2013 Rivals/Scout/etc. National & Regional Rankings

This is about as close to "instant defense" as I could ever imagine. Plus a playmaker or two for Urb.

Mesmerized by the final ESPN 300 rankkings,I went into Scout recruiting rankings, looked up class rankings for DL/LB/DB, averaged them up, and found that for overall defense, tOSU, USC, and Florida are tied for the best defensive recruits, followed closely by TAMU, with tSUN coming in a distant next.

The only thing to drag down tOSU was LB, but as a consolation, it had the highest average number of STARS for LB.

I did not consider teams that were not in the top 15 of each of DL/LB/DB.

***Warning ESPN LINK Warning***

B1G recruits in latest ESPN 300

.../snip/...

Ohio State (15 recruits) and Michigan (14) dominate the ESPN 300, but Nebraska has made a nice push recently and Indiana will surprise some folks with multiple entries. Three Big Ten teams -- Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota -- don't have a recruit ranked in the ESPN 300.

The latest class rankings also are out. Ohio State holds steady at No. 4, while Michigan drops a spot to No. 7. Penn State holds steady at No. 24, while Nebraska moves up a spot to No. 26 and Wisconsin moves up two spots to No. 30. I see Penn State mentioned a couple of times on that list. It's amazing to me they can recruit in the midst of that turmoil. Some of the other big ten schools better get off their butt and hit the recruiting trail.

Two recruits really bump them up, the QB and TE. Both are high on most recruiting services and really inflates the class. After that, PSU has no other notable signees.

That and the fact that all their top recruits committed to them before the sanctions were handed down. Since then they've been battling a lot of MAC, CUSA, and Sun Belt teams for recruits.

Regardless of how many losses they have had the NCAA limits you to 25 "initial counters" per academic year. Per Scout they had a class of 20 in 2012. That means they could only have 5 early enrollments in this class. Of course, you must add to that any kids who were early enrollments from the 2012 class. I doubt there were 9.

In addition Scout has 4 kids in the top 100 still considering TAMU.
