2016 tOSU S Discussion

Think less, feel more.
11W posted the scholarship breakdown by recruiting class. Had no idea we were so thin at Safety. Cam Burrows, Erick Smith and Malik Hooker are the only people with experience, and we have Damon Arnette as a Redshirt Frosh and Jashon Wint as a true Freshman. Now sure how much contribution we can expect from the last two. Color me worried.

Is Arnette a safety yet? I know Coombs or whoever said he was definitely starting out at cornerback last year but injuries kept him from seeing much practice time early in the fall. I know Eric Glover-Williams was moved to safety when Erick Smith got hurt. I think he could stick and play Vonn Bell's position in the future. Hopefully the Smith/Hooker/Burrows stay injury free and we don't need to crack into the young inexperience guys at DB to see playing time before they're ready.

Coach Coombs kind of broke it down in his interview about how the safeties in the Ohio State system are basically corners playing on a different spot on the field. I think we'll see a lot of guys we call corners in those safety spots. He specifically called Vonn Bell a corner and says he could play corner in the NFL so I can see why they like those tall, long corners when they might add a little weight and be in a safeties location on the field.

Well to a degree but you still have to be able to tackle and hit like a safety even if you're for all intents and purposes a glorified slot corner. Especially in the B1G. Bell was pretty well rounded. His range was so impressive .

Arnette was healthy enough to take part in Bowl practices.

Birm said Burrows/Smith are progressing nicely from their injuries...pessimistic side of me keeps thinking of Pitt Brown, CJ Barnett and Anderson Russell.

I think Fuller starts by the end of the year.

Coaches seem pretty high on Hooker. Burrows has the experience that is a huge plus with a fairly young secondary. But can he stay healthy? Being so thin at the position I was surprised to hear that Fuller will start out as a CB.

Thats why getting Fuller was big and I believe also Burns who both will end up at Safeties as Wint is a project but is also a S

In the last 2 years I've seen our corners hit like safeties our linebackers run like safeties and tackle like ends, I've seen our tackles run like ends and our ends drop into coverage and ball hawk like corners. Our defense at all positions is coached to play fast, hit hard and adapt. Color me not worried.

This. AND they've finally been taught how to tackle and are doing what they've been taught. I'm much less worried about our safeties than I used to be. We used to have decent athletes trying to make kill-shot tackles and missing and who didn't have the ability to really cover in the open field. Now, we've got high-level athletes who can cover and tackle. As Urban says, the future is bright at Ohio State.

So much changed since those teams where Shazier had to play on one good leg and Roby was the only consistent DB. It would have been even worse if Boren hadn't switched positions.

Man it was brutal watching some of the secondary when Urban first got here. I almost prayed teams wouldn't throw deep because guys would miss their highlight reel hit and the WR would gain massive yards, or they'd get lost in coverage. That's definitely been shored up in the past few years.

I love Burrows and Smith, think they could be dominant. But both have had injury issues and the depth is my biggest concern. If Burrows, Smith, and Hooker stay healthy, we are set. Plus I think Fuller could be an instant impact and play right away. Just have to keep our fingers crossed on health here.
