2016 tOSU Offense Discussion

I think the same flaw Urban had at Florida is rearing its head here: recruiting too many raw athletes to play receiver instead of pure receivers. The hit rate is too low. On the bright side, he's addressing it with players like Victor, Mack, Lindsey, and Grimes but in the meantime, we have amazing athletes who don't know how to be receivers which simply negates that athletic edge in the first place.

I was hard on the OL but they actually played well despite JT sipping margaritas in the pocket and predictable playcalling. It just unraveled in spectacular fashion at the end.
To be fair, there were quite a few misses at both the WR and the OL positions. 2013 was odd for OL, everybody chose someone else. Then we had guys like Quick and Kirk go elsewhere. But am really excited for Austin Mack, Binjamin Victor and the 2017 recruits. Hope we have enough room for the Ohio WR as well.

Regarding star rankings, the current group is pretty poorly rated by OSU standards. Now that doesn't explain everything away, but the passing game should look much better in 2018 if the next QB can spin it better in the exact same, limited passing scheme.
Went to NFL early:

WR #6 Marshall

True freshmen still adjusting:

WR #10 Victor (true frosh, very thin. Will be good with time, and S&C)

WR #6 Mack (true frosh hit the wall a bit)

Here is your WR core:

WR #9 Samuel

WR #24 Brown

WR #30 Clark

WR #43 McLaurin

RB #10 Wilson

RB #14 Campbell

Only one highly rated and coveted player on that list, if we're going by recruiting site rankings.

Injured:

WR #30 Dixon

WR #32 Hill

WR N-R Smith

Not playing:

WR #24 Stump

QB #5 Gibson

Other position:

WR #47 Hooker

WR #100 Alexander
WR Depth

2016 - WR 9, 24, 30, 43 ... RB 10, 14

2018 - WR 3, 6, 6, 10, (14?) RB 05, 14 QB 5

WR 3 Grimes
WR 6 Mack
WR 6 Lindsey
WR 10 Victor
WR 14 Harris?
QB 05 Gibson
RB 05 McCall
RB 14 Campbell

Regarding the O Line Im not as down on the Unit as others either, once I rewatched the game I saw that they did give JT time most of the game as you said @OregonBuckeye they just mostly unraveled in the end. As far as run blocking, well.... Penn St was mostly stacking the box so they were well aligned to stop the run if that's what was coming, however Prince did have a bad game and it seems his confidence has been shaken.... I heard Urban say that Branden Bowen was making a move weeks back, Maybe he was sending a message to Prince then idk. Im pretty confident that that the slobs will be well prepared going forward, what concerns me most is whether or not the Receivers are getting separation and JT finding them when they do.

What irritates me after thinking of things more is our concession of giving certain aspects of our offense up because they "schemed us"

The Jets Sweep the staple exterior constraint play for our offense has been abandoned. Did Mike Tyson give up his left hook because fighters knew it was coming? Much like that the Tyson analogy if you set up that left hook (Jet Sweep) then it'll work just as beautifully and just as well as it did day one.

Run some fake Jet Sweeps a few drives and get the defenders ignoring it and then pop it on them. I believe with Campbell and Brown our perimeter blocking is good so run the damn play.

If that play just doesn't work then why did the kid from Wisconsin get 70 yards or something like that?

I don't ever like hearing "well they took the play away" THAT'S THE COORDINATORS JOB to get them out of it. That's why we are struggling offensively because we are so painfully predictable! They knew they eliminated certain plays because we won't run them by the way they are formated so now they wait for the zone read, the option, or a deep throw.

Besides how much does our option work? Not at all and yet we still run it. Until our whole offense comes back which includes a daily dose of the Jet Sweep I will not believe we are fixed no matter how bad we beat NW.

What's going to puzzle me is we will probably beat NW by 35 by mauling them with our run game but we will throw for 4 scores with about 200 yards passing and we will all feel like it's fixed. Then we will stare at the numbers and realize 3 of the TDS were to running backs and still no one emerges as a true 2nd WR.

Where does KJ Hill fit into all of this? I thought I saw him on the field against PSU, but he seems to be forgotten. I still think we could have let them rush up field from the DE position and ran right underneath it. The propensity of the staff to ignore the middle of the field is a constant that I have noticed in the Meyer era as well. How do you not get our slots 1 on 1 with the LBs???

FOLLOWING LOSS TO PENN STATE, DON'T EXPECT OHIO STATE TO MAKE ANY WHOLESALE CHANGES

75814_h.jpg,qitok=aJT-6Yr-.pagespeed.ce.uZ_i4YHtfO.jpg

Let’s just get this out of the way now: Ohio State doesn’t plan to blow up its offense and start from scratch.

The Buckeyes struggled offensively Saturday in a 24-21 loss to Penn State. Urban Meyer knows as much. But if you were expecting there to be wholesale changes to the offense after the seventh game of the season, well, prepare to be a bit disappointed.

“It’s hard to put it on one thing,” Meyer said Monday during his weekly press conference. “We did not play very well in a couple of areas on offense. What do you do? You just identify it, work on it, make personnel changes if you have to and move on to the next game.”

There seem to be three big areas of concern in regards to Ohio State’s offense right now: the offensive line, the wide receivers’ ability to get open and the play calling. Meyer said Monday two of those three things won’t be changing.

On the offensive line, he said: “Conversations about any personnel changes usually go on today. I don’t foresee that, but we need to improve.”

Most notably, sophomore right tackle Isaiah Prince struggled in the loss to the Nittany Lions. As a whole, Ohio State gave up six sacks and 11 tackles for loss as the Penn State defensive line swarmed quarterback J.T. Barrett and the running game — particularly in the second half.

Meyer said right now there won’t be a change made at right tackle because, well, there simply isn’t another option. The Buckeyes lost Malcolm Pridgeon during fall camp to a knee injury and redshirt freshman Branden Bowen simply isn’t ready yet.

“There’s not someone right now to replace [Prince],” Meyer said. “He will be a fine player. He just needs to continue to grow because he’s played, at times, exceptional.”

WITH QUESTIONS LINGERING ABOUT PASSING GAME AFTER LOSS AT PENN STATE, URBAN MEYER WANTS MORE FROM WIDE RECEIVER

75811_h.jpg,qitok=DHKSeN0Q.pagespeed.ce.QBD6krW0tc.jpg

Urban Meyer doesn't want to keep talking about, even if you do.

Ohio State's head coach trying to move onto to the next game, a home one against Northwestern. Even though a loss to Penn State presented glaring issues with his team's passing attack, both in protection and a disconnect between quarterback J.T. Barrett and the wide receivers in the deeper part of the field.

“Bunch of players are hurting,” Ohio State's head coach said on Monday. “Bunch of coaches are hurting, and we're not—this is the most time I've spent on this today because this one is put to bed.

“You've got to move forward.”

I read that article, and what I feel is that Urban is not going to flat out say that he's going to change the scheme, he's not an idiot and he will make changes because recent offensive woes dictates that, he's just not going to throw anyone under the bus in the process.

i might be off base here but it sure feels like there is no rhyme or reason to our playcalls/offensive gameplan.....almost like someone playing Madden and just randomly calling plays out of the playbook. Nothing seems to be used to set anything else up. Samuel doesn't touch the ball at all the first 3-4 drives and then after he rips off the 70+ yard TD he touches the ball 2 times the rest of the game? shovel pass to Noah Brown on 3rd and long out of nowhere? just doesn't add up.

I know I may be the millionth person to say it but we see how much we miss Tom Herman with his hands on our offe se. We look lost offensively, there is no plan, we aren't setting up the defense for anything, we aren't exploiting teams weaknesses, we are out there running plays it seems.

Also, there is way too much talent in the WR room not to have ANY consistent production. Some of these guys have gotten more than enough chances, some not enough. Explore all players, you never know what you may have, some guys dont practice well but ball on game day, some dont look as pretty as others but get the job done.

Then don't put him out on an island with a good defensive end. Turn another OL into a tight end and put him next to Prince, especially when Prince is on the wide side of the field.

Gotta expect some growing pains after you lose the NFL's best rookie RB and best rookie WR...

https://www.profootballfocus.com/pro-top-10-nfl-rookies-entering-week-8/

And Decker keeps getting rated near the top of the Lions offense as a rookie and is playing extremely well. As good as those guys are, I also can't help but think Jalin should still be here as well...him and Brown would be a great one, two on the outsides. But hey, we were in this same spot after the VTech loss when a ton of guys went pro. Key is gotta keep improving from here on out. Only difference is we are midseason and have less time to pick up the pieces, with a considerably tougher schedule.
