23rd time that Ohio State has finished in the top 5 of the AP poll. However, it marks the first time in the 76-year history of the poll that the Buckeyes have finished #3.

The complete list of top-5 finishes by year:

Good post--a lot of interesting information there. What caught my eye is that Cooper only finished in the top 5 twice in his 13 years.

That's a head vs. heart issue. I don't literally want to see UM lose every game (Jax may disagree), because as you suggest, having a high-level rival is good for OSU. But at the same time, in the vast majority of individual games, I pull for a dose of UM humiliation. Those two views are admittedly somewhat contradictory, but I'm okay with that.

#3 AP rank earns Urban an extra $150K:

Also,

Fourteen AP voters had the Buckeyes ranked second, and 17 had them ranked third. One voter, Jon Wilner of the San Jose Mercury News, had Ohio State ranked 10th. He explained on his blog that the sanctions were not a factor in his voting but rather that 10th was ?all the Buckeyes deserve.?

Boo this man.

his blog said:
* I have been asked on numerous occasions if I?m ranking Ohio State far below its place in the AP poll because of the sanctions.
The answer: Nope. I?m ranking Ohio State far below its position in the AP poll because that?s all the Buckeyes deserve.
They shouldn?t be confused with the undefeated champion of the Big 12 or Pac-12.
The B1G was mediocre this season ? closer to the Big East than the SEC ? and when given a chance to show its stuff in non-conference play, tOSU struggled to beat Cal.

Overall, a splendid showing by the B1G, we could go undefeated next year and not make to the NCG.

Certainly possible, but going undefeated this season this year will help out tremendously. We will likely start out in the top five. It will be tough to start out in the top five, go undefeated and not end up in the top 2.

Still, the schedule next year is a concern. Style points will matter and there will be a razor thin margin of error.
