2016-2017 Ohio State Men's Basketball (Official Thread)

I think Lyle would be a better player if he never had Marc Loving and Amir Williams setting an example for him. He's contracted their half-assed approach to play and he'll pass it on to the next guy. It's become part of the culture in Matta's program. We all know how this is going to end. It's just a matter of when.
It'll end after they go 3-15 in the B1G next year. Not even sure I'll bother watching next year. It's gonna be brutal.

Just a brutal loss...won the whole game but not the score. This is just beyond frustrating, I don't know how in the hell we lost that game. Definitely just have to thank Thad for everything he has done and try to get Miller or someone else on board...this is as bad as it gets.

Lol errbody but Tate. Maybe Thompson, seems like he plays pretty hard to me. I really feel for Tate though, such a great player and so much heart, but errbody refuses to follow his lead.
Tate has some heart, I'll give him that. But he's a role player at best, and too often tries to take games into his own hands...which he just doesn't have the skill for. Didn't he have a 3 point, 6 turnover, 5 foul line against sparty? Ideally, on a decent team, he's a 15-18 mpg energy guy. But this is the roster Matta has constructed.

Who the else do you trust to take a game over? Lyle's probably the closest but the dude's such a head case that I cringe worse when he has the ball in his hands. At least Tate looks like he's wants to be there.

Making My Pitch as to What's Wrong with the OSU Basketball Program

17-01-31-MB-0109-FP.jpg

I haven’t seen every game that the Ohio State basketball team has played this year, but I’ve seen some of much of most of them. I don’t think I know less about the team because I haven’t watched every minute they’ve played, because every minute I’ve seen has been the same minute as the one before, so why would things be any different when I’m not watching them?

Everybody has their own ideas of what the problem is with the program and how much longer Thad Matta is going to be given to turn things around. To speak to the latter part, I think he’s safe for at least another year, if not more than that. This will be his first losing record in conference play as Ohio State’s head coach. If that’s enough to get him fired, then that’s pretty cold blooded on Gene Smith’s part.

Nobody is happy with the way things are going, and maybe Matta is no longer the guy to get this team out of the funk that it’s in, but he’ll at least be given the chance to keep from digging the hole deeper.

Honestly, I don’t see Matta as the problem with this team, though he is the architect of everything that we see right now, from players to coaches, so he is certainly to blame for bringing all of this together. I don’t know what he’s getting out of his assistants, but we can assume it should be more.

For me, the season falls on the players.

Yes, Matta is the one to blame because he went out and signed these relievers to long-term contracts, but those contracts aren’t going to go away by bringing in a new general manager.

I don’t believe the future is hopeless, though to call it “bright” would be an overstatement. Keita Bates-Diop should be able to step in for Marc Loving just fine, and I think Micah Potter has the mentality that this team is missing. He’s brash and confident and doesn’t care if he just missed a shot.

Will the Buckeyes lose a couple of players to Europe? Possibly, but can you really get upset about it?

I don’t know if Thad Matta can turn this around, and I don’t see a fix coming to turn this program into a national power any time soon. I do know, however, that he’s earned the right to at least have one more losing season in conference play before it’s time to go out and find somebody else to try and achieve all of the great things that Matta has accomplished in his 13 years of service to Ohio State.

The author acts like everything was fine until this season, which he blames on the players. It's six years of declining results. Six years.

Yep.

I read: I don't know what the exact problem is. I don't know if it's Matta. I don't know what the answer is. I don't know much of anything. This team isn't going to be competing nationally for a while. BUT because of what Thad Matta did over a half decade ago, we should endure this shit stain for a season or two more before actions are taken to fix the problems and that should be acceptable.

Okay...
