OHIO STATE BASKETBALL RANKED NO. 13 IN KENPOM'S PRESEASON RATINGS

One preseason metric is rather high on Ohio State's basketball team this season.

Ken Pomeroy, founder and creator of KenPom.com's advanced statistical ratings, has the Buckeyes ranked No. 13 on his preseason list. That's probably a little surprising to some considering Ohio State missed the NCAA tournament a season ago for the first time since 2008.

Wisconsin is the only Big Ten team ranked ahead of Ohio State in Pomeroy's preseason rankings. The Badgers come in at No. 8. Michigan State (No. 14), Purdue (No. 15) and Indiana (No. 16) give the conference five schools ranked in the Top 20.

OK, who the hell is KenPom?

Kens numbers start to make sense about half way through the season. His pre-season numbers begin with assumptions about how good incoming players will be and how much improvement returnees will make, but a couple of months into the season, all those numbers are gone and he will be using actual performance indicators from this season.

I'm not sure how much having the top 6 back really means when it was from a team that was an NIT team (and didnt go deep into the NIT) without any seemingly significant impact newcomer additions.

Hopefully everyone at least got a little bit better and the chemistry improves though. We shall see. Youd like to think they will at least be able to reach the big dance this year though

I think we can reasonably expect/hope for CJ Jackson to be an impact addition, and it sounds like Potter will be in the mix too... But I'm not putting much stock in a statistical preseason projection.

I really don't know what to expect from CJ. Most of the talk seems to be that he is a capable PG, but he played mostly off the ball last year. Can he be a successful PG at this level? I have no idea.

I suspect our reserves will be a bit better offensively than the guys that transferred. If Kams role is expanded and Tate, KBD and Loving average 30 mpg between them (they were at 31.5 last year), then the only new guys that are going to get much time are CJ who has to play as the backup PG and presumably Potter if he beats out Bell as the backup C. I think we get more scoring out of those two than we did out of AJ and DG, but the defense might not be as good. I guess we'll start to find out in a few weeks when the season kicks off.

From what limited tape that is out there for CJ (I watched his juco team play in some type of championship game) he played off the ball a lot but he he also was the guard who brought the ball up the court and set up the play before going off the ball if that makes since. He isn't a flashy dribbler but he has a good handle and doesn't seem prone to turning the ball over, has quick hands and instincts when playing in the lanes defensively, didn't get to see much man to man. He can shoot it at a high clip not the prettiest form but has a quick release, also seemed to be vocal on the court making sure everyone was giving good effort and were where they were supposed to be on the floor, he is and unselfish scorer, has spots on the floor that he likes and knows he can get his when he has to, I think he will be a solid contributor in season 1, he and Micah Potter are going to surprise some people, Derek Funderburke is a freak athlete who I can see impacting certain games by bringing his bouncy energy off the bench I'm excited to see this year's team I like the pieces we have.

Bear in mind, though, that part of why we ended up in the NIT was how bad we were early in the season (and that we couldn't figure out how to beat MSU late in the season). While the team did not improve by leaps and bounds it did improve enough to go 11-7 in the B1G and beat a couple tourney teams like Michigan (who, frankly, was just luckier than us as far as making the Dance) and Iowa (who we beat without Tate). Yes, we didn't go far in the NIT, but we lost without Tate and KBD, two of our best all-around players in terms of scoring, rebounding, and D.

In this case the KenPom model is ranking what we bring back relative to what other teams' bring back and it likes what it sees. Now, yes, wig is right, his model is poor in terms of accounting for how other teams can improve from leaps in play of returnees, new players, new team make-up, etc. It doesn't weight that stuff as heavily, partly because there's no good way to do that and so I think Ken just goes without trying to account for it too much since most players don't improve super dramatically in one off-season and most new players aren't instant impact types. But that stuff will happen for various teams. So OSU has got the dependable measures that Ken's model likes but not the X-factors that some other teams will have. Though I do think CJ and Potter will contribute some and perhaps will contribute more overall positive than, say, AJ and Giddens did last season.

Buckeye Basketball Will Be Changed This Season

LylePassing.jpg

If you're a person who likes change you're going to be entertained by the Buckeye basketball team this year.

The changes started at the end of last season when there was a mass exodus of players that created an immediate change in the roster.

That's just the obvious start when it comes to change.

Speaking with media members Thursday, junior forward Jae'Sean Tate and first-year assistant coach Chris Jent talked about other changes you can expect in Buckeye basketball this season. For starters, the style of play is going to be different.

"We’re going to definitely change the pace that we play at. We’re trying to get out and run more this year," said Tate.

"Last year we kind of walked the ball up the court."

Jent, whose coaching responsibility is concerned primarily with the offensive end of the court, went into detail.

"I think we all as a coaching staff, we all want to play fast," said Jent.

"Coach (Matta) wants to score 90 points a game, we understand that. For this group, what’s the best way to try and do it? That’s what’s different.

"We understand that our forwards are going to be our rebounders, so lets allow them to push and lets run ahead of that push, so rather than having that point guard coming back to the ball, we want to be aggressive and everyone run up the floor, no one coming back to the basketball unless a non-ball handler rebounds the ball.

"We’ve got a lot of skilled guys out there, a lot of equal parts, and we just felt as though what we’re doing now is going to help us with our pace up the floor."

If you followed the Buckeyes last season you remember some really ugly games. At times the Buckeyes simply stood around on the offensive end of the court wondering what to do next. The issue last season was a group of players who didn't know what to do if a play broke down. When things went bad they literally stood around wondering what to do next. The Buckeyes hope to end that for good this year.

"Coach Jent coming back, he is making sure that when a play doesn’t work or breaks down that we don’t have that stagnant standing (like last year)," said Tate.

"We go into like an automatic action. That’s what we’ve been working on. Just being basketball players, not robots."

apparently, ohio state had a scrimmage against ohio u yesterday. they trailed throughout and lost by 9.

it would be foolish to put much stock into scrimmage performances, but this is certainly not the kind of performance that bolsters confidence.

Hmmm....The Bobcats have a nice roster and should provide a good workout for the good guys, but ouch, not the kind of report I want to be hearing either. OU is probably a tournament team and has quite a few borderline B1G players (Kaminski, Jaaron Simmons of Alter, 6'9" Antonio Campbell, Dartis from Nerk), but I would be happier if you didn't mention that "trailed throughout" part. I'll be interested to hear what comes out of it.
