2015-2016 Ohio State Men's Basketball (Official Thread)

I for one like the fact that Thad Matta is trying to do something (if he is trying to reconfigure the program, resulting in players transferring).

Right or Wrong, he's trying to do something.

And I was always taught "something" is better than nothing.

Agreed. More and more, this is looking like a playing time issue. And, to be frank, none of the players who are transferring showed that they deserved more playing time than they got. If anything, they got more than they deserved, IMO.

Who would have thought Jaquan Lyle is the one guy we don't have to worry about leaving??

How could this be a playing time issue? What non-mid major school would have given Mitchell half the time he received here? Harris and Giddens were big parts of the rotation what did they expect?

Thad needs to send every single person who is on the roster and has ideas of playing at Ohio State, to Coach Meyer's leadership course this summer. Every. Single. One.

There isnt an ounce of leadership on this team currently unless you count the effort and tenacity of Tate as leadership by example. What I don't like is there is no floor leader at the PG position. Thats hard to overcome.

I know this is already been posted under the Boals thread but Jake Diebler has decided to take an assistant coaching position at Vanderbilt where he will be an assistant to the coach he played for when he was at Valparaiso. With the Boals departure,, you would think that the logical progression would have been to take that position.. According to the following article he was not just a video coordinator but also helped in player development. Now Matta has 2 openings in his staff and has some have mentioned they will be critical hires with recruits looking at us.
More change to Thad Matta's staff: Ohio State video coordinator Jake Diebler gets assistant job at Vanderbilt

Opinions are like noses, everyone has one. Outsiders (like me), watch (or tape) what we can of tOSU basketball, and then watch when able. In my opinion (notice the opening lead), I believe that the freshmen felt they were entitled to more minutes than they got. At the same time, I also believe that Matta had 'the talk' with them after the season, and let them know what they had to do better with if they were going to GET more minutes, and the dots were not able to be connected. Grandstaff's father might have put it best - they wanted my son to rebound, play defense, pass, all things he doesn't do....kinda sums it up for me. Giddings was the biggest loss (in my rose tinted glasses), and he wouldn't last a half if he started, as he would foul out pretty quick. Loved his enthusiasm, but gotta play within yourself. Mickey was shakey at best, waaaay before he set foot on campus, and no one has really said why he lost 10 (?) games because was ineligible. He did several things well, passing and court sense, but really not at the B10 (much less tOSU) level. Hence his recruitment to Santa Barbara. The Gauchos field a pretty nice team, but not the level of Pac10 schools. These kids have been coddled all their life, told how their [Mark May] doesn't stink, and when they get to the college level, their weaknesses outweigh their strengths. So they look for greener pastures. Anybody out there ever transfer schools because of a major switch, and where you were isn't the best school for the new major? Kinda similar. Anyway, the sun will come up tomorrow, and tOSU will field a competitive basketball team. Jent might be the 'heir apparent' to Thad, but his resume has more holes than accomplishments. We'll see. I hope he'll enjoy the college game, and recruit well. Go Bucks!

Thad Matta's downfall began with a top-five recruiting class that didn't deliver

Entire article: https://sports.yahoo.com/news/thad-...ll-fated-2015-recruiting-class-022510936.html

Just wondered what Thad's top 5 recruiting class was up to these days:

Daniel Giddens (Alabama): https://sports.yahoo.com/ncaab/players/131270/

Mickey Mitchell (Arizona State): https://sports.yahoo.com/ncaab/players/131268/

AJ Harris (New Mexico State): https://sports.yahoo.com/ncaab/players/131271/

Austin Grandstaff (DePaul): https://sports.yahoo.com/ncaab/players/131269/

Jaquan Lyle (New Mexico): sitting out this year

Overall it looks like they aren't doing much better at their new school than they did at Ohio State. Basically I'll say the first 4 (above) were grossly overrated. Lyle (at least) could put up some points; however, (apparently) he wasn't a "good fit" for Ohio State.
