Tests find Rio 2016 competition waters filled with sewage

An analysis conducted by the Associated Press showed that the waters that will be used for swimming and boating competitions during next year’s Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro are contaminated with human feces, with the potential to cause severe illness.

The AP’s study showed high levels of viruses and bacteria from human sewage in Olympic and Paralympic venues. Some competitors who have trained in Rio have already gotten sick from swimming in the waters.

The study was conducted in four rounds, testing the bacteria in three of the venues slated to host Olympic events, and found high counts of active and infectious human adenoviruses.

If humans come into contact with infected water, it could cause explosive diarrhea and vomiting as well as other long-term problems.

And this is why you don't try and prop up "1st world" nations that are actually still developing by "rewarding" them with world sporting events like the Olympics and World Cup. True 1st world nations and cities often have a hard enough time absorbing the financing required, let alone what happens to the venues after the events (see Athens and Sydney), never mind the infrastructure required to host the spectators and athletes.

The rest of the world calls it pollution; however, Brazil undoubtedly calls it a "home field advantage".

Serious question, are we looking at a time in the near future when no cities apply for a Games because of the cost?

Probably not, because too many of the rich and powerful that make these kinds of decisions from the IOC to the governors of the state(s) and mayors of the city(ies) involved get even more powerful and rich off of the process of landing the games. It will take some serious change and noise to influence those decisions.

Wow...the Russian track and field team has been barred from the 2016 games. That's huge.

Russia’s track and field team is barred from competing in the Olympic Games this summer because of a far-reaching doping conspiracy, an extraordinary punishment without precedent in Olympics history.

The International Association of Athletics Federations, the governing body for track and field, announced the decision Friday, ruling in a unanimous vote that Russia had not done enough to restore global confidence in the integrity of its athletes.
