2016 tOSU Offense Discussion

Gotta expect some growing pains after you lose the NFL's best rookie RB and best rookie WR...

Gotta expect some growing pains when outside of your QB, C and LG the entire offense is starting for the first or getting significant snaps... It was predicted by many at the start of the season 2-3 losses, they've played the first half of the season out of their minds, but we all had to expect this team to show their youth eventually. Especially away from home in some of the most intimidating stadiums in CFB

ONE OF URBAN MEYER'S BIGGEST CHALLENGES? STRIKING A BALANCE WITH OHIO STATE'S THREE-HEADED RUSHING ATTACK

When it comes to identifying explosive playmakers, few would argue who qualifies as Ohio State’s No. 1 option.

Curtis Samuel is the Buckeyes’ most dynamic player.

But there has been plenty of discussion the last few weeks about Samuel’s involvement in the Ohio State offense. That’s because sometimes it has been, well, a lack of involvement.

“Early in the game, I understood we played a bunch of plays before he got it. That shouldn’t happen,” Meyer said Monday. “But they were also forcing us to get out of some plays with some of the things they were doing.”

Meyer, of course, was referencing Samuel’s lack of touches in Saturday’s 24-21 loss to Penn State. The junior running back/wide receiver got his hands on the football just 10 times — eight catches, two carries — and his first touch did not come until early in the second quarter.

For a player that ranks 11th in the country in yards from scrimmage at 142.6 per game, that’s simply not enough.

But it’s part of one of the biggest dilemmas for Meyer, co offensive-coordinators Ed Warinner and Tim Beck and the rest of Ohio State’s offensive coaching staff: What’s the proper number of touches for each of the Buckeyes’ three-headed monster in the backfield.

Get back to the hurry-up, give adequate touches to your best players and give the tackles some TE help when they're struggling with edge rushers. It's not that hard to figure out when you watch the film. The competitive advantage they're trying to gain from audibling into the ideal play is being lost because the staff is taking way too much time to get the play in. It's a hell of a lot easier to play defense against a team that is snapping the ball with under 3 seconds on the play clock the majority of the time.

The most frustrating thing is we went through this crap last year. As soon as we jumped back into an urgent, deliberate offense, we crushed TTUN and ND like it was nothing. Stop stubbornly trying to make JT run the offense like Peyton Manning and get back to what has been proven to work best for the offense under this QB.

Serious question here do any of you hold out hope that somehow we will regain form?

Personally I am not. Not trying to be a dick but this is now a two year trend and this feels like the defensive problems from 2013 where Urban was constantly grilled everyweek about the under performing unit but had to wait until the off season to fix it with staffing changes.

I would say we're in a win win scenario. Either it's fixed and tOSU makes the playoffs or its not and Urbans hand will all but be forced to make the change. The schiano impact isn't helping the oc situation. Whether it was primarily schiano or not, he came in and the d got significantly better over the off season. Fan expectations in Columbus are sky high which is a double edged sword for the program.

A lot of talk last year after the Sparty loss centered around the huge improvement against TTUN and the Domers being due to coach Ed getting into the box.

I'm wondering if it wasn't simply superior athletes in those games rising up - Zeke, Bosa, etc. etc.

The reason I mention that is because I feel a lack of creativity from the staff offensively is a huge liability. We are WAY too predictable. And the history of that is concerning. With a very young team it seems to me the opportunity to level the playing field against the elite teams remaining on the schedule - particularly with potential post season games, will come from an up tempo, creative offense that keeps the D on their heels and allows our speed to shine. I'm not convinced yet that the staff can step outside their tendencies to make this happen.

Edit: Wanted to be sure I included the lack of WR consistency too. That certainly limits what an OC can do.

I think this is probably a glaring weakness that hasn't been talked about and probably why Warriner has been so hesitant to air it out. How many flat out drops by the WRs did we have last Saturday that would have extended drives? I remember a lot of them, especially in the first half.

right now the number that screams loudest to me is the point total of all of our opening drives....7 games so 7 opening drives have equalled.......3 points.....3 fucking points
Unlike a lot of the issues which may persist, Urban was pretty candid with the media about needing to address the woeful results of the scripted plays. I'm hopeful that changes will happen there.

History says tOSU will. Always has. This is where leadership steps up. The OL has two good wins in Elflein and Price. At the end though, the will, talent and pride of the players will take over. Price 'lost' a number of rushers, probably because he was trying to pick up for Prince's miscues. Buckeye Nation is spoiled because we expect (!) our players who start to be all-americans in performance immediately as they step into their positions. Certainly the print media touts them to be (if anyone else reads the preseason mags like I do). The kids will learn, and their performance will improve or they will get passed by the 'the next great one' coming up behind them. Cannot underestimate the pride these young people feel toward their performance and their buddies in the trench beside them. Whether they will be able to overcome the DLs still to play or not, well, we'll see. The other teams players are on schollie as well, and trying to do their thing. Final thought, we know that tOSU has a great DL, so how come the OL is having trouble with other team's DLs? Do they not go against the 1's, or 'just' the 2s in practice on a full-go basis? Nevertheless, GO BUCKS! Win out.

Exactly. Which to me, is offensive scheme and predictablity. Of course if someone cares to count dropped passes in opening drives I'd be happy to consider that too!

Also, something I just don't get at all. Why not play Mack and Victor more? I know Campbell is important and has obviously earned PT to Urb. And I get that Brown is a stud and that Curtis will catch some balls. But beyond that.......

Why not open it up to everyone at this point?

The WR room has been every bit as much of a liability as the OL room has.

Remember in 2014 when we would go drive the field the first Drive and score basically all the time? Man it'd be sick JT would go 4 for 4 for like 45 yards, zeke would have 25 yards on 3 carries.

To me this shows just how good TH was at game planning and putting together a great sequence of plays.

yeah dropped passes never help and we have had a couple blatant 3rd down drops. ...but fact remains...... 0 for 7 on opening drive TD's....inexcusable
