2016-2017 Ohio State Men's Basketball (Official Thread)

I'm gonna say there's a good chance Indiana craters this season, for several reasons:

1. Crean is wildly inconsistent as a coach and has a hard time stringing together multiple ballroom celebrations without a turd in the punchbowl here and there. He's due for a turd this year.
2. Yogi was phenomenal and maybe didn't get enough credit for how good he was last year, including on defense. I don't think they have a good replacement, and that is a really important position for them. Clappy doesn't coach his players how to avoid turnovers, but Yogi figured it out on his own. Doubt he has that guy who can shoot, involve others, go up-tempo, and avoid turnovers despite his coach this year.
3. IU was the third best team in the B1G last year according to T-rank and kenpom, so they were lucky to finish in first by two games last year. For example, IU got to play Iowa after their late season swoon, after Iowa had stuck Purdue and MSU with two losses each at the beginning of the year. Huge scheduling break last year for IU. Flip Iowa's season around back to front and IU loses at Iowa and Purdue and MSU win two extra.
4. They have a more difficult B1G schedule this year, and end with 4/6 on the road.
5. They actually got better after Blackmon got injured last year, and his coming back is subtraction by addition.

I think this is the main reason Indiana will fall down this season. I do not think that they will "crater" as you suggest but I do not see them being in the top 3 of the conference. Yogi was the heart and soul of that team last year and they have absolutely no one to duplicate what he brought to that team last year.

Certainly PG is the question for their team, but they have guys that create shots and get their own without a PG doing it for them. Bryant is probably the best post player in the conference. Anunoby was already better than Troy Williams at the end of the year and if reports are somewhat correct, we could be looking at the next Victor O. only 4 inches taller. I agree that Blackmon could be boom or bust.

The comment made though was about betting on teams to win the title based on current odds. I don't expect that they will win the tourney, but with their individual talent, I think they have reasonable odds. Personally, I don't think any B1G team will win the title and pretty good chance there won't be any FF teams either.

WHAT WE LEARNED FROM OHIO STATE'S 85-67 EXHIBITION VICTORY OVER WALSH

76333_h.JPG,qitok=66m9Z5qu.pagespeed.ce.UEgjgwTHCj.jpg

Ohio State returned to the hardwood Sunday for an exhibition against Walsh. Thanks to a 16-3 run early in the second half, the Buckeyes came away with a 85-67 victory.

Sophomore point guard JaQuan Lyle led the way with 14 points and six rebounds as Ohio State put four players in double figures. Keita Bates-Diop finished with 12 points, Kam Williams scored 11 and Jae'Sean Tate had 10 points and four boards.

It was a first half that featured plenty of whistles as the two teams combined for 28 fouls in the first 20 minutes. The Buckeyes held a 40-32 edge at the break behind 12 first-half points from Lyle and nine from Bates-Diop.

Here are some things we learned from Ohio State's victory against the Cavaliers.

1. THE STARTERS
Ohio State returned all five starters from last year's team so many figured the Buckeyes would have the same starting five for this season. However, head coach Thad Matta made one change ahead of Sunday's exhibition.

True freshman Micah Potter started at center in place of Trevor Thompson. Potter joined Lyle, Tate, Bates-Diop and Marc Loving in the first unit.

Potter has earned praise throughout the summer and preseason practice from coaches and fellow players for his offensive capabilities and work ethic. Against Walsh, he finished with six points and five rebounds in 16 minutes.

2. THIS TEAM HAS BODIES
Matta played all 11 scholarship players in the first half of the game and it appears as if playing time is there for the taking.

Thompson and Kam Williams were the first two off the bench for the Buckeyes and sophomore transfer C.J. Jackson soon followed. Andre Wesson and Derek Funderburk also provide Ohio State with some depth on the wing and David Bell played solid minutes at the center position as both Potter and Thompson were saddled with foul trouble in the first half.

First Glimpse, So Far So Good

Hoopshuddle.jpg

We got our first glimpse of the Buckeyes in the Walsh exhibition. We'd tell you all about how good and how bad the Bucks are, but 40 minutes of exhibition basketball is just not enough to really know much about a team. Still, there are some first impressions, but they are just that, first impressions. For what it's worth, here they are.

1) Thad found some help in his new comers.

Freshman Micah Potter was a surprise starter at center beating out returners Trevor Thompson and David Bell for that honor. His line score wasn't particularly impressive, but we'll chalk that up to first-game jitters. Potter is well put together and runs well for a big man. He's athletic and can handle the basketball. The "book" on him is that he can stretch the floor as a three-point shooter.

The Buckeyes were looking for help at point guard and came up with JUCO transfer C. J. Jackson. Jackson impressed immediately. Yes, we know it was just an exhibition game, but Jackson seemed to supply exactly what the Buckeyes have been lacking in this outing giving rise to hope for the OSU back court. He played just 16 minutes but led the Buckeyes with four steals and also led in the assist category with six helpers. He did all that with no turnovers. He was two for four from the field with a three-pointer. The remaining first-year Buckeyes, Derek Funderburk and Andre Wesson, also got double-digit minutes and each had their moments. Wesson tied for the team-high in rebounds with six in 13 minutes of play. Funderburk had five rebounds in 12 minutes. If those two can do some of the dirty work under the glass they will be welcome additions.

2) The scoring is probably going to come from the returners.

Jae'Sean Tate, Keita Bates-Diop, JaQuan Lyle and Kam Williams all scored in double figures to lead OSU's scoring. All four played like solid veterans. The lone troublesome stat in that group of four was a team-high four turnovers by Lyle at point guard. Turnovers were an issue with him last year. The hope is that a year of experience will help him with that, but this game didn't indicate that. It's just one game, not much of a sample really, but it's something that bears watching as the season evolves. Lyle also finished with zero assists, though he scored a team-high 14 points and grabbed six rebounds.

2016-17 SEASON PREVIEW: WHERE DOES OHIO STATE FIT INTO THE BIG TEN PICTURE?

76325_h.jpg,qitok=TNPOCBM3.pagespeed.ce.AbGlJDH5tY.jpg

Last season, Ohio State became the first team in Big Ten history to win 11 league games and not make the NCAA tournament.

And, to be honest, the Buckeyes probably didn't deserve to make it. They had a couple of key non-conference losses that hurt their resume at the end of the season, and the large majority of their Big Ten wins were against teams that finished in the bottom third of the league.

With an 11-7 league record, Ohio State was the No. 7 seed in the Big Ten tournament — the lowest in Thad Matta's tenure as head coach. In what's one of college basketball's strongest conferences year in and year out, the Buckeyes will certainly hope to improve on that mark for the 2016-17 campaign.

This year, the Big Ten figures to be a little more top heavy than previous seasons with three favorites to end the year as league champion. What follows is a breakdown of what to watch for in the Big Ten this season, and where Ohio State figures into the picture.

THE FAVORITES
Indiana won the league last year with a 15-3 record in Big Ten play and the Hoosiers are loaded again this season despite losing all-everything point guard Yogi Ferrell. Thomas Bryant and OG Anunoby return to lead the way and Indiana also welcomes back James Blackmon Jr., who missed most of last season with an injury.

But while the Hoosiers are the defending champions, it's Wisconsin that seems to be the top contender to claim this season's crown. The Badgers are coming off a season in which they made the Sweet 16 and return nearly everybody — including preseason Big Ten Player of the Year, Nigel Hayes. Hayes, Bronson Koenig and Ethan Happ give the Badgers as good a trio as you'll find in the league.

The final preseason favorite is Michigan State. The Spartans lost a ton of talent — Denzel Valentine, Bryn Forbes and others — and this is a completely different team than Tom Izzo has really ever had, but there is a ridiculously talented freshman class in East Lansing that could make up for some inexperience. Miles Bridges, Josh Langford, Cassius Winston and Nick Ward were all top-40 prospects nationally.

Well, Ohio State only beat Walsh by 10 last year, so this is an improvement. They shot horribly from the FT line and let a small Walsh ball club equal them on rebounds. Seems like all the guys we need to score already have a nice rhythm, though, so I think overall the scrimmage is a positive. Potter starting looks legit, also. Maybe defense and free throws are our two weaknesses right now...and those can be improved more easily than other aspects of the game. This team probably has nine guys that deserve some playing time, so Jent's fast tempo offense can really work this year. Bell, Potter, and Thompson could get 20 each in some games if the match-ups call for it. Nice mix, but PG is still the odd duck.
