2013 Schedule Discussion (Official Thread)

If it is 100% Urban's decision, then I don't think he'll sacrifice tradition for a night game.

UFM will do what he thinks will best improve his chances of winning. If he thinks night games give us an edge, he'll take as many night games as he can get...

This.

I am a traditionalist. But we now have the potential of playing UM in back to back weeks. In two years we may be playing conference games against Maryland and Rutgers. Things are changing and the starting time of The Game will be among the least of it.

Besides, perhaps the greatest version of The Game I ever attended finished under the lights in 2006.

If they can play night games in Wrigley they can play them in the Shoe. And if that means some future recruit in California doesn't have to sit down in front of the TV at 9:00 AM to watch - all the better.

I'd be surprised to see The Game played at night. Don't forget that in the south you NEED later games during the first part of the year due to the heat. Conversely, in the north it may be difficult to have night games late in the year, especially when The Game is (late November).

If we aren't undefeated heading into The Game then something has gone very very wrong.

The Game 2013;

Hoke's big chance to conjure a Bo/1969 moment.

Urbans chance to leave no doubt he has OSU on another level.

A realistic chance at a rematch in the B1G CCG.

As long as we beat the living shit out of them, I don't really care what time The Game is.

Dark alley @ 3 in the morning....tOSU 65 - scUM 3. I'll take it. I love tradition as much as the next Buckeye fan. I just don't see an issue having those traditions shown in prime time to a national audience. The way college football and television have changed...er...the way television has changed college football, having the Buckeyes vs. anyone be one of the first games done in the BIG seems way outdated. Also, considering UFM is at the helm, I'd much rather have the Buckeyes beating down an opponent be the last thing on the minds of young football players around the country as they get ready for bed and dream about their futures.

Yes, this is a chance to forever squash the momentum Hoke built during a down tOSU year, so recruits will be fully assured that tOSU is the program to choose. A double drumming would accomplish that.

I am disappointed in our schedule. We don't have a tier one school in our non-conference schedule. I would of liked to see a USC, Texas, Alabama, etc. type team in there. We need to challenge ourselves, and play the big boy ball.

I hear ya, but that's easier said than done. We just got off a home and home series with Miami, and have one coming up with Va Tech, Oklahoma, TCU, Oregon, and Texas. Not always possible to get that one marquee every year.

Those 'big boy' schools aren't scheduled at the beginning of the year. Cal was scheduled years ago when they were knocking off USC, etc. They also gave us all we could handle last year & I think they'll provide a good early test.

California is considered a marquee opponent as they were scheduled in the early 2000s. Just recognize that some of those big-time opponents are scheduled 8-10 years ahead of time. For an example, look at the BP thread called "Future Football Schedules" and you can see that Ohio State has scheduled VaTech, UNC, Tennessee, Georgia (since cancelled?) and Oklahoma in future seasons. Each one of those could be an early top-25 or even top-10 match-up (like Texas v. Ohio State in 2005/06) or they can be two unranked teams (like Miami v. Ohio State in 2011). It is a roll of the dice but they generally have to schedule those far in the future.
